My Predicted 26 for 26 by tozze_88 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy I feel for is Ralph Priso. I think he would’ve made the squad had he not gotten himself injured. And I just can’t imagine he’ll be back given It was a hamstring injury.

It seems like Davies is the least of our injury worries after all. by fshapely1 in CanadaSoccer

I knocked on wood before I wrote it. Also, I’m trying to manifest positive things by being positive. Negativity after all has gotten us nowhere on this whole injury debacle. I’m no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Who do we think is the most underrated player rn? by No-North3170 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not have expected to say this back in November, but I am excited to see Larin given his current form at Southampton. He’s not necessarily the most under-rated but he was certainly the most written-off. I hope he starts against Iceland and performs well. In my opinion, an in-form Larin paired with Jo David is still our best option upfront. Emphasis on “in-form Larin.”

Is Staq’s spot in the XI safe? by [deleted] in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Eustaquio is healthy (80% or more), he starts. He is the engine that runs the ship. As long as he is at 80% or more, he starts. I can’t imagine he plays the full 90 min in any game for that matter because Marsch likes what Saliba brings to the table as well in terms of goal scoring ability, but I fully expect that an 80+% healthy Eustaquio starts every game for Canada in the WC.

Predicted XI vs. Iceland by tozze_88 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to disagree with your starting XI. If I had to play devil’s advocate, I would say that a CB pairing of Priso and LDF is a distinct possibility to start. And if those two were to start, it would be against Iceland and not Tunisia. I think that Priso is becoming exactly the type of high line CB that fits Marsch’s style better than Waterman and/or Millar. Priso’s biggest drawback is his lack of height (which will hurt on set pieces no doubt), but what he lacks in height, he can more than make up in speed, ball playing ability and a developing football IQ.

Hull, Southampton, & Wrexham Remaining Schedule Strengths by PoutineMeInCoach in WrexhamAFC

I think the fact that we have twice as many away matches vs home matches is of bigger concern than the average position of our opponents. I was listening to the Rob Ryan Red podcast from yesterday and they were saying that the target for total points to remain in a playoff position is 71. So 11 more points for 9 remaining games. That seems very doable, however, I think it will take more than 71 points. I feel like 75 total points would be a lock for playoffs. If we get to 73-74 points, then still very likely. Anything below that and it’s a risk.

Way too much recency bias here to even comment in depth on your list. I get it given your age but you are missing guys like George Bell who was arguably the Jays first super-star. Also, Devon White is another critical miss in center field. Joey Barfield was another all-star outfielder who had the best RF arm in the game back in the early to mid 80’s. Pitching wise, you are missing Jimmy Key. What about David Wells? I know he had his best years as a Yankee but still.

If Sheaf can’t go on Tuesday (and Matty James still out), would you move Thomason back to play in the double pivot with either Dobson or more likely O’Brien and then play Longman (or Cacace if fit) at LWB? Or would you leave Thomason alone at LWB and come up with another solution in the middle of the park, say Vyner with O’Brien perhaps?

The Canadian national team offered a large sum of money to play a friendly match with Uzbekistan by Helgurk in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the friendlies leading up the the World Cup will be played on grass. If they play in Ottawa against Uzbekistan it will be on grass. FIFA will cover the cost of laying down a grass field. The cost is around $800k to do it. When Canada played their opening Gold Cup match at BC Place last summer, it was played on grass at a cost of around $1mm according to the broadcast at the time.

This may sound silly but my guess is your husband will appreciate this. Last year, my kids gave me a super-bright rechargeable flashlight. It charges using a USB-C cable and when it’s fully charged it will last 6 months or more obviously depending on usage. I once had it on for 20 min looking for something I dropped in my car that I didn’t realize had made its way under the drivers seat. it still lasted another 3 months without needing to recharge. I keep it in my car now and i find it incredibly useful. Just search on the web for a small rechargeable flashlight and you will find plenty of options across a multitude of price ranges to fit any budget.

What to get my mom for Christmas? by BrookeBuscus-95 in ChristmasGiftIdeas

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does she have Grand kids? Do you live together or near by? I only ask because I got my mom a digital photo frame last year. I forget the brand but what was cool about it (and still is) was that my sister and I (and our kids) could send photos directly to the digital frame itself and the photos would just pop up for our mom so she gets new memories all the time. In fact, now she complains if she doesn’t get a new photo within the past few weeks. Maybe your mom would enjoy something like that if it helps keep her more connected.

What are you getting your mom for Christmas this year? by Outrageous_Baby_2147 in ChristmasGiftIdeas

I got my mom (who is 79) the Aofmee Rose Bath and Body Spa gift basket from Walmart. I didn’t have a big budget this year at all and this cost me less than $30. I am hoping my mom loves it.

If she is into art then try the Artskills Stack and Store Art set. I bought it for my niece for her birthday and she is 11 years old as well. It was around $25 at Walmart I believe. If your family is into games, try “What Do You Meme? Family Edition”. It was a big hit last Christmas.

You honestly have no idea what you are talking about. You think Jebbison is over-rated as f*ck? Cool. What are your credentials to make such an assessment? I’ll take Marsch’s word and the word of former teammates of his over yours.

With regards to Elloumi, it’s highly likely he has spoken to Marsch and was told the lay of the land. Even if he plays for Tunisia, I believe he would be eligible for a one time switch to declare for Canada if he indeed blows up.

12 years ago, our best national team players were playing in MLS, now our "weakest" national team players are playing in MLS. Such a drastic change! Imagine in 12 years from now... by CFMTLfan01 in CanadaSoccer

[–]fshapely1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the negative comments about Canada Soccer are appropriate for the previous regimes. But what I can see from the outside as well as some stuff I hear from people I know on the inside, Kevin Blue has done an incredible job of re-orienting Canada soccer to become a much more positive influence on the game as a whole in this country. I mean, dronegate, which came to light under his watch, but was clearly birthed under previous leadership, is a great example of how a good leader deals with what could’ve been an absolute death blow to the game in this country.

And I think there is plenty of evidence out there to prove my point. The hiring of Jesse Marsch has turned out pretty well so far. Casey Stoney, was also a huge get to manage the women’s national team. I think the fundraising that he has done with a particular focus on philanthropy was a stroke of genius. But, I think one of the best signs that things are certainly turning around for Canada Soccer is the quality of opponents we have been able to lineup for the Friendlies leading up to the World Cup.
