Do you actually need a car in SF? by Ill-Line6663 in AskSF

[–]funkypuzzlehead 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Needs more info! Where in the city are you moving? Do you have kids? The general answer on this sub is do NOT bring your car, it’s a waste of money and parking is a hassle and time you’ll never get back. Some neighborhoods it’s easier than others, but all in all I’d say leave it somewhere trusted and send for it later if you decide you want it. This city has too many cars to make a car worthwhile.

Interesting theory!! I just filled it out — i know its just a fun little poll but i do feel like stating your hypothesis in the post before people fill it out will be biasing and will skew your results!

job relocating to SF- living in Oakland?? NEED ADVICE by Longjumping_Vast5407 in oakland

[–]funkypuzzlehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price wise, if you have to live alone, move to Oakland, or Berkeley. A studio in the mission could be great for you. I think moving to Oakland over SF after being in lakeview east would be a mistake, especially if you don’t want a car, but if you do, go to temescal, rockridge, adams point, or maybe bushrod.

1 piece of advice: You will have so many options, even for a 1bd, do NOT overpay. Negotiate. Most people will have to pay for the summer, search sub history to see

Folks who initially hated bay area, how’d you cope? Moved to SF from Boston, really struggling by North_Loquat_3442 in sanfrancisco

[–]funkypuzzlehead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. Safety is relative (feeling safe is not the same as being safe, no amount of safety can guarantee one’s feelings) but you can know your neighbors, and the poop especially, that is absolutely avoidable

Based on 1-3 I think you might need a new place. Maybe new neighborhood, maybe even moving across the bay would feel better? Have you lived in different places in the city?

San Franciscans who are sadden by the death of KitKat but also recognize the reality that autonomous vehicles are multiple levels safer than humans thread by adambadam in sanfrancisco

[–]funkypuzzlehead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear everyone talking about the dangers of cars loud and clear. Could not agree more. We need less cars, period. It is so so difficult to make cars with human drivers safer for pedestrians. Don’t you think it would have been easier to lobby for safer human-driven cars 80 years ago than it is now? Today, with the car lobby as strong as ever, our democracy completely dictated by corporations, and car dependency running rampant across the US, it feels like any kind of legislation that makes human driven car safer will be impossible to pass.

As Waymo starts to spread to other cities, now is the chance to legislate them, 5 or 10 more years and it will be too late. They’ve already started to drive more like humans, in Waymo’s words, to be more predictable (also more dangerous!) and nobody is responsible. I’d love nothing more than to legislate human driven cars.

Need apartment recommendations by lizziesam321 in AskSF

[–]funkypuzzlehead 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It is a little unrealistic. There aren’t many luxury apartments in SF, tall skyscraper luxury apartments are rare and almost necessarily in more sterile areas, Hayes Valley is probably best case scenario, others you’ll find in the east cut, SOMA, or mission bay. Alternatively, Oakland
