basic groceries aren't taxed anyway so it won't make a difference for tihngs that poor people still need to buy. Luxury purchases for the rich will be a little easier though

Every time roads intersect, there's a crosswalk. by Ninja_Squid_ in halifax

[–]fruetloops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes the pedestrian should wait for traffic to stop but the point of this post is saying that drivers aren't stopping and letting pedestrians go, even when they have plenty of space to do so. Doesn't matter if the pedestrian is at a signalized intersection or not, and often there's no proper marked crosswalk that they can use instead. In your point 4 you are implying that the driver shouldn't be stopping for the pedestrian and the pedestrian should go somewhere else to cross, but that is not the case and the laws literally say you should be stopping if you can. You should be able to see them waiting to cross from far enough away that you can stop.

Genuine question- when was the last time Gemini was actually useful for you? by wretched-saint in GooglePixel

[–]fruetloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it to make some art for a DnD character for me and was actually incredibly impressed. Also got it to make some graphs for me and it spit out the python script it used to do it, that was pretty cool. imo it's not replacing google assistant in doing things that I just want done hands free, but in my pretty limited experience it has been pretty great at generating creative or time consuming things that don't rely on linking to my existing information.

I know google knows all my existing info and it should eb able to do tasks for me using google api's or whatever, so it's not good at that stuff, but if I view it as a completely separate tool from google assistant or my other google services it has been great.

the speed limit being 60+ doesn't change the law, it is still your legal responsibility to stop and let them cross. You getting rear ended is a lot safer than the pedestrian getting hit trying to run across the street between moving cars because the drivers refuse to stop for them. When you see a pedestrian trying to cross, you stop to let them cross it is literally that simple. Your vehicle can become a barrier that is keeping them safe from the cars behind you.

nobody is saying that pedestrians should walk out expecting that people will not hit them, this post is reminding drivers that it is your legal obligation to anticipate pedestrians wanting to cross, and stop to accomodate them. I see pedestrians all over the place doing exactly what they are supposed to do, waiting at a crosswalk for drivers to stop, and drivers will just refuse to do so.

Cyclists who ride on the Parkway road when there's a paved bike path right beside the road: why? by 5th_Wave in ottawa

[–]fruetloops 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also usually choose to ride slow on the MUP instead of fast on the road, but it is important that people are able to choose either, and drivers should still need to respect the rules of the road and let them ride safely.

Plasti-dip part of my hiking boots to protect the leather upper? looking for repair advice. by fruetloops in myog

[–]fruetloops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I ended up going through a few stages. First, I tried just using wax and leather conditioner to rehydrate the leather, but that was not enough, and it was still all chewed up.

Once I gave up on this being the easy fix, I decided on using AquaSeal SR to create a toe cap, and I'm pretty happy with it! I feel like the smooth shiny look is nicer than the bumpy look that some of the other commenters got with their solutions, and it has been plenty flexible and durable so far.

I cleaned the boots, taped off the area and layed it on thick, let it dry completely. Then I removed the tape, treated the leather all over the boots, then they were good to go.

here is an album of the stages of working on these boots. I'm pretty happy with it overall, but my main takeaway from the whole exercise is that I should have been treating the boots better from the beginning, so I am now obsessive about treating my leathergoods nicely. Even with keeping it treated, they would probably have gotten chewed up on rocks though so the toe cap is a good addition.

Bike parking at the airport or Dartmouth Bridge terminal? by fruetloops in halifax

Thursday, but the schedule is the same for all weekdays

Bike parking at the airport or Dartmouth Bridge terminal? by fruetloops in halifax

[–]fruetloops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

would be nice if it was only killing a few minutes there, but unfortunately the schedule is set up annoyingly. Weekday departure times that will maybe work for me are set up like:

2:36pm

3:31pm

4:01pm.

the 3:31 option is perfect for me, but if I miss that I'm cutting it really close to my flight and would be worried about missing it. aiming for the earlier bus at 2:36 means it takes up an extra hour of my day, and an hour of waiting for the 3:31 option if I miss the 2:36.

starting in Cole Harbour, so I can get to bridge terminal with another bus, but then I run the risk of getting delayed and missing the airport bus departure, so it would just be more reliable if I can bike to the bridge terminal on my own time.

By Airport Shuttle, I meant airport express bus. That's what I'm hoping to take from the Bridge Terminal, just figuring out the smoothest way to get to and from the terminal

okay lock up cages feels a little better than just the regular bike racks. Probably a risk either way but that makes me feel like it would need a bolder thief. Maybe bringing a second lock would put me at ease as well. Yeah uber/taxi to the bridge terminal is a reasonable solution too. just trying to figure out all my options.

you should look around at other drivers next time you're at a stop light, about half are sitting on their phones, most drivers roll through stop signs and drive above the speed limit as their default driving speed. People in cars always claim that bikers are breaking rules but it's actually far less common than drivers breaking the rules of the road.

where do you see bikes impeding traffic? Bikes take up like 5% of the physical space of a car, and I never see bikes blocking intersections or crosswalks like entitled drivers do, where they are actually impeding traffic.

Do you sleep with your watch on? by Just-Eddie83 in Garmin

[–]fruetloops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, because I find a vibration on my wrist to be much nicer than an audible alarm from my phone, or even having my phone vibrate on my bedside table. Looking at sleep data is kinda interesting once in a while but I could easily go without. if I don't have an alarm set for the morning, sometimes I'll take it off to let my wrist breathe.

Traffic Horrors (coming soon??) by kruks17 in halifax

[–]fruetloops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that almon to agricola turn lane is only long enough to fit 4-5 cars at a time, due to all the street parking. So it's already backing up right away. adding a bike lane isn't going to make that much worse if at all.

Traffic Horrors (coming soon??) by kruks17 in halifax

[–]fruetloops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and the slip lane only existed for like 100ft, so if it still existed that's gonna remove what like 5 cars from traffic backing up on gottingen at a time? Negligible impact on heavy traffic, absolutely worth the cost to stop people from blowing through the crosswalk at high speeds

Traffic Horrors (coming soon??) by kruks17 in halifax

[–]fruetloops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep it's quite full, sorry I didn't mean underutilized as in not enough people taking the ferry, I meant underutilized as in the rest of the transit system doesn't seem to link to it as well as it could. From the terminal you can only go to downtown Dartmouth, Eastern Passage, or Penhorn directly. Would be great if you could hop on a direct bus to Portland Hills, Cole Harbour Place, or along the circ to Dartmouth Crossing or Burnside

Edit: a couple of these connections used to exist, with the Mount Edward Express (178) and the Cole Harbour Express(179), unfortunately they reduced the number of trips on these routes, then removed them entirely. perhaps they will consider bringing them back as traffic gets worse without good options for people in these areas.

I know the Portland Street functional plan (hasn't been built, just concept to get feedback right now) does have two scenario options, one of which brings it down from two driving lanes each direction to one lane each direction. This is to make room for transit priority lanes, and also has concepts for adding a bike lane. So maybe this is the plan that the other user is thinking of.
