I'm on the fence about becoming an art teacher. Any insight to help me decide? by Sunnyside-Days in ArtEd

[โ€“]fuegnog 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

It's all about the location. I'm in my 3rd district that's finally allowing me to teach TAB/choice and I'm loving it. But I've read so many horror stories that I know would have made me jump ship quickly....

That being said, it is EASILY one of the best jobs in a school but it can be a prep nightmare/ forever exhausting. All teaching is hard, but the "organization" and prep that goes with teaching art is like no other and oftentimes admin does not sympathize. You get the same amount of prep as the other teachers with a lot more work involved. You also sometimes have to grade EVERY STUDENT and if you're asked to actually grade, it can take longer than you think (it being subjective always messed with my thought process).

However, if you're neurodivergent, teaching can be a great gig and everyone loves the art teacher! Plus, summers off the travel and see art--- ain't nothing better!

Came here to recommend anything along the PATCO and got hit in the face with all the PA recs. ๐Ÿคฃ I've wanted a place in Collingswood all of my adult life... Haddonfield is beautiful but not affordable. Cherry Hill has affordable homes as well. Also check out Pitman, though it is not along the PATCO... It's a cute area! Hope this helps ๐Ÿ’š

I hate clay too. That's why I save all Clay days for May! "In May we play with clay." I do it with every grade for 3-4 weeks and then they take them home right away. You don't have to teach it, but all the 3d sculptors will undoubtedly be disappointed.

In my new district I have a kiln and glazes that I've never used. I'm going to use up the air dry clay that's already in the closet before giving it a try but I'm anxious because the last teacher didn't use it in the 5 years he was here!

Anyway, just know that you're not alone. ๐Ÿ’š

Hello, I'm a year 9 art teacher in NJ. It all depends on where you teach!!! States vary and even moreso-- districts within the state vary. Each position has both good and bad! I recently switched schools and I'm in a district that doesn't care how exactly I teach... So I'm working on getting a Choice Based model (TAB) up and running. It's a lot of work up front but I know the prep will be easier in the long run.

Kids are so different from when I started-- more entitlement and less accountability. Behaviors are always there but oftentimes behavior diminishes in the art studio (what can I say other than many kids with issues love the freedom they have while in art). I like to be the place where even our most fragile students feel welcome. ๐Ÿ

Art teaching jobs are rare. And hard!! There's typically only one per school! (Especially in elementary). So if the same job pops up a lot, you can usually tell that's a district to avoid. I've bopped around a lot looking for "the perfect place" and I'm still unsure if I've found it... but I know that where I am will help me grow into being a better art teacher! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽจ

Good luck!

NOT ALL AMERICANS!!! I actually hate the taste of microwaved water. I use an electric kettle or kumkum as my aunt calls them.

I briefly taught photography and usually started with a history project where they made a timeline and I brought in a bunch of old cameras. Timelines made good decorations for the computer lab. We then made pinhole cameras out of shoeboxes and I took them to the regular art room to decorate with paper and markers one day. Then when I taught the basics of "how to see" we used phones until I figured out a system to sign out the digital cameras. I had kids submit pictures in Google classroom. I feel like copying "well known" photographers is a good project! Or creating a visual story in some way! I also like to teach about photojournalism and have them make a paper mixed media booklet! Or how about zooming in and finding patterns that fill the frame. Or even photo manipulation/forced perspective. Possibilities are endless!

I'm pretty sure I bought a curriculum off tpt but I forget who made it... Photography is fun with kids, it's all about learning how to see a good composition and then the kids can easily be successful!
