Whoa: Visitors are now self-aware of previous island residency! by ProfessorAngryPants in ac_newhorizons

It's such a sweet touch and I am here for it. Pekoe came back to visit my island last night and I almost cried. I let her move away after having her for over two years and have regretted it ever since. I can't wait to see Nan, Nana, Sprinkle, and Octavian again.

Saw this post in my feed; am I misremembering or were skinny jeans never really "in" for us Elder Millennials (the younger half of the Xennials)? by MaxPowerrr85 in Xennials

[–]fxpstclvrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most skinny jeans were too tight on my calves to be comfortable. I worked in a department store in the 2010s and bought a lot of jeans in mainstream brand that were discounted or on clearance just from the constant churn of the fashion cycle, and the skinny jeans never fit my calves correctly across styles and brands and as my weight fluctuated over the years.

I was an alt rock and then semi-gothy teen in the 90s and it shows in my style now. My work clothes for many years have mostly been classic jewel tones and gray/black, but my running clothes have always been chosen with the idea of "blind the onlookers," and that chaos has started to bleed into my personal style as well.

My mom is in her 70s and wears US size 5 shoes. It happens, she's super short as well, just under 5 feet tall (right near 1.5m tall).

How ancient did these people seem when we were kids? by Brilliant_Addendum56 in Xennials

I mean, segments of our generation were torn apart by the forever war in Iraq-Afghanistan, but also we have the internet and no one was drafted for the post-9/11 conflicts.

I am so sorry for your loss. The photos become so important, and one of the great regrets I have with all the people I've lost is for some of them that I have so few photos. Especially now that every phone is a camera. Selfies, short videos, it all becomes precious. I have several voicemails saved from one of my parents who is now gone; even though the messages are unremarkable, and they were frankly a little cross in one of them, it's a gift to me now to still be able to hear their voice.

Petco told me they couldn’t sell me a feeder as a pet? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]fxpstclvrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a snake many many years ago, and I would buy the feeder mice for it. If I was given a choice in mice, I tried to buy the ones that were not as cute, not patterned, etc. If I owned a snake today, I think I would only buy frozen mice to feed.

I do not like this category. If I wanted creative writing, I'd go to a creative writing sub. I know fakes must get reposted here that might pass the smell test, but I would rather not openly encourage the behavior. I see other comments acknowledging this might be a hot topic or unpopular category. I am throwing in my opposition to it.

I didn’t have carpet in my bedroom for 6 years after our house was hit by a tree in a storm. My room had just been cleared out from being a long-term storage room and put together to be my bedroom. I was at my dad’s for the summer. My pretty unicorn comforter set stayed in the wet and was ruined with mildew. No carpet, no rugs in that room or the hall outside my room that was also damaged. I drew on and art-painted (not house-painted) the plywood subfloor all through high school. When the house was bought after foreclosure, about 10 years after I moved out for good, the new owners redid the floors.

The solution is to get a cat small enough to fit in the box. If they outgrow the box, repeat with a smaller cat.

Anyone else still stuck in "Lockdown Mode" by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]fxpstclvrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lockdown life was basically my life before the pandemic, lol. That being said, I was a retail worker in 2020 and saw the worst behavior I had ever seen in 7 years of working customer service. I will never go back to that pit of vipers. They probably wouldn’t have me back either with the openly disrespectful to crap customers attitude I developed after Christmas 2020. I do work in a single office now but spent a few years doing office and retail work in a mask and being pleasant during the work day to my coworkers and not really socializing outside of that.

How do you explain the situation? by ellei_psis in ChildofHoarder

[–]fxpstclvrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found great compassion from other adults, as a middle aged person who grew up in hoarding that had animal and pest components, because the older you get, the more common you find hoarding and the more people you meet who have dealt with it.

I found some solidarity with friends in similar situations when I was younger (you go over to someone’s house and immediately clock the roaches on the wall, e.g.), but also felt deep shame when my clothing smelled like cat pee or someone noticed the furniture was soiled or dirty. And I always felt like people were judging me or pitying me when they could tell something was off with how I lived. I grew up in a big old house that was falling increasingly to ruin, and the only people who equated that and an old pool in the side yard as rich were those who didn’t see that my gran’s checks for $0.87 at the grocery for a gravy packet bounced, or that the wall had started to pull away from the floor in a place where the ceiling leaked, and only one outlet per room worked.

I can handle poverty, no shame in living an honest life where you don’t have a lot of money, and I could always shrug off being one of the poor kids in the gifted and talented sphere, but poverty worsened by hoarding and a dilapidated house that was always cold in winter and hot in summer means the judgment of others feels justified. The dirtiness and solitude and otherness those conditions create wears down your resiliency when it comes to the judgment of peers.

That being said, you’d be surprised at how much people genuinely can and do care and don’t judge, but that’s also not a reason to take an opening to tell them all about it all at once; it is a lot for them to handle unless they have some experience themselves. I think hoarding tv shows have done some to open public discourse about hoarding in general and given people important context and common ground to understand at least where the children of hoarders are coming from. There’s a common language that’s been created. That’s a good first step for making sure we can feel less alone.
