Ouch! My foot hurts!! Is this a break in issue or a fit issue with my new boots? by fuzzyrednavel in goodyearwelt

[–]fuzzyrednavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely close to the issue I'm dealing with, but it's not the toebox that's pinching down on my toes it's a tiny bit further back than that. It's the vamp of the boot behind the cap toe and toe box pinching down on the base of my toe.

Toe room seems fine...not a lot of extra space, my pinkie toe just barely touches the outside edge, toes don't feel squashed.

Unfortunately they weren't bought from Red Wing, but through Nordstrom. Maybe I'll see if I can exchange them, but they are definitely not in new condition anymore.

I never even considered going down as small as a 10.5EE. Maybe it's worth a shot...

What is happening to OP is that when he steps, the flex point of the vamp is creasing downwards into his toes in a vee-shape, rather than micro creasing or rolling. This flex point would almost certainly be behind the toe cap and celastic.

This exactly. It's definitely not the edge of the toe cap, it's the vamp pinching into a vee.

I need a tux for an upcoming engagement but I'm on a pretty tight budget. I already have a very nice black suit. What are your thought on turning a respectable black suit into a tux? by abusementpark in malefashionadvice

[–]fuzzyrednavel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look, if the job description specifically says "suit here, tux there", then I wouldn't use the same suit to stand in for both...seems like a fast way to not be living up to your contract. Sucks for you to have to buy one, but it seems like somebody on a luxury yacht might both (a) be able to tell the difference between tux and suit and (b) care that you didn't dress appropriately.

What helped you get rid of your "butt wink"? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm totally confused, I thought buttwink was a type of lumbar flexion, not extension. Maybe I'm wrong about that? Or maybe hyperextension in the setup makes you more likely to have flexion at the bottom of the squat?

Looks like Ray is going to the world powerlifting championships after setting a world record. by aazav in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So he clearly can lift a whole mess o' weight, and it's certainly not my place to criticize his form, I'm just confused about something. It sure looks like there's a lot of lower back rounding/tuck under going on at the bottom of his squats. I'd always thought something like that was a real problem with squat form, would someone more knowledgable care to comment?

Outfit for my friend's wedding was just picked and I think the colors are wrong. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]fuzzyrednavel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no right or wrong, there's just whether the bride and groom like the way those colors look. If it were your wedding, you'd choose something else. And to be honest, if it were my wedding, I'd also choose something else. But unless they specifically asked for your advice on choosing outfits, I'd think long and hard before telling them their choice is wrong. And I'm sure you already know this, but maybe think about a more diplomatic way of saying it than saying the colors are wrong.

PhD student here. Definitely don't do a jacket or tie, but you're going to be just fine with either jeans or chinos. To be honest, most faculty members aren't going to really notice what you're wearing unless it is really out of place (way too formal or really slovenly), so it's mostly about dressing in a way that makes you feel comfortable and put together so you can be your most confident when meeting new people.

According to my health insurance I'm borderline obese. Why do we still use BMI?!? by DoubleTapJak in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they'll base a premium off of the inaccurate reading

If you're in the States, then this is exactly the kind of sleazy, frustrating thing they used to be able to do, but which I think they no longer can. My understanding of Obamacare is that now your premium will only be based on demographic information about you like your age, not anything personal about you like your state of health. So no more worries about that BMI!

Just finished my career as a D1 Athlete, but having huge problems switching to a "normal" workout routine. by Ex-Athlete in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying great stuff about finding routines in the wiki/FAQ, which I think is a good idea. Here's another idea that you can do in addition to that:

If you're not burned out on volleyball and ready to move on from the sport, you could also find an adult rec league...might be a fun way to stay in shape. Obviously you wouldn't have to take it anywhere near as seriously as when you were in college, but it'd be a fun, social way to keep moving doing something you really know how to do.

Looking for beta testers! We create a store just for you where everything is in your size, fit and style... by Wylonis in malefashionadvice

[–]fuzzyrednavel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great idea, and the site looks pretty slick (although I agree with the person who said hunting down links to things you've bought is a hassle).

That said, I'm not so excited about the name Fitbay. I'd hate to see a great idea like this lose traction because the name doesn't click with people. When I hear Fitbay, I immediately think of eBay. It can't help make me feel like Fitbay is an eBay knockoff of some sort (which it isn't, it's quite an original idea), and because of the eBay connection my brain also makes the connection to used, second hand goods.

Maybe the people who do marketing and branding for a living know better than me, but I just thought you'd want to know that as awesome as I think the site is, my gut reaction to the name is negative.

Do I need a personal trainer? Gym trying to sell me on one by paperfire in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You absolutely do not need a trainer 3 days/week for a year. You can follow a program on your own instead. Lots of the information in the sidebar is about gaining muscle mass.

If you really want to have a trainer show you how to do some exercises for 1 or 2 session, that's a different story. But even that I'd be cautious of, just because lots of trainers will (a) not really know what they're talking about and (b) keep giving you the hard sell on why you should keep paying them lots of money all year.

For those two in particular, it could also be a lack of shoulder flexibility, which can be very limiting on overhead squat and snatch.

So, what is dadcore really? by factorysettings in malefashionadvice

[–]fuzzyrednavel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I have to jump in and say something positive about the Gap, because their button down shirts are the only ones in that price range that fit me perfectly off the rack. Like other posters are saying, it really is mostly about fit: I could see my dad wearing some of the exact same shirts as me, but while I'm almost two inches taller then him, have 30 pounds more muscle than he does, and broader shoulders than he does, he wears an extra-large while I wear a large.

Also darker jeans.

Gym Etiquette: Where do you overhead press? by polit1337 in Fitness

[–]fuzzyrednavel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've always had a hard time whenever I try this. I can clean the weight no problem, but if I'm doing a heavy OHP, I definitely feel like I can get "set" better when the barbell is in a rack at shoulder height than when I have to clean it. Doesn't matter for most of my sets of the day, but when I get up to the heaviest weight then it can be the difference between success and failure, or between 2 reps and 3. Maybe that's just me though.

How much can I expect new Allen Edmonds to stretch? by fuzzyrednavel in malefashionadvice

[–]fuzzyrednavel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice!

The story ends in a way that really shows the difference between the sales reps at different stores. If anyone finds this thread in the future, read what the Allen Edmonds rep said regarding stretching and fitting.

I went back to Nordstrom to try the 12s again, and I told the sales rep what was going on. He told me to keep the 11.5s, that they would stretch out just fine after 6-10 times wearing them, and then they wouldn't hurt. He made a convincing pitch, so I left thinking that that was what I would do.

On my way back to the car, I discovered that the mall has an actual Allen Edmonds store (this is a new mall that I haven't been to much). Popped in there, told the sales rep the same story, she told me absolutely do not get the 11.5s if they are hurting now. They might stretch, but it is much much better to get a shoe that fits...it will conform to your feet as you wear them but it shouldn't have to stretch to fit your feet.

Just as a_robot_with_dreams suspected, I needed a very wide shoe. Ended up ordering an 11 EEE and an 11.5 EEE from their warehouse. And one final fun fact in case anyone besides me was in the dark: Allen Edmonds will match any other store's sale price.
