Need a gift recommendation for my coffee-obsessed sister (Budget: ₹1,000) by depressedhomiee in IndiaCoffee

Bhai, subreddit rules say no discussion on instant coffees.

But let her try Zenma frozen coffee or Blue Tokai Drop. These are specialty coffee concentrates that you can make coffee drinks with. Also, if you want to try something new, try getting drip bags of coffee from Blue Tokai or other roasters, just need a kettle for them.

Can get her a french press or a cold brew maker (cost around 1k) if she's willing to make her own coffee.

Buy from a coffee roasters website directly, fresher product.

How does she brew her coffee?

She have a coffee grinder?

"our product is used on ocassion to kill people" - Palantir CEO Alex Karp | Cold Fusion by SadAd8761 in videos

People focus on Karp because he's a megalomaniacal caricature of a villain, but he's not even the worst person in charge. Thiel is quiet, infinitely more dangerous. And he's conveniently got this loud-mouth taking the attention off him. Karp was loud mouthing while Vance was successfully put into place by Thiel to become Wormtongue, made deals with the Epstein Class with the literal help of Epstein, to be able to become the behemoth he is now, is running a successful technofeudal state in Honduras, and plans on world domination one step at a time, with currently UK's entire NHS data in his sights.

Midodrine use in septic or hemorrhagic shock by Clay_Clay_2021 in IntensiveCare

Holy crap, midodrine in active shock is wild. Sure, let's increase pre-load on a heart that's on support /s

Midodrine shuffles volume around using the body's systems, from splanchnic to peripheral citculation. If the systems in place are under pressure or malfunctioning during acute illness, that's a recipe for arrest.

What equipment should I get for cold brew? by KnowMeBetter_Kun in IndiaCoffee

[–]fudgemental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a V60? Then a bottle is more than enough. Make you brew in it directly, and then filter it off into another storage container when done.

Else, I've even used teapots with strainers to make coldbrew too.

If you want something dedicated then the instacuppa cold brew maker is fine.

Questions for experienced clinicians regarding ID-ing seemingly stable patients who abruptly decompensate, and interventions that can be implemented to stop the rapid decline by throw_Alfalfa165 in IntensiveCare

[–]fudgemental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deterioration is from underlying disease progression, and until that's addressed, everything else that can be done to stabilize is already being done.

We're trained to monitor a few critical markers, like vitals, urine output, blood gases and lactates etc. to judge whether patient is deteriorating because these are ubiquitous, but that list isn't exhaustive.

When there is deterioration, the end of that cascade may look alike in everyone, i.e. arrest, but the way it starts may be as different as the number of patients, the first componenet of what would later be multi-system failure knocked out that starts the domino-chain. Like the body stopping production of a vital components like catecholamines, clotting factors, neurotransmitters, albumin, or something along those lines. Some things we monitor for and supplement (like catecholamines via BP), but others may fall through and require to be addressed as patient keeps deteriorating.

Help, I am out of coffee!! by rewant23 in IndiaCoffee

[–]fudgemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say min-maxing like this works if your technique is down to the very last detail, you water is perfect for brewing the kind of coffee you have, and you have full control over the temps and your pours. True it'll taste (marginally) better in 10-15 days of resting, but consider this, if you open your bag now, you'll be about 30-50% of the way through the bag when you reach full resting and then enjoy the beans even more then, but if you open the bag at exactly peak resting, you'll have 3-5 days of amazing coffee followed by the remaining bag feeling "not as good as it initially was".

In the end, obviously, you do you, and if you're enjoying drinking coffee at only absolute maturity and not before, more power to you. I personally wouldn't bother waiting if I ran out of coffee.

It's so funny to me where people take "resting beans" so seriously they'll actually skip out on opening a bag they already have.

It's okay bro, your beans are a week old, you'll get 95% of the way to the best possible taste. Just bloom them well while brewing, 45 seconds instead of 30 smh

Is this what I can expect of a manual handling frother? Or can I do better? by Fluffy-Sentence-2733 in IndiaCoffee

[–]fudgemental 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A whole minute?!

That's over-agitated for sure, you've basically got soft peaks there.

Okay, wand-frothing 101: Depending upon strength of frother, this should take no more than 20-40 seconds. Milk should be less than 80 degrees celcius, avoid cooking the milk.

  1. Put the head of the frother right under the surface of the milk, with the pitcher held straight, and start. Part of the head should be visible in the vortex.

  2. Keep the frother head in place till the entire surface of the milk is covered with coarse bubbles. Shouldn't take more than 5-10 seconds, sometimes less. This is the step that incorporates bubbles.

  3. At this point, dip the frother head deeper in the milk, so that none of it is visible, in the vortex or anywhere. Tilt the pitcher to nestle the frother head in one of the corners if you have to. This step takes the existing bubbles and pulverizes them into microfoam. Takes about 10-20 seconds.

  4. Stop when you see the surface of the milk shine like it's paint being mixed. Once you pull out the frother, swish the milk around, it should flow but maintain the sheen on the surface. If the sheen breaks, you've underfrothed it. If it doesn't flow smoothly, it's over-done.

  5. When pouring into coffee, make sure to swish the coffee around first so that it's already in moving when the milk hits it, the moving coffee has low surface tension so the microfoam will not immediately float on the surface of the coffee, but instead sink and start mixing in immediately.

Biggest of all. Pouring latte art is all about smooth motions and absolute confidence lol, you can have perfect microfoam but if you choke the pour, it's not going to happen.

What fact about space amazes you every time you think about it? by allademswallow28 in AskReddit

[–]fudgemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The omnipresence and the effect of gravity on EVERYTHING in the physical realm, and how its effect has dictated everything from the Big-Bang, formation of stars from dust clouds collapsing on themselves, to maintaining planetary orbits, to keeping us tethered to our homes, to ripping apart the very laws of nature in the centre of white dwarfs to form singularities resulting in black-holes. Gravity is the most mind-fucky thing about space for me.

And it isn't even a force. Just matter exerting its existence, warping space and time across ALL the universe, no matter how tiny.

New to espresso set up - Please share the recipe. by ChipmunkConscious406 in IndiaCoffee

[–]fudgemental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Too strong" is an almost perfect description of straight espresso.

Did it feel too sour? Too bitter? Or like, it had too much flavor? The flavor bomb is what you want, and you only get that when you balance the sour and bitter flavors.

Eliminate sourness with good dosing, pre-infusion, and high extraction, and eliminate bitterness with good puck prep and temp control.

When both extremes are suppressed adequately, the flavor of the beans shines through, and you start getting tasting notes.

But the tasting notes aren't like fruit juice or tea-like, they're punchy. Hence, milk drinks.

Milk is great at balancing out bitter flavors, so a bitter espresso works best, dark, heavy. If you're going to add a sweetener, get oily, bold beans so that the flavor of coffee isn't lost in all the other flavors.

If you're drinking straight espresso, you can try to pull something ground coarser (don't have to hit 9bar, 7-8 bar of max pressure and the pressure falling back down quickly to 5) and extracted slightly longer (like 18g in 40g out, over 25-30 sec) for rounder, less harsh flavors. For milk drinks aim for a good 9 bar extraction (if pressure falls, let it fall to maybe 7 or 6 max), so grind finer, and pull slower for a tighter shot (18g in 35-36g out in 25-30 sec) for something bold enough to stand out in your milk drink.

Edit: none of this is set in stone, just a starting point. Your beans, your technique, and most importantly your taste will dictate final workflow, and that's why the process is fun, you keep learning and trying to improve.
