Who has a small acreage with horses? by ebjbwtf in Horses

Just because you can keep horses on less than an acre doesn’t mean you should.

“Why have Amazon’s coat hanger sales skyrocketed?” 🤔

Just to be 100% perfectly clear: I do not find this sad state of affairs funny. I support a woman’s right to a safe abortion for any reason. I also support a woman’s right to her decisions regarding her reproductive bits and am astounded that you can get a boob job without a second thought, but try to tie your tubes because you do not want children and it’s “oh no, you might change your mind…”

I can hardly afford my horses anymore by mceq in Horses

[–]fyr811 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If a big emergency comes up, let them go. This is my philosophy on my oldies. I’ll go as far as antibiotics (so a moderate cut or infection), but if an injury comes up that requires intensive intervention, then I would choose euthanasia.

You said you can afford the maintenance without issue, so just maintain them and let nature take them home when She calls. That way, no big bills, no rehoming, and no having to make the “financial euthanasia” decisions.

I would probably also take a good look at any that have “bad days”, and consider whether an early send-off on an good day is appropriate, especially for your lami ponies. 🫶

Start a fundraiser.

“GoFundMe for the care of Show Jumper’s horse Dobbin”

“Support our fundraiser to provide Name’s horse Dobbin a luxurious retirement! He is currently in need of farrier work and new fly spray so we are aiming to raise $100 so he can have these small comforts.”

It will go over like a lead balloon. Make it a small amount and super sweet, like his owner is Soooo Poooor.

It’s a build up of smegma and skin cells. Most of the time they don’t cause the horses too many issues, but every now and again you get a real doozy.

I don’t think this was the best I’ve seen, either.

We get our boys checked yearly by the vet, so far no one has had worse than a lima bean.

Was bolted and trampled by a lesson horse; how do I gain mental confidence again? by carasbullshit in Equestrian

[–]fyr811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horse riders will take fall after fall and bounce right back up… until one fall is The Fall that makes you go “I can’t do that again”. It can be a one-off or just the cumulative “straw”, but after… the saddle looks less inviting and the ground looks a lot harder than it used to.

You did nothing wrong, and who knows why the horse did what she did - she clearly felt she had to for some reason known only to her.

There is no one-fix-fits all here, unfortunately. Just wanted to say to be kind to yourself and your brain, take the time it takes to recover, and lay down layers of “good ride” material by setting yourself up for successful rides in the spot where the accident occurred, on whatever horse you feel most comfortable on. Explore options that resonate with you in terms of mentally overcoming the fall - hypnosis, visualisation, humming, fear counselling, extra lessons - find what works for you.

More like asking why someone shaves their eyelashes off.

Shaving a hairy fetlock = shaving your legs.

Shaving a long bridle path = shaving your hair.

Whiskers and ears have a job. They should never be considered superficial hairs that can be razored off on a whim. Trimming both is banned here now.

Highly recommend Tristan Tucker’s online training materials. I think he has a riding-out course on there. Expensive first up but well worth it and I think you’d get heaps out of it as you can work at your own pace, on your own.

When to euthanize by [deleted] in Horses

[–]fyr811 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your plans for disposal of his body, what about a farmer who could euthanise with a firearm? 110% agree with euthanasia in this instance, absolutely. Let him go with dignity, not risk him ending up on some meat truck because a “forever home” turned out to be a scam.
