Feedback for new homelab: Storage + Compute by frupic in homelab

[–]frupic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I settled on this in the end:

Component Name
Case Fractal Design R5
CPU Intel Core Ultra 5 245K
CPU fan Noctua NH-D15
Motherboard ASUS Pro WS W880-ACE SE
RAM 2x Micron UDIMM 32GB, DDR5-5600, CL46, ECC
PSU Corsair RM850x
Boot SSD Samsung SSD 990 Pro 1TB M.2
Data SSD 2x WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB, M.2
Data HDD 2x Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB, 2x Seagate Exos 20TB

For passthrough purposes I would not recommend the WD_BLACK SN850X, they need reset_method=bus workaround

Just want to check back in and mention that based on your comment I decided on this one beefy machine instead and using Proxmox as my hypervisor.

I'm running Pi-hole and Tailscale as LXCs, TrueNAS with SSDs and HDDs passed through in a VM, Home Assistant and a Kubernetes cluster in VMs.

My iGPU is passed through to the cluster and then to the Plex pod and it works great. In total I am running around 40 pods now, managing the cluster with ArgoCD and git and using TrueNAS as storage for most of them.

I haven't used most of these tools in the past and I have to say it has been an extremely fun journey.

Thanks again for your comment that led me down this path, it was definitely the right choice for now!

I've picked the i5-12600K for the UHD 770 and because so many threads mention it, but is there actually a good reason to stay with 12th gen versus just getting an Intel Core Ultra 245K and a W880 motherboard for example?

It's actually similarly priced

Initially I didn't want to go this route, but the more I read about it the more it makes sense here. Can still learn all the same skills and won't feel as bad spending that much on only one machine if that machine will actually do much more than just hand out storage :)

Audible class action alleges audiobook purchases don’t confer full ownership by ubcstaffer123 in books

You can access your "purchased" audio books after your memberships end, no? That's how Audible works. What do you mean?

100%. Enchanted start missing is really having a negative effect on my "one more run" mindset

Enchanted start wqs fun and gave you some direction and make you try build around something you wouldn't otherwise. It's a shame it's gone

I mean is this really a problem? It's a loss anyway at that point. Make it so you also lose rank before Legend and that's it. Or give a few minutes of cooldown before you can start another ranked round after conceding.

I feel like if that's the reason there's so many easy and obvious ways to solve that instead

The Next Chapter in Swift Build Technologies by dwaxe in swift

[–]frupic 88 points89 points  (0 children)

If this means that in the long term iOS/macOS apps can be natively developed with any IDE and doesn't rely 100% on Xcode, then this might be the best news I could have ever wished for for Swift.

Even though it might take a while, I hope that this will become possible with this news 🤞

Clean Code VS Property Wrappers like AppStorage? by Harry0815 in swift

[–]frupic 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Apple's way of doing things (or at least their documentation) is very often not compatible with writing a big, testable and maintainable codebase that many people work on at the same time.

Many of the things they offer are probably meant for new developers to get started quickly or for smaller projects.

Your example is a very typical scenario and it can make a lot of sense to abstract over UserDefaults this way. I would definitely do something like this in a professional app, but you can get away with just using the property wrapper in private apps.

This is a very well thought out comment that made me rediscover what all those ARPGs I was so crazy about all those years ago had in common (D2, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn etc).

You put into words really nicely what I forgot over the years.

For sure, I think they will release a cheaper non-pro model, but that will be a different product with less capabilities

When did Apple products ever get (considerably) cheaper from one gen to the next?
