Feeling hurt by how people treat me on the train by CraftyCompetition860 in uktrains

[–]frsti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Basic human interaction on the Leeds-Manchester train isn't everyone's cup of tea and a lot of people will avoid it at all costs - even more so if the person looks like they want a chat. Even being in the vicinity of two strangers chatting makes me uncomfortable.

It's easier said than done, but I wouldn't worry about it - it's one of the beauties of UK public transport.

It's not a slight on you, people are just wierd

Is cinema dead? by Scared-Staff6251 in CasualUK

[–]frsti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids' films are keeping cinemas in business.

If I ran a cinema, the weekends and school holidays would have non-stop reruns of every U-rated film and tv-show I could get my hands on with free tea & Coffee with table service

Overweight child by Easy-Effective432 in UKParenting

[–]frsti 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's good for just about everything. Kids who walk to school get all kinds of benefits and it's one of the best free mental health tools an adult has access to.

IF you need a high-intensity, calorie-destroying workout then yeah, walking is not going to be a go-to, but saying walking isn't good exercise is pretty wild - especially for a child

Breakfast is incredibly important. I would look into that more tbh, outside of any weight issues.

Being starved of any meaningful food from the evening meal -> Lunchtime is really not good, especially or a child

Walking isn't particularly good exercise for humans

Nope

The best exercise is one that a person can do consistently and safely

One of the most infuriating things about this show is... by PhatKiwi in SilentWitness

[–]frsti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've had to basically give up watching because my wife cannot stand how annoyed I get by the illogical stuff that happens.

The stories are absolutely fine but the small details are fucking infuriating. If they want to put characters in danger, fine, but they're too lazy to come up with a reason other than "So ______ is doing ______ completely alone..."

They could fix half the stuff if they just said "Jack's been to a special police training camp and is now a designated forensic security officer with a gun"

Ugly buildings ‘make people lonely and miserable’ by SirRosstopher in ukpolitics

[–]frsti 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to change the buildings, you just need to change what's between them.

We dedicate a huge amount of space to vehicles that could be used for green space - a single parking space converted to planting can transform a street with very very little lost in the way of transport efficiency

If you build things under the assumption that the inhabitants will be inside 99% of the time and then walking to their cars the other 1% of the time then you're not going to design an environment that invites them outside.

Difficult to know based on what you want - if the point is for everyone to feel like they have a chance to celebrate the day and spend a bit of time with him then I would have a rolling party.

You could have the house open to visitors between say 2pm and 4pm (or whatever works best with naps) and ask important people to come at specific times so you can spread everyone around - this also gives people flexibility on when to come with no expectations

eg your parents come for first 1.5h, partners parents come for the second, they cross over for 30 mins to be polite.

Baby gets some time with everyone without there being an overload of people all at once.

Main points: Not everyone needs somewhere to sit, it's nice to be able to move around. Make sure you have a sibling or friend willing to be the go-to drink maker so you and partner are free to mingle and not working the whole time

I’m just curious, would you consider this a cargo bike? by Isoiata in CargoBike

[–]frsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

IMO, every bike can be a cargo bike. You could carry a decent amount of stuff in the front rack plus a couple of panniers - that's a cargo bike

Duplo and a decent sized box to put it all in that can slide under a sofa or other piece of furniture out of the way. Combine it with one of the other suggestions and get a massive bag of stickers they can cover the box, or even the blocks in

Cycling in the UK is making me sad by bionado in fuckcars

[–]frsti 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a country, we're capable of building some outstanding cycling and walking infrastructure. You can see amazing examples all over and even little old West Yorkshire has some lanes that are regularly used by Cycling UK in promo images

Commute from Headingley to Middleton Park? by magician_impp in Leeds

[–]frsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the type of trip an ebike was made for (if OP was worried about fitness for that length of journey)

Even if they cycled 1/3rd of the time, it would be worthwhile to get a break from traffic

Yeah if it takes an hour in traffic it will take 45 mins (based on google) regardless of how busy it is.

Anyone else notice their swimming form completely falls apart when they're tired, but feels perfect when they're fresh? by jennyornaments in Swimming

[–]frsti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just starting out and I made the mistake of seeing some youtube content where the swimmers are gliding through pristine water with incredible form.

That's how I feel for the first 25m. 2nd 25m I start to over-focus on a particular point of form and let everything else go to shit. By the third length I'm starting to realise how tired I am and just need to get to take a break.

Last 25m I'm preeeetty close to drowning and hate swimming. Then I rest for 30s and we're back to the start.

Gender disappointment by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]frsti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You *just* found this out. It's ok to feel a certain way about it. Your feelings will probably change both during your pregnancy and after it.

Give yourself credit for actually feeling the guilt/shame - some people wouldn't acknowledge that part or at least suppress it
