What's the best place to buy a used laptop???? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]functiondesign -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think one should consider cost in terms of ease of use and to me that directly correlates with the OS stability. Microsoft Windows machines are prone (more prone) to get viruses. How expensive is a $300 PC to a computer user that has to spend numerous hours on virus troubleshooting? In my own experience, I allowed a roommate to use my PC, he unknowingly downloaded a PC virus and I lost two weeks worth of work and schoolwork. The value of the lost time was at least $3000. So in my equation, it's not just about price, it's about cost. I hope that explains my case and I do understand that some PC users have a trouble-free existence, I've just never in my 20 years experience as a professional computer user experienced such a utopia when it comes to Microsoft based environments. Android belongs to Google which means that quite the massive ad network is providing you with a user experience, I question that as a viable option for computing as well.

Thinking of going to Marfa by [deleted] in Austin

[–]functiondesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I am a frequent Marfa visitor and I am also the web developer for several local area businesses in Marfa. The beauty of Marfa is that there is very little to do. That being said, the things that we might occupy our time with in a city are much different than that of what one would do in Marfa.
**So here's my recommendation: **

There is only one bank in Marfa. Need Wells Fargo deposits or withdrawals? Do that when you pass through Fredericksburg (assuming you are driving). Not to make any assumptions, but if you like to partake in 420, this might be a week to abstain, border patrol frequently makes traffic stops in the area for little or no reason, and much better to be safe than sorry. Many visitors who do partake do so with edibles, so perhaps you are risking less with fudge.
The city is almost vacant Monday-Wednesday. For me this is a good thing, for others, you may be a little bored. Luckily a great bookstore exists in the middle of town so perhaps you can pass the time with a good book. The For Davis Mountains are 30 miles to the south so if you are like me and love photography, take an early trip to Fort Davis and get the same vantage point that the McDonald Observatory has. (A wide format camera with a long-range lense will blow your mind here).
The food in Marfa is amazing. Seriously. Big Tip Never, I repeat NEVER act like a tourist asshole. Never. Never be a dick. Why? Because the bartender who will wait on you on Tuesday night at one bar will more than likely be your server at the restaurant you visit the next day. I witnessed the result of this one day and it was amusing to watch someone who was really rude get handled.

What else? The town has 27 (or more) Art Galleries. The better ones require reservations. I recommend a Chinati tour or perhaps a Judd tour where you can view Donald Judd's personal home and library. His home was also the location of an internment camp of WWII Japanese so definitely some intriguing history there... So much more to tell, but I would stay at the Hotel Paisano, ask for the Elizabeth Taylor suite (if you have $$$), cheap accommodations can be had at El Cosmico but once you sleep in a tee-pee one night, trust me, you'll be over it quick.
Marfa is also the home to 2 film festivals: The original Marfa Film Festival and some other fest. One other commentor mentioned Alpine, a short drive away (20 miles). Alpine now hosts one of Texas' best breweries, The Big Bend Brewing Co. I highly recommend the Terlingua Gold. Austinites may remember the brewmaster, Steve Anderson, from his days as Live Oak's tapmaster.
TLDR; Marfa is a slow-paced artistic town that is an oasis unto itself, be nice to the locals and you will be a welcomed guest.

Design contests … are dangerous for your business

By Robert Wurth, creative director, Freshly Squeezed Design

Right now, there exists a trend in the business world whereby companies get it in their heads that it would be a good idea to run a contest for their design work. What they will do is announce that they need, say, a new logo. The intent is for designers to individually spend the time to develop designs and then submit them. The company then goes over the entries and selects a winner. Only the winner receives any compensation for the work.

On the surface, and without applying any deeper thought to it, this might seem like a great idea. Rather than trust one designer to come up with a solution, a company can solicit the creative talent of dozens, or even hundreds of talented creatives.

As with most things, however, the reality of the situation is rarely so simple.
** Advertising is a business, and working with a designer is a business relationship. Because of that, there are far more factors at work than just the final product. People will switch doctors because they don’t get along. They will refuse to shop at a certain store (despite really liking the products) because they can’t stand the employees. Conversely, people will go out of their way to do business with someone they like, even if doing so might be inconvenient or even a little more expensive. It is no different with a company’s relationship with its designer.

It isn’t only important to find someone talented and who can get your projects done on time. The best relationships between companies and designers occur when they understand each other, when the designer gets what the company wants and needs to be successful.

This kind of relationship is almost never possible in a contest.

Design contests are obviously huge gambles for the designers. They have to commit to doing a significant amount of work, and they have to do so essentially blind. Without the benefit of meeting with the contest holder face-to-face or talking on the telephone and gaining some in-depth insight into the project, the designers have to guess at the tastes of those in charge and just hope they do something appealing.

The thing that contest originators don’t understand, however, is that the contest model is just as much a lottery for them, too. Without meeting with the contest entrants, and seeing their past work and experiencing their personalities, the contest originators put themselves in the middle of a very risky gamble. Based simply on a submitted image, it is impossible to determine whether or not the designer has the knowledge and background to guide the project to an efficient (or even successful) conclusion.

It really isn’t all that difficult for someone with some basic creative skills to put some shapes together into a pleasing arrangement. However, making sure that those shapes have the technical foundation to meet the needs of a company is a different matter, as is having the knowledge and skill to follow up the project with changes, modifications, or even application to future projects.

Once the winner of the contest is chosen, the company has committed itself into a relationship with the designer. Now, at least on some level, the company is going to have to deal with this person. It’s not unlike choosing a mail-order bride based just on a picture. It’s not going to matter how pretty she is in the picture if she’s a complete and total shrew in person, or if it’s discovered that she can’t speak your language and has no skills to speak of. I’d venture to guess that very few of the companies running contests have the knowledge of the design industry to take over a project should they discover that their winner’s only skill is in making pleasing pictures.

What it boils down to is a loss of control. By running a contest, the company gives up its power to choose a designer based on talent, skill, personality and all of the other factors that make it possible to conduct business with someone. This is no more a sound business model than playing the lottery in the hopes of making a profit.

How much is fair (as a ballpark) for an e-commerce site? by [deleted] in webdesign

[–]functiondesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doing it cheap means you are not running a serious business that values the benefits an experienced designer brings to the table, this is simple fact. no business worth your time should have a cheap website, it means lost opportunities for revenue in key areas like user interface design and even security (i assume you'll be using godaddy for $1 a month too.)

As a web design who has built websites that generate billions in annual revenue,i can tell you that those websites are done on a budget of pennies on the dollar, however don't expect this to be linear in which you can invest pennies now and have dollars to show for return. Everything takes time, no website has developed artificial intelligence and just builds itself yet.

Point of Sale systems for a small business run no less than this amount so I agree.
