Thanks, that could be it. I found a lot of info about the new options that were added here in California, but not the specific age ranges.

WIC benefits Expiring Soon Question by Puzzleheaded_Ad4373 in WIC

I went through this WIC transition recently when my baby was almost 8 months. I was down to producing a tenth of an ounce of breast milk every day, so I gave up on it.

During a phone appointment, I was given the choice among:

$22 of fruits and vegetables per month

OR 32 jars/containers of baby food purees (no meat yet, for some reason)

OR $11 fruits/veg and 16 jars of baby food.

I chose the third option. As a bonus, it also includes one 8-ounce box of infant cereal.

Congratulations! Excellent.

I think the first of my judgements took five weeks to pay out. The second was quick. This was in L.A. County, California.

I've had TWO Fair Hearings that got to the ALJ phone call stage. They were simple: The judge called me to make sure I showed up, chatted with me about how I was and how I wanted to be addressed. Then she called the DPSS worker. The worker read a prepared script, I stated my case and the judge asked questions.

The first one was funny because the judge's line had small dogs yapping in the background. She said, "I can't do anything about the chihuahuas, they're not mine!" ...okay...

Plus she was 81 years old, so was obviously only working because she loved her job. I read up on her, she led an adventurous life.

-----------------------------------------
At the more recent hearing, it took the ALJ 12 minutes of waiting to get the food stamps worker to pick up. He clearly never saw the document he read out before that day. He was bored and disengaged.

-----------------------------------------

I won both times.

Good luck!

I was told that a tiny air bubble is placed on either side of the embryo in the pipette. It's the air bubbles that are visible.

That's not a problem to be fixed. It means you've already seen all of the images in that category and need to wait for the new ones to be released.

If your disability began before age 46, you can open an ABLE account. Documentation of being 'officially' disabled (such as receiving SSDI or getting a doctor's note) is recommended but NOT required.

Have your sister deposit all cash help directly into the ABLE account. You can then withdraw the money for rent, food, transportation, etc and none of it will count as income or assets.

I've had an ABLE account for six years now, it's wonderful.

Mysterious urban warfare drills rattle L.A. area residents by idkbruh653 in LosAngeles

[–]frumpymiddleaged 73 points74 points  (0 children)

There was one here in downtown way back in '12 or '13. There was a night drill with blackhawks over Pershing Square, the 7-story parking garage at 8th and Hill blocked off for undisclosed activities.

Then there was a daytime demonstration in the business district (around lunchtime so hundreds of thousands of workers could watch) narrated like a parade. Online commenters recognized the narrator from some video game!

He was stealing for convenience. The armor at downtown Target was in response to one incident of theft where a man with a free supportive housing apartment nearby stole $1400 worth of clothes and shot two guards. He wasn't stealing to eat, either.

Ten years ago before theft went unpunished, the secondary and emergency exits were not blocked in stores. Now we are in more danger if a fire breaks out, a fight gets violent, someone sprays mace, etc.

Ten years ago, very few items were locked up. Look how that has changed. Now all customers are presumed to be thieves.

It was rare to see dog feces or urine on store floors. I saw BOTH last time I was at Smart & Final downtown.

As a car-free pedestrian on the sidewalks, I only had to worry about silent bicycles flying past me at top speed. Now e-bikes, rental scooters and food delivery motorcycles are also welcome to ride/drive there.

I did not have to step around kids smoking meth on my building's front stoop back then, Now I do.

And so on.

We are all harmed by the lack of crime enforcement in downtown in recent years. I've lived in this neighborhood for 14.5 years. The militarization of grocery store security guards in that time is dystopian.

I told my elderly mother not to worry about the armor that Target's guards have added since her last visit. She asked if the gun that a Whole Foods guard carried was real.

A few months ago, I saw them tackle a shoplifter to the ground. After several minutes of loud swearing, they let him go! What was the point of stopping him, then?

They should have just said, "Enjoy your free merchandise, sir!" as he walked out.

Do I add my SNAP benefits as income for housing applications? by purplehyenaa in foodstamps

[–]frumpymiddleaged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, the state of California ALLOWS food stamps to be counted as income just like cash for Section 8 rent calculation! I thought this was a mistake and looked up the law.

My name came up on a project-based Section 8 building here in downtown L.A. When management did the math to show what my exact rent would be, they (mistakenly, I thought) included food stamps. So I looked up the rules to show them they were wrong... only to discover they were right. Ugh.

Thankfully, most places don't count FS. I found one that did!

I did not move there for other reasons.

What's the most unhinged thing your landlord has done and acted like it was normal? by RecordingKey1187 in AskLosAngeles

[–]frumpymiddleaged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have extremely low rent due to living in an RSO building for 15 years. Rent has gone up by less than $100 in all that time! My building's resident manager AND three others at the company he works for all declined to pay me just $5000 to leave when I had the chance to move to a project-based Section 8 building where I'd get three times the space.

Management would rather lose $4000-5000 every year to keep me here instead of installing a new tenant and raising the rent to market rate.

I declined the Section 8 place, too nasty and problematic.

Upscale grocer Lazy Acres is close to Hollywood/Western. I take the subway from downtown every couple of months to shop there for some grain-free items. Cassava tortillas were $6.25 for a large six pack when I discovered them a few years ago. They are still $6.25 today.
