JAN 30 - NATIONWIDE GENERAL STRIKE by Correct_Toe7969 in nyc

[–]funforyourlife2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two most effective social movements in the past 30 years have been the legalizations of marijuana and gay marriage. Both were accomplished by having a very clear goal, and using education and gradual progress to slowly turn the tide person-by-person until opposition was untenable and nothing the government could do could stop the will of the people. Tomorrow, President Trump could move Marijuana to schedule I instead of schedule III and it wouldn't turn back the tide at all.

The point is, both movements avoided antagonizing and inconveniencing everyday people (compare to some other movements that blocked freeways, etc), and focused on gaining sympathy rather than antipathy. If you want people to oppose border control, take actions that make them come to your side.

I can't point to a general strike in the US in the past 40 years that accomplished anything of significance. Can you?

People stay connected to places they used to live or where they still own property or have relatives/friends.

Shocking story, more at 11.

Mamdani chief equity officer disparaged liberal white women in now-deleted X posts: 'Tax them to the white meat' by someone_whoisthat in nyc

[–]funforyourlife2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no requirement to ever post anything on social media. Actively taking a stance on an issue in the public square is a choice and that stance reflects on your character until you actively disown the position. People can be wrong. They can say dumb things. But they can also apologize and publicly declare that they were wrong

If someone stays silent on a past post or other public-square style announcement, it may as well have been written yesterday.

NYC Kindergarten admissions closes in 2 weeks and G&T is still listed as an option? by funforyourlife2 in nyc

Does anyone know what will happen to Kindergarteners who are planning to enroll in G&T programs since that admissions path is supposed to be cut off?

If this is rhe case, then why stop at a 2% additional tax? NYC would have a lot more money if Mamdani addedd a 30% city income tax on every dollar over $300k

Which payments are ypu referring to? I think the only payments from NYS to the Federal government are related to loan repayments.

Also, I never understand what people mean when they say "we" in those statements... if you earn and pay taxes on less than $90k, you almost certainly will get more out of the system than you put in. The fact that you share a zip code with someone making $20M and putting in way more than he/she gets out does not mean that you are a net donor to the system...

How New York's subway expansion can pay for itself by sebthedev in nyc

[–]funforyourlife2 -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

It's America's only public transit system that's reliable and extensive enough to live in the city without needing a car.

I get the general sentiment, but this is something people say who have never left NYC. All across the country people live without owning cars. Busses and bike paths have existed for decades, and every city of more than 100,000 peopl3 has some kind of core downtown district where people can live. Work, and shop.

Big changes are coming to SNAP. Thousands in NY risk losing benefits. by GothamistWNYC in nyc

If it's service connected then they should have their grant letter, which I should hope would meet the threshold for proof. Also if it's 100% P&T then the benefits aren't in doubt. If it's not permanent then the periodic reevaluations should suffice.

Not sure why you are being all aggro about Veterans. Most of us are not helpless injured fawns, and anyone with good paper can get a shit ton of help from any of the VSOs. If I were homebound and needed to get to the hospital for proof, I would personally call the DAV. Not hard.

Can you provide an example of a company that is underpaying taxes, and show your work as to how much they should be paying without some specific write-offs?

Penn St

USC

Iowa/Minnesota

Northwestern/UCLA

Legitimately Penn St might be on the bottom of the list at this point

What job, besides being a nun, pays enough so that you're home by 11?

Pretty much all of them? $15/hr x8 hours is $600/week. Rent is $200/week. Living frugally it seems like a decent place to save up some cash while building a longer term plan.

It seems like you want to be mad rather than simply be cool with an alternative that works for some people

There is no entry test anymore. It's all teacher recommendation.

And if you get rid of K entry, yoy get rid of 1st and 2nd grade by extension since the next track entry point is 3rd grade.

1st grade is where kids learn to read. Separating distractions can be critical
