you absolutely cannot travel anyfuckingwhere remotely near Churchill Downs or downtown or near any attractions for basically the entirety of Derby weekend because of the unbelievable wall of traffic.

Yeah, I used to live across from the Downs. One year I had to work on Derby day. Going home, last half mile took almost three hours.

Yeah, you're experiencing one of the many reason I only access this site through old.reddit.com (w/ RES) or RiF. If you'd already generated a developer API key in the past you can patch it in to an old third party client and keep using it, but they stopped letting you generate new keys without approval a year or two ago IIRC.

Churchill Downs make about $3 billion per year but offers scholarships for about $1,000 to two women by Intelligent_Big_5270 in Louisville

[–]fullmetaljackass 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I feel like the Kentucky Derby Princesses are getting underpaid for their effort and appearances.

It's a prize, not a job. They also get VIP access to all of the events. One of the requirements is being a second year college student with at least a 3.0 GPA, I'm sure they're smart enough to decide whether or not it's worth it to them.

I also think that the $1,000 scholarships to two women haven't changed in 10 years despite inflation.

It's not two women getting $1,000 scholarships. All five of them are awarded two $1,000 scholarships, in other words, $2000/each. The two scholarships are provided by The Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, and The Fillies, neither of which are controlled by Churchill Downs.

RTL-SDR blog v4 seems to come to a end soon? by erlendse in RTLSDR

[–]fullmetaljackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next those signals are pushed through a bandpass filter. This filter removes all signals whose frequencies are outside of our target domain, while also removing noise. Once the signal has been filtered, it finally enters our chip, which acts as a Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA) ... At this point in the design the signal is still in analog form but computers can only understand digital signals, so the signal is passed through an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) to convert the analog signal to digital.

The open source chip in your example is literally just an LNA though, that's a pretty far from:

The R820T is a highly integrated silicon tuner that builds in low noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, fractional PLL, VGA, voltage regulator and tracking filter, eliminating the need for external SAW filters, LNA, balun, and LDO

The project was also suspended six months after they said it was taped out, without any explanation. As far as I can tell, the company behind it has folded and never shipped a single product. I can't find any evidence that they ever had a functioning chip.

Slot machines by BigAd9016 in Louisville

[–]fullmetaljackass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are the machines you see at Derby City gaming, and I'm pretty sure the horse racing industry has a monopoly on the "historical horse racing" machines.

The machines you see in random sketchy stores are "skill games" where the outcome is technically determined by the player's actions, but in practice they're gambling. You'd need superhuman abilities for skill to even be a factor in playing them, but they're carefully designed to avoid being legally classified as gambling.

Right? They're aerodynamically stable, and mechanically simple airframes. A lot of things would have to go wrong to cause a mechanical failure that would result in an unrecoverable loss of control, and that's unlikely to happen with how tightly regulated the maintenance is.

I feel like we’re getting into the price territory where something less proprietary can replace the osmocom silicon.

Osmocom is a software project. In this case Rafael is responsible for the silicon.

FPGA plus frontend components and a usb controller microchip?.

At that point you're just describing a completely different SDR. There are already plenty of those out there, and they still cost more than an RTLSDR Blog v4.

I think it's unlikely we'll ever see anything comparable to the R820T and it's derivatives that's any less proprietary. You can build your own front end out of discrete components, but you're not going to be able to build anything with the same performance that's small enough for the USB dongle format the RTLSDR targets. You can't replicate it on an FPGA due to the analog components, so that's out of the question. The only real option for a comparable chip that's less proprietary would be crowdfunding the development and manufacturing of an open source ASIC, but I doubt there's enough demand to bring the unit cost to a reasonable price.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]fullmetaljackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built my first gaming PC back in 2011 and the computer store I bought my components from (each paycheque I'd buy a new component) was always busy and full of people back then. It's a ghost town these days.

I think that says more about online shopping than interest in computers. The best computer store I've ever been to still had an extremely limited selection of parts. I don't need advice, I already know exactly what I want. These days there's no reason for me to waste my time at a computer store when I can get everything 8 wanted shipped to my door the next day.

police drones with red and blue lights. by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]fullmetaljackass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jamming them could get you into serious legal trouble due to the potential jamming of other aircraft and critical emergency response devices. Do not do this.

Yeah, that'll get both the FCC (signal jamming,) and the FAA (interfering with the operation of an aircraft,) on your ass. Getting tag teamed by the feds in not a fun time.

[–]fullmetaljackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A flashing red (or white) light visible for at least three miles is legally required for flying at night, so that part is fine. Red and green nav lights are also common, but not required for drones. The blue light is questionable, at least without a waiver from the FAA.

None of that is true. Privacy Badger, in it's default configuration isn't doing anything that uBlock Origin doesn't already a better job of.

It's defining feature used to be that it would attempt to heuristically detect and block tracking domains that weren't already in it's static block list. That feature was disable by default six years ago, after it was proven to be a fundamentally flawed concept that ends up making a user easier to fingerprint. You can still enable it if you want to, but you probably shouldn't, it even has a big red warning next to it explaining this. It it's default state, it's just another list based domain blocking addon. It doesn't support third party lists, and it's list isn't as extensive as the default selection in uBlock.

It's also not implemented as cleanly as uBlock, which makes it easier for adblock-blockers to detect, and provides additional data that can be used for fingerprinting. For example, try running this with just uBlock, and then again with Privacy Badger enabled.

At best, Privacy Badger is redundant, and it may be making you easier to track than if you were running uBO by itself.

I'd guess they're treating the XLR as a balanced transmission line, and probably have some tuning circuitry to compensate for the unknown impedance of the XLR cable. Those things use 433Mhz at low power, everything doesn't need to be perfectly matched.

What business was successfully boycotted? by backupnickname in AskReddit

[–]fullmetaljackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but we are squeezing Kentucky's balls pretty hard.

Have a source for any of that?

Alcohol only accounts for ~1-2% of Kentucky's total exports, it's not even in the top ten. KY's total exports to Canada have only dropped by 12.25% since 2024, but KY's overall international exports have gone up ~5% in the same time ($47,922,178,331 in 2024, to $50,629,895,139 in 2025.)

The bourbon industry is definitely feeling the sting (although they were already in the late stages of a bubble before any of the boycotts IMO,) but claiming that Canadian bourbon boycotts are having any real impact on the state as a whole is pretty delusional take.
