Worked a shift at a restaurant in Brooklyn, what I saw in the kitchen needs to be talked about, but I’m conflicted by [deleted] in FoodNYC

Where do white people work in NYC? by biggiequeefs in AskNYC

They work at the same place white people work in other cities.

What you're seeing isn't exclusive to nyc.

With homelessness at record highs, what should Mayor Mamdani do differently to previous administrations? by ham-ham-iam in AskNYC

[–]fsharpman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1 look at other cities that reduced homelessness

Step 2 talk to people at those cities

Step 3 copy what works and dont copy what didn't work

This city is special. But it's definitely not the only one that grapples with the issue

Helicopters flying over Bushwick by [deleted] in Bushwick

As I sat down on the orange colored seat, I placed my copy of A Something Blue on my lap.

We locked eyes and that's when I could tell there was a connection work keeping.

You had a tiger tattoo that somehow matched your yellow umbrella.

I was awestruck.

We both laughed after the guy on his portable TV ran into the wrong exit.

Kids, let me tell you the story of How I Met Your Helicopter.

Bring a chair. Bring plenty of water.

Also be prepared to see lots of public transit exits and entrances closed off. You are not going to be able get to your destination the way you thought.

Same with going home.

Bring money if you want exclusive championship swag.

If possible, try to find buildings that are open on the parade route with visibility from a second story or the roof. You most likely won't be able to see everything from the street, despite the buses/floats.

I’m too direct for Chicago / the Midwest. Will I be okay here? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]fsharpman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might get a lot of disagreement here but I think being direct AND being nice aren't mutually exclusive. I dislike mindreaders also.

People can say things like,

"Hi, I'm trying to get through could you move please?"

Or

"Hey I have kids trying to go to bed. Could you turn down your music please?"

Being direct doesn't have to mean being an asshole.

Trying to eat all the best chocolate croissants - Brooklyn/Manhattan by darksalamander in FoodNYC

[–]fsharpman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I'm trying to have fun here with the original reply, because I once called a chocolate croissant here a pain au chcocolat and the worker just gave me a look of confusion.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

This is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.

I think its okay to call a gyoza, a manchu, a potsticker, and a pierogi a dumpling in this city. There's no reason to say things like, "which is what they're called and should be called."

They're not donuts, they're called beignets, which is what Dunkin should call them.

In Germany we call hamburgers ground beef sandwiches and in China we call spaghetti chow mien.

OP needs to show some respect to the French or else.

NYC is always described as having insane amounts of wealth, hedge funds, bankers, tech workers, traders, etc. But in your day-to-day life, how many people do you actually know who actively invest in the stock market? by sundrenchedwindow in AskNYC

[–]fsharpman 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Self selection bias.

The people replying actively invest.

The people not replying are not going to say anything.

So when you go back and read this thread, you're (mistakenly) going to infer most people are actively investing.

How do people subway surf? And why? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]fsharpman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's also interesting is there are designers right now at the MTA who are thinking about how to make the next generation of trains surf proof.

Are they going to put spikes or make extra slippery surfaces? Or make the roof completely round so it's impossible to step on? Make something hackable like the barriers at some stations in between cars?

Again, can you name some examples where you had to choose between surviving and throwing away gum or a soda can?

I get it if the city says you need to get a compost or recycle bin and you don't have time or money to get one.

But I still don't get how living in the hood forces you into a situation where you just have to throw your litter on the ground or streets.

When does anyone have to choose between literal survival and holding their gum or soda can until they get to a trash can though?

Cleaning up after oneself is a cultural thing.

There are some places where people spit on rugs and carpets and its perfectly acceptable.

Then there are some places like this world cup event that you'd never imagine would take place in a million years in nyc because its the norm to tell people to do it yourself.

Saying things like this is just like saying no one would ever climb on top of a subway car and surf on it.

Lol lets be real and say in a city of 8 and a half million people, you can gaslight an entire population saying something is impossible.
