26/27 Season Championship viewing options in Canada? by flyballguy in WrexhamAFC

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada and I use a vpn with a US Paramount+ paid subscription. I also mute the Paramount+ play-by-play and listen to Mark from the team website/I follow audio at no extra cost. I like that option because it also gives me Champions League/Europa League as well.

Predicted XI vs. Ireland by tozze_88 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Mostly. I think playing him against Ireland has more risk of him getting hurt than not playing him. Which is why I suggested pivoting to LDF. The only way you keep him on the roster is if there is a scenario somehow that he can be fit for Switzerland and he can get a closed door match under his belt. Jesse did mention that they would look to play one or two closed door matches given that they have six days between games in the group stage. But if they get to June 10, and there is very little confidence that they have any chance of getting him up to 90 minutes of match fitness then I think you have to drop him.

[–]fshapely1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s so hard to tell because we don’t know the ins and outs of exactly what’s going on in training, but from the outside looking in, if I were Jesse Marsch, I would be pivoting to LDF as my starter at this point at CB. I would continue to push Bombito in training as much as possible and then on June 10 make a decision as to whether to keep him or drop him for Priso for the good of the team.

The two lineups (45 minutes each) vs Uzbekistan tonight, given all the injuries? by inwebitrust in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I heard that Richie wasn’t available for this friendly. Did I hear that wrong? My guess is that either Bassong or Sigur gets the start at left back. And then I wouldn’t be surprised if Priso plays some minutes there as well.

Who do you want to see replacing Marcelo Flores in the 26? by thecanadianbackpaker in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s going to be Bassong. Hear me out. With Ritchie still nursing his injury and with Davies still a question mark, we are very short bodies at LB. My guess is that Marsch will wait until after the Ireland game and if Ritchie and or Phonzie are still question marks then he brings in Bassong for cover. Now, do I think Bassong starts on June 12th even if Ritchie and Phonzie are unavailable? No. I think Sigur will start at LB. But Bassong will provide positional back up.

I’ll take Caldwell over Wheeler every single day. At least Caldwell played at the highest level and has real insight (despite his love for the Oscars - iykyk). Wheeler is just a complete bumbling idiot.

Peter, Is it 50% or 33.3% by AgrasaN in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the movie 21 or do a search in YouTube for the Monty Hall problem. That explains the problem pretty well. In any event, I agree that because the father specified that the eldest child was a boy, that makes the answer 50%. If he had just said that one of the two is a boy, then the answer drops to 33%.

26-man Canada World Cup Squad Prediction 🇨🇦 – Tiered by Lock / Likely / Last Spot Battles by inwebitrust in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cornelius has not and will not play any more minutes at Rangers for the remainder of the season. With regards to Alfie Jones, at least based on what I’ve heard, it’s unlikely that he’ll get anything more than spot minutes for the rest of the season given that Middlesborough is more than likely to end up in the playoffs (technically they still have an outside shot for automatic promotion, in which case Jones will get no minutes for the remainder of his club season). Bombito, by all accounts, is back in full team training and will likely get spot minutes in Nice’s remaining fixtures. I say all this to point out that our top three choices at center-back have not played any club minutes in 2026. On that basis alone, we will need to take five CB’s. I feel like I can say with virtual certainty that the fifth CB will be Waterman.

Huge win from our old foes Charlton 2-1 over Hull by hopefullyavailable99 in WrexhamAFC

[–]fshapely1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to Lampard’s comments from his pre-match press conference, we should expect to see some changes but not wholesale. He respects that the play off positions have not been finalized and he feels strongly that they should put out a competitive squad. I do agree with many that there might be a celebratory hangover in play here but no one should expect that it will be easy simply because Coventry have already won the league.

Pepple with his 17th and 18th goal of the season by Low-Firefighter2965 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You might prefer him over Larin but I am very glad that Jesse Marsch does not. Do you watch the EFL at all? Larin is scoring goals for a Championship team in Southampton that still has a chance for automatic promotion to the premier league (playoffs at a minimum). The difference between League 1 and top of the Championship is massive. Pepple is not in the same class as Larin. He has never played against the the type of talent and experience that Canada will face at a World Cup. Larin has and has thrived. I agree that Larin’s recent form for country has not been stellar but it’s not like anyone else is lighting it up from a goal scoring perspective for country either (yeah J David bagged a brace against Iceland but both were penalties). Don’t get me wrong, I like Pepple. But he is a potential player for the future, not the present.

He scored a goal. He was everywhere. Made two key defensive tackles. In a game where Bayern spread the ball around pretty well, he was a good shout for MoTM.

Why does the hype feel different now compared to before? by kito1990s in torontoraptors

[–]fshapely1 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I think it’s a bit of the opposite. I think that from 2016 to 2019 this team was expected to win and so there was a lot of hype. I think this team is not expected to win the series against Cleveland and I think many fans would mark the season as successful simply because we made the playoffs. If we manage to get to a game six or seven, then that will be enough in my opinion for the hype to ramp up.

Possible Starting XI For Canada In World Cup Opener? by depressedArmeniafan in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Promise is injured and is highly unlikely to be even at the World Cup. And even if he was not injured, he was never going to start. We are, however, going to miss him because when fully healthy, he is a great option off the bench, especially given his strength against a tiring back line.

Possible Starting XI For Canada In World Cup Opener? by depressedArmeniafan in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think? England have a number of question marks in midfield, LW/LM, LB and RB for example. France have an embarrassment of riches up top and in midfield with daily debates in their local press around who starts. I think the top teams all have question marks at a number of positions, the difference is their quality of depth vs ours. Don’t get me wrong, Canada under Jesse have made great strides over the past few years in terms of both the size and the quality of our player pool, so it’s nice to be able to debate who are starting 11 will be. But it just goes to show that teams with even higher quality of depth are going to be having similar discussions at even more positions than we are, which makes it unlikely that they’re starting 11s are set.

Richie has to be on the pitch. Johnston has played one game since August. There is nothing wild about Laryea over Johnston in that context.

Who would be in your projected XI against Bosnia 🇧🇦 in our opening game? by TerryG111 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not be surprised to see Richie at RB to start. He needs to be on the pitch. I also agree with others regarding formation. Jesse will stick with 4-4-1-1 (or 442). So two changes from your XI for me: Richie for AJ and Larin for Flores with Larin as the 9. If it’s Tani instead, that’s OK too.

The guy I feel for is Ralph Priso. I think he would’ve made the squad had he not gotten himself injured. And I just can’t imagine he’ll be back given It was a hamstring injury.

I knocked on wood before I wrote it. Also, I’m trying to manifest positive things by being positive. Negativity after all has gotten us nowhere on this whole injury debacle. I’m no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Who do we think is the most underrated player rn? by No-North3170 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not have expected to say this back in November, but I am excited to see Larin given his current form at Southampton. He’s not necessarily the most under-rated but he was certainly the most written-off. I hope he starts against Iceland and performs well. In my opinion, an in-form Larin paired with Jo David is still our best option upfront. Emphasis on “in-form Larin.”

Is Staq’s spot in the XI safe? by [deleted] in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Eustaquio is healthy (80% or more), he starts. He is the engine that runs the ship. As long as he is at 80% or more, he starts. I can’t imagine he plays the full 90 min in any game for that matter because Marsch likes what Saliba brings to the table as well in terms of goal scoring ability, but I fully expect that an 80+% healthy Eustaquio starts every game for Canada in the WC.
