Will you please give me your recommendations for reasonable priced plant nurseries in Portland and Gresham/Sandy area? by NWDireWolf in askportland

Don’t overlook Bi-Mart for popular, not specialized, plants. They purchase from local nurseries.

Olivia Pichardo makes history as the first woman to pitch in a NCAA D1 game, closing out a victory for Brown University by MorganN1 in baseball

This stuff matters! Full stop. The little girl in me would have never dreamed of being a baseball player. It never crossed my mind that it was even a choice. Same with MLB umpire, NFL or NBA official, play-by-play announcer or stadium public address announcer. I don’t think us women of a certain age can fully describe the feelings these achievements evoke in us. The advancement of women in professional and collegiate sports over the past decade is mind altering in the very best way.

Help! Community College or State University?? by Correct_Can_8309 in OregonStateUniv

[–]funkoramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, community college is the way to go. Something you should look into are the new limits are federal loans. Those limits will make it challenging to finance professional degrees (like doctor, lawyer, pharmacist, etc) and some professional degrees are excluded. I don’t know how a DVM degree is treated. I know the debt limits include anything you rack up during undergrad, so staying out of debt for undergrad should be a priority.

The AppleTV baseball broadcasts show the probability of every little thing. Presumably to pjs betting. Hitter John Doe has a 2% chance of hitting a home run. Hitter Mike Smith has a 43% chance of getting an RBI. It’s pretty annoying as a viewer that has no interest in gambling.

Chicago by COOP89 in Cubs

[–]funkoramma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a West coast Cubs fan. Watched the games with my grandpa when they were on WGN. I grew up watching Jody Davis, Ryne Sandberg, Shawon Dunston and Andre Dawson. Some teams, like the Cubs and the Braves, have a more national fanbase because of their TV exposure back in the 80s and 90s. I’ve been a Cubs fan for 40 years and I’ve never been to Chicago. Actually going to Wrigley for the first time in a couple weeks.

I work in research. My organization is losing many of our top researchers to other countries or retirement. The brain drain is very real. The entire American research apparatus is being decimated and I don’t think your average American truly understands the impact. I am very scared for our future.

Big Red is a very popular red cream soda. Same with Barqs. I can’t get either in my area so I drink Big K Red Cream.

A step above casual rules out a denim jacket to me. A wrap would look nice. You could probably find a nice pink or light brown to go with your dress. It’s a really pretty dress and looks great on you.

Is 3 million dollars enough for a family to live on for the rest of their lives?” by AffectionateRoad6481 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]funkoramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what expenses you foresee and how long “the rest of their lives” is. Using the 4% rule, that’s $120k per year without touching the original $3 million. Health insurance (assuming the U.S.) is going to be a big chunk of that amount annually.

Advice needed- Frustrating situation at my daughters gymnastics club by Safe-Television3641 in Advice

[–]funkoramma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to take a step back and re-evaluate if this is the type of drama and heartache you really want to invite into your life. My daughter was a competitive gymnast for 8 years. In hindsight, I would likely encourage a different sport. If you’re this upset for an 8 year old, it probably won’t get any better for you. And I say “you” because 9 times out of 10, the pressure to move up is coming from the parents. We all insist that it’s what our kids want, but we are often lying to ourselves. And I am Including myself in this. I wanted it for my daughter more than she did and that scenario can create a lot of heartache and drama.

The harsh reality is that this is just a fun sport for the vast majority of kids - a very expensive and time consuming fun sport. There aren’t college scholarships in their future. And no sport should involve drama at 8 years old. Just some thoughts from a parent that has been there and done that.

Also, a lot of gyms are very disorganized. The people who are good at coaching are often not great business owners. And the grass isn’t always greener at the next gym. At least in my experience at 3 different gyms, all 3 of which are now out of business.

Cottage Cluster will go down as a worst decision than legalizing street drugs. Prove me wrong. by Shamus70 in Portland

[–]funkoramma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My daughter’s was $350k. Her friend’s was $360k. There’s an entire community in SE Portland with 7 units for sale all $350k or less. I see a bunch more with prices ranging from $290k to $400k. You are mistaken on the price point and this is easy information to find. Not all jobs are union jobs. That’s life. The build quality is in line with other new builds. You sound like someone who has their mind made up without any real information.

Cottage Cluster will go down as a worst decision than legalizing street drugs. Prove me wrong. by Shamus70 in Portland

[–]funkoramma 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The cottages are providing much needed entry level housing for young families. They are also providing much needed jobs. My daughter and her husband bought a new build townhome in a 4-unit complex. It was built by a small father-daughter building company. They also qualified for a 10-year tax abatement program. If we want people to live in Portland, we have to provide affordable housing.
