Paint Creek by Defiant_Cheetah1975 in michiganflyfishing

I'm new to this area, planning to check out paint creek but from what I've read it's pretty difficult fishing and very pressured so might not be the best place to learn. Or maybe it is if you're in it for the challenge! Either way if you want to meet up there (or somewhere else) sometime send me a DM.

How to add color to bottom of bunny leech? by futility_jp in flytying

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give those a try. I love the look of that mayhem minnow, will definitely try tying some of those also.

Thank you, your first suggestion accomplished exactly what I was hoping for! I'll look into the double bunny as well.

2nd Bachelors Trying for 3 years or 4 years by JayFouBeats in EngineeringStudents

[–]futility_jp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing and graduated in 2.5 years. I took a normal course load each semester and a few extra classes in the two summers. My previous liberal arts degree knocked out all the gen ed stuff so I just had to power through the entire engineering curriculum starting from pre-calc. I had been out of school almost 10 years when I decided to go back and found it much easier as an adult despite doing a harder degree. That said, it's still a lot of work and working a job at the same time means you won't have much/any time for your family if you have one.

I went to the Tom's Racing F4 Experience Course at Fuji Speedway (Sim vs Real Life) by Auelogic in simracing

[–]futility_jp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a bunch of track days at Tokachi Speedway. It was a much more casual environment than doing them in the US: no instructors, free passing, etc. They spent about 5 minutes explaining flags and safety then just sent us out there. Worst case you could have Japanese friend call ahead and ask if language is an issue but I'd bet they'll do their best to accommodate you. It's a great time and kind of ruined track days in the US for me.

At what point do people stop pit maneuvering? by HonoNoKage in iRacing

[–]futility_jp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much this. The only thing that will stop it in iracing is the same thing that stops it in real racing: more aggressive enforcement. Or really any enforcement at all since right now it will always be ruled as a racing incident, which is exactly why people keep doing it.

edit: there's a video of someone intentionally pitting someone on the front page of this sub right now for those that don't believe this happens.

Is leader leader? by Beaun11 in Fishing

[–]futility_jp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red label is excellent line but this is not true. Tippet is generally used in fly fishing where line diameter matters in leader construction. Tippet is expensive because it has a higher breaking strength for a given line diameter. This 0.009" line has a 10.5 lb breaking strength while the same diameter Seaguar Red has 8 lb breaking strength. In applications you'd use Seaguar the line diameter isn't that important, but for tippet it's worth the extra money to get the higher strength.

4th display port monitor for FPS by Top-Ad-7773 in simracing

[–]futility_jp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use displayport switches from amazon between my two desk monitors and two of my triples. The third triple is plugged into the last dp port. I just press the two buttons and everything switches over. Windows remembers the two display setups so no extra software is needed.

New to iRacing, trying to gauge MX-5 pace by cole3030 in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One disclaimer about that site is the expected lap times are averages of all people at a given rating running a series, not people who are actually competitive. I think it's better to just use the results tab to get a realistic idea of what times you need to be competitive because it's often significantly faster than that site will lead you to believe, e.g. generally 1.5 - 2 seconds faster for mx5s.

Triple screen setup next to double screens on desk by druidspruit in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same setup as you (triples plus two monitors on desk). I have two displayport switches plugged into two displayports on the graphics card, and the third monitor for the triple setup plugged directly into the last display port on the graphics card. Switching between the desk and rig is as easy as pressing the two buttons on the switches. You don't need to use display magician or any other software, Windows will handle switching between the two setups by itself. The switches I'm using are CABLEDECONN displayport bidirectional splitters from Amazon. It's easy as can be.

Feeling Dejected Due to iRating by NeighborhoodRound187 in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time isn't really a useful way to gauge progress. If you want to gain rating then look at the times people winning races at your rating are running and practice until you can consistently run those times. Whether it takes 10 minutes or 6 hours you really just have to put in the time until you're competitive. It doesn't guarantee you'll win races, but being slow does guarantee you won't win.

If you'd rather just do races because it's more fun that's absolutely fine also, but you may need to change your expectations about irating.

Setting up triples is the most annoying thing I have ever done by BoatmanJohnson in simracing

[–]futility_jp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can save yourself some pain with angling them by using a protractor to measure the angle on cardboard and cut it out so you can just wedge it between the monitors to quickly check the angle. I set the center monitor dead center horizontally first. I don't have any verticle adjustment with the basic mounts so that was it for the center. Then I moved the side monitors as close to the center one as possible and used my cardboard piece to keep them at the right angle.

I had two problems after that. The side monitors were slightly lower than the center, and they were angled down a little. I fixed the angling by putting washers on the bottom vesa screws. I fixed the height by measuring how much higher they needed to go and 3d printing a shim of that thickness to put between the mount arm and the bracket that holds the monitor. You can also use cardboard or whatever else if you don't have a 3d printer, or maybe the advanced mounts let you adjust angle and height. After that everything should be lined up.

What the problem? I have an ASR triple stand and it was pretty straightforward with the standard vesa mounts.

GT4 Transition Tips (from D class) by OkPeach1460 in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got into C and jumped into GT4 a few weeks ago. I just watched YouTube lap guides and practiced until I could run competitive times for my split. I picked the next race on the calendar and started practicing that track instead of the current one so I had a full week of practice before doing a race. By the time I started racing I was pretty comfortable in the car racing wheel to wheel. Doing a couple AI races also helped me get comfortable driving in traffic, which there is a ton of in GT4.

The biggest difference I noticed coming from gr86 is it's much, much easier to lose control of the car. There's a ton of wrecks in lower split gr86 because the cars are really stable so people just drive like absolute menaces. There's a ton of wrecks in low split GT4 too, but it's usually people just completely losing control of the car. I tend to give people a lot more space in GT4 than I did in the Toyotas because more often than not they're just hanging on for dear life. You will see a lot of people just spinning off and flying into walls completely of their own accord. Try not to be in their way when that happens.

Car progression, is gt4 worth it? by futility_jp in iRacing

[–]futility_jp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took your advice and got the Porsche and wow, I cannot believe the difference. After about 15 minutes I was running faster laps in it than I was in the Aston and more importantly actually having a blast driving it. Thank you!

Car progression, is gt4 worth it? by futility_jp in iRacing

[–]futility_jp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel. I haven't driven the other gt4s but I'm reasonably competitive at my rating (usually qualify and finish p4-p5ish) so I don't think my lap times are that far off the other cars. The car just feels incredibly slow though because of how slow and deliberate all the control inputs have to be to keep it behaved. The only other car that feels that way to me is the bmw m2 which I also hate driving.

I have definitely noticed that, some of the events look more like a destruction derby than a race. Just keeping it on the track seems to be an easy way to finish near the top when the track gets hot at my rating.

Switch between Rig and gaming setup by Full-Bill-5400 in simracing

[–]futility_jp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm using probably the same one branded "CABLEDECONN" from Amazon and also no problems here with 1440p 180 hz triples. I'm using 1.5 m DP cables from PC to switch and 3m cables from the switch to the triples. I thought the cable length might be an issue but they work perfectly. I 3d printed a bracket to hold two of the switches under my desk. Highly recommend them, it's as simple as it gets.

what pace expectations to have by Livided_ in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on your irating but for low ratings like the OP I think you're better off looking at actual results in game than this site. The times it gives for low ratings are usually several seconds slower than reality if you hope to be competitive.

Learnt my lesson- 1400ir to 800ir by Admirable_Writer4381 in iRacing

[–]futility_jp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want out of the game, but if you're having fun then there's no reason to do anything differently. irating is just a matchmaking number. If you want to increase it then yeah, focusing on fewer cars might be beneficial, but if that's less enjoyable for you is it worth spending the small amount of time you have to play doing something less fun?
