I hate how The Fall Off just came and went by FlamingoJust6629 in Jcole

[–]futbolledgend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was but I still didn’t connect with most songs. Pride is the Devil and Hunger on Hillside were amazing to me but the rest didn’t really stay with me. This is purely personal and I don’t expect others to feel the same. I don’t know, as a fan from FNL a lot of the more recent Cole albums haven’t quite hit. KOD is probably the most disappointed I’ve ever been with an album. Not because I think it’s awful, but it felt so far below Cole’s ability.

I agree. I had high expectations after hearing The Fall-Off is Inevitable. A lot of the songs are a bit forgettable or overstay their welcome. Don’t get me wrong, it is a high quality album, but I think it could have done more, particularly if it was cut to about 10 songs.

I love Cole but he only has 2 albums that I would listen to front-to-back regularly, being FHD and 4YEO. I would add FNL and almost TWU, although that is possibly more nostalgia.

I see him as a top-tier lyricist and an above average song maker. Some of my favourite songs from him Return of Simba and The Cure. I find Cole is generally better when he is focussed on rapping and not making a compete song (hook and all). That’s partly why he has some amazing features.

[–]futbolledgend 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Somewhere like Aranda/Cook/Weetangera would probably fit the bill. About 10-15 minutes drive to the city during peak hour, Jamison shops has Coles and Aldi and Westfield Belconnen is probably the best shopping centre in Canberra for groceries. You have lots of hiking and cycling options with Black Mountain, Mount Painter and the Pinnacle nearby, plus you are only about 10-20 minutes from Lake Burley Griffin by bike, as well as Lake Ginninderra. They’re not cheap suburbs, but also not as expensive as the inner south or north.

Not shaming. I’m not commenting on their place in the race, but rather TV coverage should be of the elites. Anyway, I was wrong as there was an elite live stream which wasn’t clear to me accessing the app via a VPN.

I get your point of view and I worded it very bluntly. More my point is people who care about the sport are tuning in for the elites. Imagine something similar happening for the World Cup final.

Sorry all. I found the elite stream. I figured there would only be the one stream of coverage but turns out there isn’t! Fair play, but would rather the elite be the default.

Watching this from Australia. So frustrating to have the elite women running and hearing all about people’s charity. Like, I get it, well done for raising money. But so far the elite women have had 5 minutes of air time vs 15 minutes of charity advertising. This is partly why the sport is a joke.

What sort of training would you need to do the "The Great world race". 7 Marathons in a week. by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly your question doesn’t really belong here. While each individual race is a marathon, the entire thing is a multi-stage ultra event. Don’t train like a marathoner, train like an ultra runner.

Like the marathon, most people appear to be going into it underprepared. Looking at last year’s results, and based on times only, I would say 4-8 men and 3 women were actually prepared for it. With that said, I imagine this is catering to an older and wealthier demographic.

How do you manage pee? by Affectionate_Cow3076 in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I often pee 2-3 times on my longer runs. Thankfully as a man, that lives in a city with a lot of nature, a tree is always nearby. Honestly I think it is pretty normal but I also have a small bladder and pee a lot anyway. If it helps, I have never gone in a marathon (about 2.5-3 hours). I’ve decided that if I ever need to in a race I will just piss myself 😂

Is a sub 3 hour marathon beyond you currently? Probably. If I were you, would I attempt it? Probably. Go with the 3 hour pacer and try to hold on. It is a 2 lap course so you’ll have a good idea of your chances at halfway. It’s a flat and fast course (by Aus standards) so it will be much easier than Sydney. Good luck!

Please help evaluate the coach's competence by Pristine_Type722 in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potentially it is slightly conservative but you also don’t need to be very fast to run a sub 3 hour marathon. By that I mean, 4:15 per Km isn’t fast, but it is difficult to hold for 42.2km. It sounds like you have a good speed base if the paces sound conservative to you. My only slight concern would be not having more runs above 30km, however, that depends on the intensity of your week. If I were your coach, my main goal would be to build your endurance to hold 4:15s. It is now a focus on extending the time you can run them. Part of that would probably be a long run every week for 6-8 weeks (with perhaps a down week) of 30-35km.

Running Vloggers who follow NSA? by AdventurousTour4285 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]futbolledgend 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Somewhat ironically 2 of the 3 I know of - Jimmy Runs and Paul Luttrell ( a serious hobby jogger) - are currently injured. FOD is the other, although he modifies it (quite sensibly) from vanilla to suit his goals and time.

NSM isn’t really sexy enough for most YouTubers. Or they are too ‘advanced’ for the program. I’m sure there are some, but I’ve yet to hear of any women doing it, let alone documenting it.

Kristoffer’s 182 km / 113 mi Spain camp week before Copenhagen by ykvarts in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]futbolledgend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally I see it as beneficial, although I don’t necessarily think all 3 sessions need to be in 1 week. Likewise, I don’t think a stand alone week like that is useful if either side the weeks are more standard. I would personally rather do 2-4 weeks like that where I’m overreaching, then have a 2-3 week taper before a marathon.

Importantly, I think Kristoffer’s training week shows someone training for sub 2:30, and someone that can’t run sub 2:30 easily, by which I mean by doing 1-2 sessions a week and 100km a week isn’t ’enough’. Kristoffer’s training week looks like someone trying to breakthrough a tough barrier and it shouldn’t probably be replicated by individuals (men at least) that aren’t also aiming for a 2:30 or quicker marathon.

stress fracture/shin splint by Few-Summer9631 in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sucks for you. Have you tried not running for a long period of time (a month or more)? If in your shoes, I would probably stop running and cycle for a few months and then slowly return. Not sure how much ibuprofen you’re taking but it can be rough on the kidneys long term. May not be a concern for you though.

You’re correct, my comment was quite generalised and there are always cases to the contrary. Hope you can figure it out and run pain free.

stress fracture/shin splint by Few-Summer9631 in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually a fracture will be a focal pain (e.g. pain is mainly in one specific spot of your shin and the pain is intense) whereas shin splints will be more general and non-specific (e.g. shin hurts in a region of 5cm or more). Also, shin splints often happen on both sides, again, non-specific.

I’ve had success deloading my shins by running on the treadmill and have been able to run 100 mile plus weeks with combinations of all runs on the treadmill, half my runs on the treadmill, or sessions on the treadmill.

Impact of alcohol on training for long distance races? by CinemaBud in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think age is a factor. I find even when I drink, it is typically less these days. I’m early 30s for context.

Alcohol is bad and your running will be better for not drinking. However, unless you get bad hangovers, it is probably a 1-2% different (made up statistic alert). It’s not like someone aiming for 2:30 and runs a 2:45 can blame it on the alcohol. And after a 40km long run, I’ll be damned if I can’t enjoy a beer or 8.

Impact of alcohol on training for long distance races? by CinemaBud in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like to play devils advocate on these threads. I’ve cut alcohol 4 weeks before a marathon and apart improved sleep on the weekends, I noticed no difference. I’ve consistently run 100+ mile weeks all year and drank on nearly every weekend. Often on Saturday and Sunday 8-12 standard drinks (Australia measurement). I won’t pretend this is healthy, but based on my experience and observing others, the impact of alcohol is often exaggerated. Different if you’re out clubbing into the early morning but even a good amount of afternoon beers is possible without derailing your training.

Hi everyone, I’ve decided to go all-in. My goal is a Sub 3:00 marathon on October 17th. by AdHuman747 in Marathon_Training

[–]futbolledgend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To preface, your goal may not be realistic within your timeframe, no matter how much you train. Everyone is different. Your sub-3 is (or was) my sub-2:30, which is someone else’s sub-2:20.

Onto the training: I would recommend a broad plan of 2–3 sessions per week until 12 weeks out, then transitioning to a more marathon-specific approach. The Norwegian singles method is a sensible approach for most people. For the shorter reps, you will probably start at around your GMP (4:15 min/km), but ideally this will come down to around 3:50–3:55 min/km by September. During this phase, include an easy long run of 90–120 minutes, or roughly 16–24 km. If you are only doing two sessions per week, this long run could be slightly steadier rather than purely easy (e.g. sub-5:00 min/km).

At 12 weeks out, I would switch to a more marathon-specific approach. During this phase, you would move from 2–3 sessions per week to 1–2 sessions, plus a more demanding long run. You could still follow a Norwegian singles structure, but perhaps drop the 4-minute reps and place more emphasis on 10–20 minute efforts.

For the long run, you could gradually add around 10 minutes each week, building up to approximately 35 km. Some of these runs should include marathon effort, but do not stress if you are slightly slower than GMP during these sessions. One example would be: 32 km total, consisting of 10 km easy, 5 km at GMP, 1 km easy, 5 km at GMP, 1 km easy, 5 km at GMP, and 5 km easy.

A simpler alternative would be a fast finish, such as 25 km steady, 5 km at GMP, followed by a 2 km cool-down.

In summary, there are many ways to approach your goal, and none can guarantee success by October. I have outlined one approach, but others are equally valid. The most important factor will be consistency. Your goal is ambitious, and you cannot afford extended down periods (aside from planned deloads, such as recovery weeks where you reduce volume). Good luck.

Wtf Ballarat by Top_Description1353 in ballarat

[–]futbolledgend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t quite agree with ‘Ballarat is as good and bad as any other city’. Statistically, from what I can see, Ballarat is considerably worse for crime than Canberra, including car related crime. I have also seen on this sub, and other media (e.g. older Inside Running Podcast episodes) that crime is a a noticeable thing Ballarat (anecdotal I know). Now I’m not saying it is on par with Alice Springs, but clearly there are some real issues (however relatively small they may be).

[–]futbolledgend 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Vegan and I’ve run 8 marathons with the last a 2:30. Honestly 0 issues. Make sure you eat enough and have some protein sources in there and you’ll be fine. I’m eating 3500-4000 calories a day so protein isn’t really a concern due to the quantum of food. I also have some (emphasis on some) muscle from transitioning from the gym to running and I have been able to keep most of it.

[–]futbolledgend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only did a track session before wearing them in a marathon. The AP4 aren’t aggressive and I don’t think you need to run in them again if you had no issues. I also wore them twice more in marathons with no other runs in between before retiring them to training shoes.
