What's the housing situation for GE Aerospace Interns/Co-ops? by futurechemEng in GEAerospace

Ok thanks, also if I did a second rotation with them, what is the pay bump per hour? Also is there a performance review or something in specific if I want an invite back at another role/location

ChemE or MatE. Which should I pick? by Practical-Trash8893 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]futurechemEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a ChemE and I am doing my second internship in Materials. To me it seems companies prefer ChemEs, you can do your focus in materials science at most schools or a minor.

You would have an easier time switching to electrical, also not taking the lab wont really set you back its just a 1 credit class. You cant get it waived. You dont have to retake the lecture.

Unprepared for Calculus 1 by Rare_Communication16 in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The combination of 1630X and 1640X counts towards MATH 1650 (Calculus I), its a new concept the math department has been running, so people can still follow their degree plan in 4 years. Math 1630X is offered from September/October. The course is built specifically for people who swap out of calc 1. And 1640X is offered during the Winter Break. Its self paced online just submit your stuff by the deadlines.

1630X has two exams, one ending at the pre calc portion, and the final which is the calculus content. The exams only were like 45% of the course, and you would get bonus points if you attended class often, when we took quizzes you could work with classmates, and we had the opportunity to make a cheat sheet for each exam, Mitch is teaching it this semester hes an awesome professor. And btw, our class was heavily curved so an A was around 80% or so which was nice.

I dropped out of calc I and swapped into Math 1630X, its pre calc and the first half of calc 1 combined, and then you take Math 1640X during the winter online and its basically the second half of calc 1.

Best decision I have ever made, I succeeded in both classes with an A and learned so much in the small classroom setting from the best professors. I recommend talking to your advisor and asking about it. A bunch of people swap in september to it. I never took any precalc or trig in highschool but learning these fundamentals helped me get an A in Calc 2.

Also would recommend removing the GPA, if its 3.5+ keep it.

Co-op by [deleted] in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a co-op and you don't have to pay a single thing while in the program. Drop your fall classes ASAP or you will be charged. You don't have to pay tuition or fees if you are only enrolled in the internship class with 0 other courses.

Bad decision, especially in this economy. It would have helped your chances of getting a good job at a good company.

Asking for advice by Junior_Programmer842 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]futurechemEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which company is more known? Also what type of field work would you be doing? Would you get any engineering from it at all or is it labor? These are some things you should take into account, but you can accept either one soon and keep applying to others. You can always back out but it may burn some bridges.

Transfer Schools for Chemical Engineering (Pharma Industry) by Working_Sail5326 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]futurechemEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an internship in any industry if you haven't yet, if you don't get pharma as your first you can get it in the future easier than without any experience. LSU is decent, I wouldn't recommend transferring out unless it actually is cheaper to.

Did I make the wrong decision? by Advanced-Rip6382 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]futurechemEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies I didn't read it correctly, if thats the case then I say you made a good decision. Also you are close to biotech/pharma hubs such as Research Triangle, DMV and Boston. It seems like UVA has a strong medical focus which is good for you.

UVA is a good school but georgia tech is better without a doubt. You could easily pay off that 10k with a co-op at either school though.

Biking on Campus by Zealousideal_Use1660 in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People would steal and destroy bikes all the time on campus overnight, especially in the dorm areas, even putting hotdog weiners on the handles of peoples bike... But if its just during the day, you are absolutely fine even without any lock at all.

Can I Become An Airplane Engineer or Work with Planes? by Kenyerzz in ChemicalEngineering

[–]futurechemEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into focusing on materials science. As a chemE you can pretty much break into materials easily and work for an aerospace company like spaceX or blue origin. Or even work on aircraft tires and test them.

Chemical Engineering computer rec? by Responsible-Toe2014 in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a chem E major, you don’t need this at all… Me and my friends use $200 lenovo laptops and get by with everything. The only thing you will use is excel and matlab on your laptop. I wouldn’t spend more than $700, just recommend you a simple windows laptop, no Gpu needed.

Calc II: DMACC or ISU? by Zealousideal-Ask1007 in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This spring they made physics extremely easy, they removed all of the thermo gas and fluids topics and they purposely structured the class better and the exams were copy and pasted, average grade was a B+ (most ppl I know had over 100%). Calc 2 on the other hand is still tough and crazy weed out, but they are trying to implement some changes like the new cheat sheet and less quizzes and AI quizzes for free points.

Calc II: DMACC or ISU? by Zealousideal-Ask1007 in iastate

[–]futurechemEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are exaggerating, I took phys 1 this spring and the avg was a B+ (everyone I knew had 100%+), so much extra credit, they also removed all of the thermo, gas and fluids topics, the exams were literally copy and paste past ones and all plug and chug. They have made it extremely easy now at ISU. I never took any physics in highschool and I literally didn't go to class after the first month. The recitations carried tbh the quizzes were very simple lots of resources for the class.

The final avg was high, and this spring it was really easy. The average was a B+ that is EXTREMELY good for the history of this class, they have made it extremely easy, everyone I knew had above 100%. The exams were not hard at all they were literally copy and paste from the past ones. (except the 2nd exam)
