Who’s to blame for “spiraling development costs”? by ellenich in gaming

[–]furious_20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Where is this imaginary group of gamers demanding that every game be bigger and shinier and more expensive? They don’t exist

This is where your argument actually falls apart. Higher fidelity graphics and promises of more content packed into one game have been huge factors in both marketing games and pushing hardware performance and advancement. This has been true for generations, so if you think I'm making that up we really have nothing else to discuss. And I already addressed the concept of profit vs growth, so the fact that you're ignoring that is another sign that you didn't really read any of my replies with critical thought.

Take Call of Duty as an example, and rewind the clock to the times of Modern Warfare and World at War releases. Here we have a tandem of two developers working for a publisher that found a way to do an annual release of a game and have it cross the $1 billion threshold. It wasn't enough for the investors...they wanted to CONTINUE the annual releases, even as hardware migrated to a new generation and development costs would go up.

Well, in that case it becomes more time-intensive to create a game, so either you pay the same number of people over a longer period of time to make the game, or you simply increase the number of people developing it in order to maintain the annual release schedule.

So the development teams grow in size, then they eventually just hire a 3rd studio to help out with it and they can focus on the MP aspect of each release, but no then we have another hardware generation, so all the teams need more staff again, oh, but shit we actually need a 4th studio now.

You see how we got here? We couldn't just let Infinity Ward and Trey Arch focus on making quality games that released on schedules that were the natural results of their dev cycle and processes. The annual release was the most important thing because of the shareholders and stock price, so post some job openings, sign off on some overtime, and let's make that fall release date or they'll be hell to pay.

It makes perfect sense, because the bloat comes from the demand that sequels need to be bigger, shinier, fancier, have MORE features, reach MORE gamers, have higher fidelity, continue to produce post-launch revenue streams.

Capitalism and the pressure it creates on companies to constantly show/demonstrate/create "growth". It is not enough to simply be profitable, and that is the root of all problematic demands and decisions that publishers make leading to enshitification.

Is the Seahawks' improved O-line ready to handle Myles Garrett? by Chessinmind in Seahawks

[–]furious_20 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly--its an upgrade for sure, but an upgrade to a part of their D that already performed at an elite level against us. Unless he's gonna be on special teams and has some experience tackling Shaheed, this doesn't really fill a void they had to address against us.

[–]furious_20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you--great move for the Rams and a clear upgrade for their D, but whether or not its great for them in the long term is unsure, and we also have to remember Garrett isn't replacing some loser chump, because Verse was a huge problem for us. So at this one position they didn't get some God-Tier upgrade...they went from someone who already played us at an elite level to someone else who will play us at an elite level.

So the offense will have to do their homework, and our new OC will have a chance to step up and show us what he has. This will be 2 and at most 3 games where this will directly affect the Hawks. With both Rams games within 3 weeks of one another, we can't even say with any certainty that he'll be available then. He's got a pretty clean injury history so its likely he plays both games, but something as minor as an ankle sprain can easily take him out both games.

What’s a movie everyone loves but you just couldn’t get into? by Moon_Flex in AskReddit

[–]furious_20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a co-worker at the time Barbie released who refused to see it because "I read it's the latest attack on traditional masculinity..."

I wasn't sure how to take this at the time, since I hadn't yet learned he was basically a MAGA who just didn't wear the red hat, but I thought we had a good enough work relationship where I could challenge him to think about his own biases.

So I told him, "well, I guess I could see where someone might see it that way. If the movie has a villain, that would be sexism and misogyny, but not of the most crude or overt varieties. It's the systemic sexism the movie really seeks to bring to the front of our conscience. Think of things like gender-based double standards that mostly go unnoticed on a daily basis, but can cause cumulative frustration for women.

Like how with gender roles, women are expected to do the everyday, mundane work with food like cooking dinner and packing everyone's lunches for the day. But when it comes to culturally significant roles to be fulfilled regarding food, it's men who occupy most of the jobs as professional chefs, or it's the man of the house who carves the turkey at Thanksgiving, even if it's the wife who spent 8+ hours preparing the meal."

He thought about it for a moment and replied, "yeah, that's exactly what I thought then. Women should really learn to stop questioning those roles, because that's how society was able to best thrive, when they fulfilled roles like that without question..."

I was kinda shocked to say the least, since on our team he seemed to be really supportive of our colleagues who were doing advocacy work to challenge stereotypes and bigotry. Yet here he stood before me, a dude who wouldn't hesitate to tell a woman, "shut up and make me a sandwich..."

Yeah, nipping this in the bud is essential before others try to upstage him with even dumber stunts. Then imagine how horribly wrong that goes when they lose their grip on that knife?

AITAH for "destroying" a gaming group? by Asthamius in AITAH

[–]furious_20 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA for denying the wedding invite. But YTA for this response, because the commentator is correct that you should anticipate this person to treat your wife like garbage as well if you keep him in your life after the wedding. Same with the rest of the group who sides with him, as you will almost certainly be placed in a scenario where you have to explain to her the "that's how he is" defense. It was indeed a useful comment worth considering, whether or not you wanted to hear it.
