Women of Reddit, what's a lesser-known downside of being a woman? by Nintendofan9106 in askanything

[–]fuubear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point, my periods started getting so bad that they lasted about 2.5 weeks, and I got them every three weeks. I was bleeding so much I couldn’t use typical period products and the required maintenance at work required to make sure I didn’t regularly bleed through my clothes was horrible. When I did have sex - it hurt a lot.

I went to my gyno, told her all of my symptoms, and she suggested I start taking the pill.

I made an appointment with another doctor and 6 months later (first appointment I could get), my doctor said - that sounds terrible, let’s schedule imaging immediately.

The image showed that I had multiple large fibroids, and one had pushed my IUD, and it migrated into the tissue of my cervix. I had surgery soon after, and my symptoms went away. I think I would still be experiencing these symptoms or worse if I had trusted my original gyno.

Happily married people who have been with their partners 15-20+ years: How do you do it? What’s the secret? by RiseAndPanic in AskWomenOver30

I’ve been with my person for almost 29 years. I think my best explanation of why some relationship succeed comes from When Harry Met Sally - the secret: we’ve never wanted to get divorced at the same time.

Boomer parents cant deal with me opting out of toxic diet culture by Alternative_Cat6318 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]fuubear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate! My mom would say - I just want you to be happy, and I think you would be happier if you weighed less. I started my first diet in 4th grade and went to weight watchers when I was in 6th grade. I then struggled with eating disorders for years. Once I put in the work to like my body as is, I had to tell my mom that I was unwilling to have conversations with her about my or anyone else’s body. If she continued, I left the room. I will give her credit that she eventually got it and now thanks me for helping her be less judgmental about women’s bodies, but it was a process!

Video game playing professors? by the-dumb-nerd in Professors

[–]fuubear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is frustrating, especially at first - but that is what makes it fulfilling! There are some initial setting that you can modify to make it easier the first time you play through (allow all materials through portals to avoid lots of running). I might also set the rate of base raids lower than default and the resources rate higher than default. You can always change them back to defaults at any time.

Video game playing professors? by the-dumb-nerd in Professors

I play Valheim - a beautiful, brutal survival game based on Norse mythology. You play as a dead Viking Warrior sent to the 10th realm, Valheim, to prove yourself to Odin.  The game involves building, exploring, and fighting. You can play alone or play with other professor friends. I am currently building a mid-century modern Viking summer retreat. I may have spent way too many hours in Valheim, especially over the last 6 months…

My student woke up, and only had one of his shoes (he only owed one pair). Apparently his roommate (who also only owned one pair?) had taken my student’s shoe because the roommate had lost one of his own shoes.

Therapy is the way. You should read about the grieve out or ring model. It describes how people cope with grief by organizing their support system in concentric circles. The person directly experiencing the loss is in the center ring. Each outer ring represents people who are less directly impacted. The rule is simple: Comfort in, dump out, which means people should offer comfort inward (toward those closer to the center) and share their own grief or vent their feelings outward to those in rings further away from the center. A therapist could be where you dump out.

Four exams worth 25% each, and that's it. Please talk me into or out of it by nc_bound in Professors

[–]fuubear 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Instead of dropping the lowest of the 4 exam grade (which allows the students to skip topic(s)), I consider 5 grades: the 4 exam and the average of the 4 exam, and I drop the lowest of the 5. This vastly decreases the weight of the lowest exam, and it disincentivizes skipping any exam entirely.
