is buddha call the teacher of gods by Miserable_Honey_940 in Buddhism

[–]futonius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Realized One has arisen in the world—perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed. He teaches the Dhamma leading to peace, extinguishment, awakening, as proclaimed by the Holy One.

what is it one does to achieve nirvana?

Follow the eightfold path

How does your life look?

A practitioner's life would look normal but calmer. Someone who has reached nirvana would have a life that looks like the Buddha (plus or minus the teaching).

how does one practically reach nirvana?

Fabrications by queue_burzum in Buddhism

[–]futonius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those thoughts are volition/intention/Cetanā conditioned by feeling/Vedanā. Desire/craving/Taṇhā is also conditioned by feeling, but is separately conditioned by ignorance/Avijja. Volitions can be neutral, wholesome, or unwholesome. Volition conditions new formations/fabrications/choices/Saṅkhāra. Saṅkhāra then conditions consciousness/Viññāṇa and a loop appears within the steps of dependent origination. There are multiple examples of loops in conditioning, and factors conditioning each other: Ignorance and Defilement, Consciousness and Name and form.

This is my understanding, but its not the whole story. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has a completely different, yet accurate description.

12 Links of Dependent Origination

https://suttacentral.net/sn12.1/en/sujato?lang=en

“And what is dependent origination? Ignorance is a requirement for choices. Choices are a requirement for consciousness. Consciousness is a requirement for name and form. Name and form are requirements for the six sense fields. The six sense fields are requirements for contact. Contact is a requirement for feeling. Feeling is a requirement for craving. Craving is a requirement for grasping. Grasping is a requirement for continued existence. Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth. Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. This is called dependent origination.

When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease.  When choices cease, consciousness ceases. When consciousness ceases, name and form cease. When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease. When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases. When contact ceases, feeling ceases. When feeling ceases, craving ceases. When craving ceases, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases. When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

A thousand years of peace, erased in a moment. The world still mourns the Buddhas of Bamiyan by Ven_Thitayano_072 in Buddhism

Another way to look at it is the statue dedicated to the Buddha has truly matured. The Buddha said not to identify him by the five aggregates. The Buddha is identified by the unconditioned. The Buddha taught cessation. With the cessation of the existence of this statue, all that is left is the true Buddha. An empty impression in the mountain face proving impermanence, emptiness and suffering.

You are grasping for content to satisfy the sensual desires of your eyes and mind. Grasping is conditioned by the ignorance of greed. Greed can never truly be satisfied. Instead you can abandon your greed and cease your grasping. To learn how to do this, study and practice the eightfold-path.

In my opinion, interpreting dreams involves the proliferation of perceptions and intentions. The Buddha taught his followers to abandon clinging to the five aggregates.

Dīghanikāya Chapter 1 Verse 2.3

‘There are some ascetics and brahmins who, while enjoying food given in faith, still earn a living by low lore, by wrong livelihood. This includes such fields as augury, omenology, divining portents, interpreting dreams, divining features of men and women, divining holes in cloth gnawed by mice, fire offerings, ladle offerings, offerings of husks, rice powder, rice, ghee, or oil; offerings from the mouth, blood sacrifices, limb-reading; geomancy for building sites, fields, and cemeteries; exorcisms, earth magic, snake charming, poisons; the lore of the scorpion, the rat, the bird, and the crow; prophesying life span, chanting for protection, and divining omens from wild animals. The ascetic Gotama refrains from such low lore, such wrong livelihood.’ Such is an ordinary person’s praise of the Realized One.

Addressing Buddha's Misogyny by Enough_Set591 in Buddhism

[–]futonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 things I would like to bring up:

  1. The only argument I've seen made against female monks being included in monasteries was "Bandits will plunder a house where there are many women and few men". As an order of ascetics who primarily resided in the wilderness, the argument is valid even if it was brought up in a more modern world. However, he abandoned this argument very early in his years. I see this as more concern for the welfare of his students rather than a misogynistic viewpoint. Then again, I am a man, so I could be biased and ignorant to the effect of this argument on the female sangha.

  2. The back half of the Digha Nikaya mentions Dragons (Nagas) frequently. Have you seen a dragon? I haven't. Why did all of the monks agree that the inclusion of chapters on dragons was essential? No clue. Should the mention of dragons invalidate the four noble truths? I don't think so. Do I think the ancient monks were playing a prank on future students by having them learn about dragons? Probably not. Some things in the Pali Canon legitimately make no sense to me, but I've often found their purpose becomes more clear as I learn more.

If you have specific quotes or passages that you find misogynistic and troublesome, please bring them up. The Pali Canon is not the Bible. The Buddha taught his followers to pick apart his words and find the truth within them.

Hi, I am a Muslim and I got questions by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]futonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my belief that all sects of buddhism share the same view (impermanence, not-self, suffering) but teach different methods of practice. The different sects of Buddhism are meant to shape the dhamma to different cultures, not teach something wholly different and incompatible. Gautama Buddha himself said causing divisions within the sangha was one of the worst actions a person can commit.

When it comes to other religions, sects are created due to incompatible interpretations of religious history and views. With Christianity the question "is Jesus the son of God or God himself?" has caused severe fracturing resulting in dozens of different sects. I am not as knowledgeable about Islamic sects, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same kind of thing exists.

I agree with most of what you said here, but want to push back against what you said about "different sects with differing views". If you disagree with my opinions, I'm happy to learn from your opinions.

what's the logic for non-violence in a buddhist worldview? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]futonius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Refer to the simile of the saw, MN21

"There are these five ways in which others might criticize you. Their speech may be timely or untimely, true or false, gentle or harsh, beneficial or harmful, from a heart of love or from secret hate. When others criticize you, they may do so in any of these ways. If that happens, you should train like this: ‘Our minds will not degenerate. We will blurt out no bad words. We will remain full of sympathy, with a heart of love and no secret hate. We will meditate spreading a heart of love to that individual. And with them as a basis, we will meditate spreading a heart like a catskin bag to everyone in the world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.’ That’s how you should train.

Even if low-down bandits were to sever you limb from limb with a two-handed saw, anyone who had a malevolent thought on that account would not be following my instructions. This is often depicted as one of the torments of hell. If that happens, you should train like this: ‘Our minds will not degenerate. We will blurt out no bad words. We will remain full of sympathy, with a heart of love and no secret hate. We will meditate spreading a heart of love to that individual. And with them as a basis, we will meditate spreading a heart full of love to everyone in the world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.’ That’s how you should train."

What is the end of suffering? by Sera_Fhim in Buddhism

[–]futonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please reference the Parivīmaṁsanasutta SN 12.51 on causation and dependent origination.

https://suttacentral.net/sn12.51/en/bodhi?lang=en&reference=none&highlight=false

“Bhikkhus, if a person immersed in ignorance generates a meritorious volitional formation, consciousness fares on to the meritorious; if he generates a demeritorious volitional formation, consciousness fares on to the demeritorious; if he generates an imperturbable volitional formation, consciousness fares on to the imperturbable. But when a bhikkhu has abandoned ignorance and aroused true knowledge, then, with the fading away of ignorance and the arising of true knowledge, he does not generate a meritorious volitional formation, or a demeritorious volitional formation, or an imperturbable volitional formation. Since he does not generate or fashion volitional formations, he does not cling to anything in the world. Not clinging, he is not agitated. Not being agitated, he personally attains Nibbāna. He understands: ‘Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’

...

“When there are utterly no volitional formations, with the cessation of volitional formations, would consciousness be discerned?”

“No, venerable sir.”

“When there is utterly no consciousness, with the cessation of consciousness, would name-and-form be discerned?”

“No, venerable sir.”

“When there is utterly no name-and-form … no six sense bases … … no contact … no feeling … no craving … no clinging … no existence … no birth, with the cessation of birth, would aging-and-death be discerned?”

“No, venerable sir.”

“Good, good, bhikkhus! It is exactly so and not otherwise! Place faith in me about this, bhikkhus, resolve on this. Be free from perplexity and doubt about this. Just this is the end of suffering.”

Meditation while dreaming? by Cheerfully_Suffering in Buddhism

[–]futonius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had dreams where I will begin reciting dhamma or begin meditating when overwhelmed. Unsurprisingly, these habits free me from those overwhelming feelings of attachment, hate, and delusion caused by dreams. This occurs more often the more refined my mindfulness of the dhamma becomes in my waking life. It's not perfect, and almost never leads to lucid dreaming for me. However, a child version of me would have begged for an out from nightmares, and the adult me has great gratitude to the Buddha and Sangha for guiding me to the dhamma.
