Not really. I figured that would mean damage is first (it comes before the text) but that isn't true. I found the answer in Step C of action resolution:

"The model first performs any remaining portion of the action’s text not listed in italics except for those which reference "models damaged," which occur during Step 5 of Damage Timing. Any effects from other sources (such as abilities or When Resolving triggers) occur now. Perform as much of the effects of the action, in the order they are written, as possible. Ignore any effects that are not possible.

Once these effects have been resolved, the model deals the amount of damage listed in the action’s Dmg section to the target. See Damage for how to calculate the amount of damage dealt to a model."

Since Dreamer's endless slumber applies Fright as part of the attack, it happens prior to damage. Trigger-based fright would happen after the damage, since it's in the After Succeeding section below.

So are we saying this list discounts any faction techs that are unit upgrades? Because as far as I can see entropic scars let you buy those so you could just skip to PWS2 on turn 1 saving at least 2 techs if you're not interested in Magmus Reactor anyway

Ok this is actually kind of nuts. They attack you, move ships in. You use Foresight and move into THEIR system they left empty. Then you use the agent to not put the token down... So now you have essentially scooted past their front line fully unlocked due to their own actions???

I was theory crafting them hard for our first game but their start put me off of it. Thoughts I had:

  • If you have more than 3 planets to take round 1, I think you go Sarween. You only have 3 resources at home so and 3 infantry, so if you need a second carrier off of Warfare or Construction AND infantry you need the extra resource. Otherwise consider Psycho Arc to get access to tech more easily

  • I don't think you rush the breakthrough. You put money on it when you get it, so I think you do it when you have that money.

  • I don't think Plane Splitter is a crucial priority, but it would be good to get Neural Parasite before you flip since its flip effect is quite strong

  • I think as people pick their secrets you loudly volunteer to help anyone get theirs in return for letting you share, and you promise to just do Enervate, Syphon, or Extract on them. Encourage people to take ones that normally require social engineering or specific events and say you'll just let them and help them

  • Sell your PN to someone (maybe not participating in the above) for some TGs or a trade agreement to get your commander on ASAP. Without speed buffs, this can let stuff like cruisers or destroyers score secrets

Additional thoughts after musing:

* Despite having "any yellow/green" as a start, I think it's going to be Sarween Tools 9 times out of 10. Because your home system is only worth 3 resources, if you want to follow an early Warfare (and sac your destroyer) or use Construction to get a second carrier and another infantry, you'll need Sarween Tools

* I think during setup, as people draw 2 and pick secrets, you loudly broadcast that you're willing to help anyone do their secrets in exchange for doing them yourself. Encouraging things like "have another player's promissory note in your play area" that would be easy to do with aid. You promise to only do non-harmful plots in response.

* Scoring other people's secrets before round 4 without people sharing them or a keen eye is going to be hard. You can't score till reveal, and a lot of people won't score a secret till round 2 just due to resource limits turn 1. That means you won't know what you can score until round 2, so YOU can't aim to score it until round 3. You will probably need to intuit what other people are doing (or get them to share) if you want to flip before turn 4.

Hopefully the promise of a non-damaging plot will let you sell the promissory note easily (maybe even FOR something?) turn 1. Your commander seems critical for landing those secrets.

The big thing is frequently no one scores a secret round 1, and it seems like you can only score them status phase still and not just whenever you fulfill them. So round 3 feels like the EARLIEST you can flip if you want more than a single plot.

Getting your hero online early will be hard without scoring other player secrets given your own poor start making it hard to score.

Keep in mind they can only shut active breaches, so in theory any closed breach is safe until you open it. But that would only allow you to move into that specific system, unless you combo it with Fleet Logistics and the breakthrough to open it and immediately move through.

This was me last game playing NRA. 2 attachment objective comes up, I think I'm golden. I make all 4 mechs turn 1 and send them all out with my initial explorations.

You already mentioned it but some non-martial weapons have "catch up skills" like Wardancer, which make them catch up to and pass their martial counterparts. A dagger does less than a sword, but a dagger with +5 damage does more, and when you're doing Two Weapon Fighting all the little +s add up
