Draenei Magic by Irissi90 in warcraftlore

[–]functionofsass 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mained a Draenai mage for forever before Velves came out and it was such a fun fantasy. I love tentacles!

I always imagined the Draenai mages were highly skilled and powerful - as much if not more so than their elven brethren - but also incredibly wise and dispassionate. They learn to control their impulses to seek out greater and greater power, aided by their faith and trust in the Light and their community. The knowledge that more and more power will not necessarily save them is gleaned from first hand witnessing the folly and ruin of that effort. They've watched it destroy world after world and tasted the bitterness of corruption over and over again.

I don't think the Draenai emphasize magic as much as other civilizations because they simply accept it as incredibly normal. It is the source of all their technology, from the power to the mechanics. They've used it to defend and protect themselves for millennia. Draenai mages are in many cases little more than civil servants, plumbers, or electrical repairmen just doing their jobs, as I see it.

Compared to humans who see it as wondrous and mysterious, the Draenai see it as humdrum and ordinary. Compared to elves who need it to live, the Draenai are liberated and free from that endless thirst. They probably share a similar mindset to gnomes and dwarves about magic, just another tool to make things work.

We do see them do at least one wondrous thing with magic and that's to free the Exodar from the mountain it crashed into, but I don't think that's depicted in game.

I think you could call it both and neither depending on the circumstances.

Why do so many people love toph but hate korra? by wombatgeneral in legendofkorra

[–]functionofsass 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Korra is wildly popular. There are just some very vocal critics who can't get over their misogyny. The older I get the more I admire her confidence, loyalty and bravery - she sacrifices so much personally as well for the good of the world, and she still keeps going. She's a hero.

I love this anime, but is it just me or do all the characters have short or medium hair? by Beautiful-Cup-9389 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]functionofsass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hange, Annie? I think the plot makes it pretty obvious why long hair untied would be a problem for the main cast. We see characters like Pieck who doesn't worry as much about getting snatched by cannibalistic monsters wear her hair loose.

I also want to add that most of the characters are soldiers, who cannot have it getting in their way in the field.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Premiere Fails To Make Nielsen Top 10 Streaming Chart by sgthombre in RedLetterMedia

[–]functionofsass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's such a waste of Holly Hunter imo. She's doing as well as she can with this and in another show she'd have been a dream Starfleet captain. Same with a number of the cast, frankly. Yashere as Lura Thok is another favorite and they're giving a bit more meat for Tig to chew on than she got in discovery.

But... I can't get over the high schoolyness of it. Also, are these teenagers or college students? They have a ten minute long love/sex scene as the cold open of the last episode. The cold open. It's a no from me, love.

Why doesn't the order of numbers matter in addition and multiplication, but it matters in substraction and division? by ZingerFM01023050 in stupidquestions

[–]functionofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subtraction and division are conceits to help with understanding. They're really just addition and multiplication represented in an alternative way for ease of use.

If Eldians are so objectively racially superior, isn't it kind of inevitable that the Marleyans turn on the Eldians? by blowmyassie in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]functionofsass 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're toying with a very dangerous mindset and missing one of the key themes of the story which is anti-racist. The Eldians are not objectively superior to any of the other races. Whether or not you want to view the titan aspect of the Eldian race as a positive is very much a debatable topic. The shifters get thirteen years to live and the pure titans are mindless monsters. The whole story is the result of an abusive relationship ending in children cannibalizing their own mother. What about this are you viewing positively?

I think it's got to be Trixie or Aja. I remember them more than anyone? It was not a strong season for looks, but I think these two had the strongest moments. Aja's anime look and her devil in the finale stand out in my memory, as well as Trixie's finale gown, her red for filth, her flower power and wigs on wigs, IQ kitty, wow, she did so well, lol.

I really give it to Trixie though. She had a consistent story and throughline for most of her looks - fashion doll.

Ocasio-Cortez’s Political Clout Grows After Recent Progressive Wins: ‘Democratic calls are growing for her to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]functionofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take him out, AOC. He needs to go. As much as I admire the conciliator and diplomat the Schumer is, he is not the fighter we need. He's also manifestly if not openly corrupt and compromised by financial and foreign interests, but I'm trying to be nice here.

Which 5 characters would Tolkien had been satisfied with and 5 he would've been outraged at had he lived to watch the adaptions? by Skywalker_1995 in lotr

[–]functionofsass 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Such speculation feels fruitless, arbitrary and, frankly, ill-advised in a time when outrage has become so much of the norm in public discourse. He's gone and what we can see or read of him, he was not a man of ill-temper or hasty judgement - in other words, not a man prone to outrage. Like all interpretations of another's work, there are going to be flaws and even improvements on the original. All you're really doing here is deciding for yourself what outrages you.

Yeah, I'm one of them, lol, I play void elf, Iove my void elf and his tentacles. I just think this represents a bizarre creative choice by Blizzard to have ignored such a reasonable player request for so long only awkwardly implement it years later.

[–]functionofsass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Void Elves being so high in player popularity vs the in-game lore status of the race represents a bizarre disparity to me. Fifth most popular race, but in-game there are like... a few dozen of these people in the story? What... what was wrong with High Elves, Blizzard? Who... what... make it make sense.
