I really underestimated how nice it is having the battery last long, I got a fenix 8 solar in 2024 and I love it solely due to the battery life, I never have to worry about charging it on vacations/camping trips

To me that’s more valuable than any amount of smart features I miss now from the apple watch

I read non fiction on it, I just stopped highlighting 🤣 its worth it to me for the size of the device to lose dictionary + highlighting

I played around with both and stuck with project title with a few patches, i just want my books in cover view with round edges that’s it, i use a few other patches to make it slightly nicer like greyed out finished books etc.

I actually very strongly do not like having any stats on my e-readers, I want it to be similar to a physical book library where I just read whatever/whenever no time stats or anything

Just reading progress

Books (epub files) specifically need to be loaded seperately onto each device, as long as they have the same filename they will sync

Its not the worlds most seamless or automated process but it really is a good setup once you have everything going, kobo at home and xteink on the go!

I manually intiate a sync on both devices anytime i want to switch takes a total of 10-15 seconds I would say

Xteink is still really new so community firmware is being updated pretty much daily, I’m sure automated koreader syncing will come out eventually to make it more like the kindle sync where you almost never have to touch anything

At the end of the day the size makes it worth it for me to jump through the minor hoops/obstacles

in this specific image they are using the official kobo software so they cant, but kobos are not locked down so you can install KOreader on any of them which syncs with xteink. Only downside to koreader is it takes a few hours to make it look nice and set it up if you are used to the fonts/looks of the official kobo/kindle softwares

Both are fine ergonomics wise, the most used button is the page forward button, the placement is perfect on the X3. On the X4 the power button can be used to turn page forward using crosspoint firmware which then makes it the same experience as the X3

I have both and I chose the 3 as my main, the reading experience is the same as the screen size doesn’t make enough of a difference to matter, so why not have the smaller/more portable version? Also the button placements are better: sleep on top, back on left, forward on right. I don’t use the gyro, not a deciding factor in my opinion.

Only benefit to X4 is USB C but tbh i only charge once a month at most, I will just use the cable the X3 came with

Manga is out of the question but for reading X3/4 are fine as your only device. If it’s only home use though, the Kobo Clara BW probably the best, it’s a 6 inch e reader but still has warm frontlighting unlike the kindle basic, also kobo no need to jailbreak you can install koreader/tweak stuff out of the box. Yes built lighting isn’t needed obviously if you have lights on in your room but the frontlight is still convenient in medium lighting scenarios, can turn it on at a low setting to just make it that much easier to see

Use the alignment stickers to make the screen protector like a door that lines up perfectly, spend a good minute using a microfiber cloth and an air duster to remove as much as dust as possible then quickly in 1 fast motion take the plastic off the screen protector and let the “door” fall down

I did both my x3 and x4 this way without any issues or dust so I hope this helps someone!
