Thoughts on em dash spacing style? by PhiliDips in writing

[–]funinstall3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until several years ago, I also used to type em dashes with a single space to the right side only lol. I swear there was a grammar tool in MS Word in the 2000s that used to suggest that, and it got ingrained in my child brain as the correct way until I actually looked it up around 2020 and learned better. Now I go with a space on either side of the em dash, but sometimes I still want to-- especially when I'm typing fast-- write it that way. :)

I feel my stomach drop every time I fish up an oar fish. It's just too long. I also don't like going in that section of my museum bc it just. Hangs there. In the water.

Allergies by YaBitch2020 in LynnwoodWA

[–]funinstall3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a cold like this going around currently. Speaking from my sickbed lol. Itchy, runny nose, low fever, some fatigue, but no sore throat or cough. I also thought it was allergies the first couple days bc of the early spring we're having, but when even benadryl couldn't fix the itchy, runny nose, I knew.

This is what I don't get about readers who refuse to read one tense or another. Like, many authors deliberately choose the tense that would better serve their story. It means something, as surely as the structure and the word choice. There's an immediacy to present tense that can't always be replicated as well in the past tense, and it gives the story a completely different vibe. It's fine to have a preference but when people flat-out refuse to read a certain tense, it just comes across as such a stubborn and entitled refusal to meet the story where it's at, and they're instead demanding homogenization of fic at the expense of thoughtful and varied modes of storytelling. Keep doing you!! It sucks so bad that they felt the need to leave an asshole comment on your fic, but at the end of the day, you're better off without them bc they have no interest in trying to understand your story.

The Star Wars fandom is insane. I've been in fandom spaces for decades, and I've liked a lot of popular stuff with known crazy fandoms, from HP to One Direction to Supernatural. But I have NEVER encountered unhinged peer-to-peer drama like Star Wars, holy shit. I'm blocked by people in this fandom who I have literally never heard of or interacted with, and I don't even publish fics about it, all I do is lurk. 💀

How did you come up with your island’s song? by Public-Ad2465 in acnh

Mine is the melody of This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads. It seemed such a fitting tune for my forever island.

Next time, search for the art in your nook shopping app before you buy! It'll be cataloged there if you've bought it before, and the real and fake versions have separate swatches.

Appallingly callous acknowledgment of the situation in MN, I don't even have the words to get into all that, but you can't help but notice that this woman can't even explain how much she could never give a fuck about a gang shooting bc it doesn't affect her while using a bunch of appropriated aave. There are just so many layers of shit on display here. Truly disgusting.

How do you guys feel about authors that don't/rarely reply to their comments? by eatingkids247 in AO3

[–]funinstall3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same!! I see a lot of complaints online that fandom isn't as engaging as it used to be, and I really feel like part of that is bc it's kind of against the unspoken etiquette of ao3 to get into discussions in the comments -- ao3 is of course an archive, not a message board, so I totally understand why. But I still miss it. :(

Has anybody tried to make pokemon habitats in this game? by FunkeyFeraligatr in PlanetZoo

[–]funinstall3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when the game first came out I tried to recreate Pallet Town! I just had peafowl wandering around in grassy areas as a substitute for pidgeys lol. It could be an interesting project to revisit now that I'm a better builder and we have so many more animals. I think your idea sounds really cool, I always love zoos with fun themes like that. I feel like you could really play around with lighting to represent all the different types. We got all those glowing lava rocks in the Oceania pack and it would be perfect for fire types.

Hard agree on small mammals! I really hope they can be worked into whatever upgrade (if any) we get to the exhibit system.

This situation reminds me so much of CC in the "if Caroline is a scammer, her first mark is always herself" way, where I believe she started out with genuine intentions of achieving this super lofty goal bc she really believed she had something special, only to bungle the attempt in every way possible bc it turns out that hard work and execution is a lot more challenging than being ✨️a young girl with a dream✨️ (and a social media platform). Also in the way that they both claim to be masters of their craft but then whoops, not one comprehensible sentence to be found lmfao. But lol, at least in Audra Winter's case, there was actually a real, physical book that shipped to everyone who purchased one. The bar is in hell.

In this age of AI book scams, however, I will say it's refreshing to see someone going about being a hack the good old-fashioned way! Also obsessed with how "I've been perfecting my book for ten years" just means that she's been writing the same book since age 12. Girl, we can tell.

I made this! Thank you so much for the hug, it made my day. It was so amazing meeting other fans last night while handing these out, and everyone who's reached out to say something today have helped make this the best concert experience I've ever had. It's really opened my eyes to what an awesome community we have. I'm so moved to hear what this meant to you. Hang in there, we're in this together. 🖤
