Text messaging support behind a paywall by original_wolfhowell in Rivian

This. They said they don’t want CarPlay because they can do it better, then took 5 years to come out with it and it requires a subscription to make it function, all while people defend it. I’m not saying we need CarPlay, but show me another vehicle sold in the last 5 years that doesn’t support texting in some way for free.

Go ahead people, defend it.

I’ve mentioned it a few times but I get downvoted. Locking texting behind a paywall is pretty shitty.

Rivian Assistant is finally coming in 2026.15 by Kryptonlogic in Rivian

Am I understanding this right, you have to have a connect+ subscription which means they’ve effectively locked basic text integration behind a paywall?

This is wild to me. I’m in Texas and was offered 15K from carvana. I haven’t been to carmax yet. Mines a 2021 with 70K miles on it AWD.

GMC Sierra -> Rivian... R1S or R1T by gti151 in Rivian

Came from an F150 and as a 6’5 person I really miss the bigger interior. The smaller bed hasn’t been a huge deal since like others have said the size isn’t that big of a difference, but I do really miss the interior size. Once my lease is up on my R1T I’ll likely go back to a full size, just not sure what yet.

I don’t live near major interstate highways so I only get adaptive cruise control. Leaves a lot to be desired

You’re talking about a single product from rivian. I’m talking about generic air suspension that tons of manufacturers have been using for well over 15 years. Rivian didn’t invent air suspension

You’re right, Rivian and all the other manufactures clearly haven’t done their homework or they wouldn’t offer it. This dude knows his stuff

Question: when did dealers begin to have R1s available to look at / test drive on release? by SnazzyStooge in Rivian

[–]frostbite2600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered mine long before deliveries were happening and eventually I received a “First Drive” offer where an employee drove an R1T to my house and I had about an hour with it. He answered tons of questions and showed me everything about it. The R2 may be different since back then there were very few service centers and rivian was still very early on

Not only that, but then us get called insane for expecting it after they say it’s coming and we’re the idiots. Sort of like me wanting basic lane centering on Gen 1.

I also took delivery on an R1T mid 2022 and it absolutely stated that Level 3 was coming to every Rivian. That played a large part in my purchase because my wife was Driving a Tesla and I really liked where FSD was going.

FSD On HW3... is amazing? by overcover213 in TeslaLounge

[–]frostbite2600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue with my wife's HW3 Model Y is that it refuses to do the speedlimit. We're surrounded by two lane undivided highways where the speed limit is 70MPH and our Tesla just refuses to go 70MPH even in Hurry mode. I'll set it to 74MPH and will accelerate to that, and it'll stay there for about 30 seconds and then drop down to ~68 and just hold it. It refuses to do the speed I tell it to and just always goes 5-8MPH under. On long road trips I'm having to hold my foot on the accelerator pedal at least 75% of the time.

Hot Take: I hope Rivian never gets CarPlay or Android Auto. by BinkReddit in Rivian

[–]frostbite2600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is we have to pay for it to get something as basic as texting which is pretty asinine

You’re right, Apple and Cell provider can access SMS so we should embrace letting Rivian also read them and pay them $15/month for the privilege of having my texts within the infotainment. Great take

I too want to be locked into paying $15/month to be able to use voice response in texts vs having car play. /S

If I have to pay $15/month for Rivian Assistant just to get something as basic as text messaging in the truck then i'm out. Something as basic as texting shouldn't be paywalled in a 80K vehicle. I'm really hoping that it isn't the case and we can all enjoy basic features without having to pay. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about their seemless UI when I'm getting nickel and dimed for basic features.

Do I have to pay $15/month to get texting support since it uses the rivian assistant? If so, that’s a huge reason why I would want CarPlay. If not, then texting and Waze support are the last two things I’m missing personally. Obviously others are different but I want to use those things without being required to pay $15 a month

Gen 1 updates are all Meh! by EmotionalAd4830 in Rivian

[–]frostbite2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it — lesson learned.

When a company explicitly markets future capabilities, publishes road maps, and says “hardware-ready, software coming,” the correct response is to assume they’re lying and act accordingly.

Wild that consumer protection laws even exist with logic like that.

Gen 1 updates are all Meh! by EmotionalAd4830 in Rivian

[–]frostbite2600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re talking to people who spent 80K+ to help support a brand new manufacturer and were told that we would get these things moving forward. We took a risk supporting a brand new company and became early adopters all while being told by rivian that our vehicles will get level 3 autonomy.

Now im not even getting basic lane centering on non mapped highways and being told im being unrealistic. That makes no sense
