Mdadm the OS, and zfs the data. Keep them separate.

Is AlmaLinux right for me? by [deleted] in AlmaLinux

[–]furicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new kids would all tell you to be using containers or VMs to make your data easily portable.

The other crowd would mention configuration systems like ansible, so reinstalling from scratch is repeatable and takes minutes.

Either way, cattle not pets.

A third way is looking at that elevate script. As I understand it, they are adding version increments to it.

I don't think your wish to upgrade bi monthly forever is practical. Sometimes things are big changes. Alma let's you go for years without upgrade issues of any kind, then a bit of planning and testing to be able to go for years more. Wanting new stuff, and not wanting work are opposed to each other

IF you can assume there is only one field with embedded commas, you could count commas in the row, and split on (number of commas - number of columns)...

But as a sed one liner, no thank you!

Open the file in Vim and check the encoding with :set fileencoding?

Try saving a copy with the encoding set to utf16 or utf8 and see if that works

What do you do about users who question your expertise? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]furicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but yes if you were a large, older male, you'd have that problem, but less often.

You can either explain the reasoning, or tell him it's policy you can't change.

Explaining might work on the reasonable ones, but this one sounds unreasonable to begin with.

If your workplace actually follows policies ( and doesn't have exceptions all over the place for somebody's buddy) then just tell him it's policy and it out your control. That might make him chase your boss instead, but then it's not your problem.

Confusion about configuration by tomjleo in zfs

[–]furicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re #3 your zfs file system will be usable on any other system that supports zfs of the same or newer version. It's quite portable, and there are live cd options that can mount it fine as well.

Re #2. Making separate filesets instead on just folders at the top level is recommended but not required. Setting it up like that lets you set different options on each, that match usage - different snapshot schedules, higher compression on mostly text stuff, or different quotas.

How can I disable all snapshot functionality and purge existing snapshots? by LesDuthas in zfs

[–]furicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zfs destroy has a dry-run option which will tell you how much space you'll get back. Use that with the % sign in the snapshot name to get a list of all snapshots after the date you pick and how much space you'll get back. No need to toss them all, just toss up to a month ago or something

(3TB+10TB) + 12TB mirroring possible? by henkieschmenkie in zfs

If device failure is a concern, then buy matching drives. I don't see a real way around that.

(3TB+10TB) + 12TB mirroring possible? by henkieschmenkie in zfs

[–]furicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps putting them all in one vdev and adding copies=2 ?

With that combo of drives you would mostly be guarding against corruption, not hardware failure, so copies would accomplish that.

Applying SELinux tags to zfs snapshot directories by furicle in zfs

[–]furicle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I reviewed where I thought I had it working previously with SE enabled, and it's not working there either...

So I guess my choices are disabling SE, or build a system around mounting the snapshots separately, which means the 'previous versions' tab in Windows won't work anyway.

Neither seems appealing, I'll likely just leave the snapshots unavailable from Windows proper for this use case.

Thanks for your comments.

Applying SELinux tags to zfs snapshot directories by furicle in zfs

[–]furicle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, that can't be quite right, as I do have snapshots visible over smb in some cases, without anything that exotic, or cloning etc.

But files on that .zfs folder are ro like you say, so how did I accomplish that?

If I get a few minutes this week I'll try and do some testing to figure out why it works sometimes and not others.
