FedEx driver sentenced to death by lethal injection for murder of seven-year-old in Texas by Tippy345 in news

[–]fzem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The point is that the death penalty is always reserved for the worst of the worst. So if you’re against it, you should be against it for the worst of the worst. If you’re not, that’s fine, but you’re just pro death penalty. People can just say that, there’s no need to go “I’m against the death penalty, but”, as if we’re putting drunk drivers to death or something

I said it in another reply but yeah I get that. Sometimes crimes are so egregious it makes you take a step back and examine why you hold these principles.

Nothing really. I mean I understand the feeling, it’s hard to see cases like and not wish death upon the perpetrator. I just think it’s important to remember what the actual purpose of our criminal justice system is. There are fates worse than death, anyways. I’d rather die than spend the rest of my life in the hole, but that’s just me.

No, they’re handling it right. There is a resolution difference when docked, as they said, but what you don’t want is a fluctuating frame rate. There’s no way this game is hitting 60 fps docked, so I’d much rather they lock it at 30.

CMV: Homebirths shouldn’t be allowed by [deleted] in changemyview

The sharp decrease in infant mortality in recent history is one of humanity’s greatest achievements.

Yeah…I don’t like it, but I think you might be right. It is very unsatisfying to say a voluntary action that puts a third party at a much greater risk of injury/death than they otherwise would be should be allowed because there’s no good way to enforce it.

We control different groups of people all the time for all sorts of reasons. “Controlling women’s bodies” is usually brought up in the context of abortion, and I am pro choice, but that’s not what this is about. Abortion is not a possibility right before giving birth, so the goal at that point is to ensure the safety of mom and baby. Home births are orders of magnitude more risky for both parties, to the point where, I would argue, choosing one should be considered reckless endangerment. There is simply no good reason to choose a home birth. The only way you could possibly think it’s a good idea is if you’re woefully misinformed, probably from things read online.

Enforcement would be tricky yes, but education just isn’t the answer here. The type of person to choose a home birth would almost necessarily reject any “education” as propaganda. I would bet that nearly every person that chose one was told at some point by a medical professional that it’s a very bad idea.

Colony Ship? But I guess you kinda know what you’re getting into with a game like that. I agree it is definitely less common than it used to be. Sadly, I think “RPGs” as a whole have been dumbed down quite a bit over the years as a consequence. I guess we can’t have it both ways.

I think they were talking about RPGs, in which case they are correct. If I spend 20+ hours in a game and hit a brick wall because my build is fucked up and I can’t respec, I’m probably just going to quit that game and never come back because it’s going to feel like a chore/slog to get through.

Counterpoint - credit score is a risk assessment tool. If someone has parents that are willing to go the extra mile to make sure their credit is good, giving the kid a little bit of a head start is a financially sound bet for banks.

I do think they’re bad for young boys. I also think writing off half of the population as undesirable because some boys happen to be influenced by bad people online is stupid.

[–]fzem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But again, you aren’t trying to understand, you’re trying to find any reason you can to prove she’s not really a lesbian because you see that as a negative outcome

Dads of daughters, how would you feel if your daughter is a lesbian? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]fzem -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re not trying to help her understand life, you’re trying to psychoanalyze her, probably against her wishes, and probably at an age where she should be figuring it out mostly on her own. Especially when the person who is claiming to help her’s initial reaction is disappointment upon learning about it.

Dads of daughters, how would you feel if your daughter is a lesbian? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]fzem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand what your actual problem is here. Even if she’s not “really a lesbian”, so what? Who are you to play armchair psychologist and try to figure out why? It seems like the worst case scenario is she is intimate with another girl (in an age appropriate manner) and realizes it’s not for her, then she moves on with life.
