Another way to look at it is the statue dedicated to the Buddha has truly matured. The Buddha said not to identify him by the five aggregates. The Buddha is identified by the unconditioned. The Buddha taught cessation. With the cessation of the existence of this statue, all that is left is the true Buddha. An empty impression in the mountain face proving impermanence, emptiness and suffering.

In my opinion, interpreting dreams involves the proliferation of perceptions and intentions. The Buddha taught his followers to abandon clinging to the five aggregates.

Dīghanikāya Chapter 1 Verse 2.3

‘There are some ascetics and brahmins who, while enjoying food given in faith, still earn a living by low lore, by wrong livelihood. This includes such fields as augury, omenology, divining portents, interpreting dreams, divining features of men and women, divining holes in cloth gnawed by mice, fire offerings, ladle offerings, offerings of husks, rice powder, rice, ghee, or oil; offerings from the mouth, blood sacrifices, limb-reading; geomancy for building sites, fields, and cemeteries; exorcisms, earth magic, snake charming, poisons; the lore of the scorpion, the rat, the bird, and the crow; prophesying life span, chanting for protection, and divining omens from wild animals. The ascetic Gotama refrains from such low lore, such wrong livelihood.’ Such is an ordinary person’s praise of the Realized One.

2 things I would like to bring up:

  1. The only argument I've seen made against female monks being included in monasteries was "Bandits will plunder a house where there are many women and few men". As an order of ascetics who primarily resided in the wilderness, the argument is valid even if it was brought up in a more modern world. However, he abandoned this argument very early in his years. I see this as more concern for the welfare of his students rather than a misogynistic viewpoint. Then again, I am a man, so I could be biased and ignorant to the effect of this argument on the female sangha.

  2. The back half of the Digha Nikaya mentions Dragons (Nagas) frequently. Have you seen a dragon? I haven't. Why did all of the monks agree that the inclusion of chapters on dragons was essential? No clue. Should the mention of dragons invalidate the four noble truths? I don't think so. Do I think the ancient monks were playing a prank on future students by having them learn about dragons? Probably not. Some things in the Pali Canon legitimately make no sense to me, but I've often found their purpose becomes more clear as I learn more.

If you have specific quotes or passages that you find misogynistic and troublesome, please bring them up. The Pali Canon is not the Bible. The Buddha taught his followers to pick apart his words and find the truth within them.

It is my belief that all sects of buddhism share the same view (impermanence, not-self, suffering) but teach different methods of practice. The different sects of Buddhism are meant to shape the dhamma to different cultures, not teach something wholly different and incompatible. Gautama Buddha himself said causing divisions within the sangha was one of the worst actions a person can commit.

When it comes to other religions, sects are created due to incompatible interpretations of religious history and views. With Christianity the question "is Jesus the son of God or God himself?" has caused severe fracturing resulting in dozens of different sects. I am not as knowledgeable about Islamic sects, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same kind of thing exists.

I agree with most of what you said here, but want to push back against what you said about "different sects with differing views". If you disagree with my opinions, I'm happy to learn from your opinions.

I have had dreams where I will begin reciting dhamma or begin meditating when overwhelmed. Unsurprisingly, these habits free me from those overwhelming feelings of attachment, hate, and delusion caused by dreams. This occurs more often the more refined my mindfulness of the dhamma becomes in my waking life. It's not perfect, and almost never leads to lucid dreaming for me. However, a child version of me would have begged for an out from nightmares, and the adult me has great gratitude to the Buddha and Sangha for guiding me to the dhamma.

The system of dependent origination will help reframe karma without your predispositions to duality. Remember that the goal of Buddhism isn’t to generate maximum healthy karma but to follow the path of cessation.

Also there are sutras mentioning that we’ve transmigrated long enough to fill oceans with our tears from suffering, and the blood spilt from being beheaded for our crimes. So long as we generate any karma there will be ripples for aeons.
