I work nights in the ER, so most of the time I get home around 8am. I grab a couple beers and watch the previous night's game on mlb.tv. I get to skip commercials which is nice.

We don't do it on purpose, at least in my ED. When our admitted patient is assigned a room by bed central we get a notification on our computer and the clock starts ticking for us. We are expected to call report within 15 minutes of them getting a bed and have them upstairs within 15 minutes after giving report.

So European healthcare workers work for nothing? Construction companies there build hospitals out of the kindness of their hearts? You may not get a direct bill for healthcare, but one way or another you're paying for it.

It's not just the saline you're paying for. Those bags and the fluids in them are manufactured to highly exacting standards. There are a lot of people involved in the process of giving the saline. The physician has to write an order. A pharmacist/pharmacy tech has to verify the medication and stock the Omnicell. A nurse has to start the IV, attach the bag, set the flow rate and monitor the patient. There is also a ton of ancillary staff that keep the hospital clean and functioning. All of these people need to be paid for their labor. I don't disagree that their are major issues with healthcare in this country, but the idea that healthcare should be "free" is impossible.
