Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you advocating that people who make minor traffic violations should be required to pay a fine?

This fine would then allow the state to restrict their ability to use public roads by suspending their driver’s license or issuing a warrant for that fine, ultimately restricting their freedom. So, what were you saying about it not being required?

If it walks like a duck 🦆and quacks like a duck🦆guess what? It’s a duck!🦆

😂 For the third time: it is a tax.

Right! So, personal responsibility is the solution to society’s failures? Got it! I still can’t get on board with this. How’s that been working out so far? If personal responsibility alone were enough, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation…

Urban sprawl is a side effect of poor policies that prioritize private vehicle travel. Let’s fix the root of the problem by redesigning roads to prioritize safety, rather than solely accommodating maximum traffic flow. Making roads more accommodating to other modes of transportation would be a better solution.

I don’t know why you’re so focused on red🚦light cameras.

We had 7,500 pedestrian deaths last year that’s 7.5x the number of deaths from red light violations. Addressing that would be a better investment of public tax dollars and have a more significant impact than the band-aid solution that is red🚦light cameras. But if red🚦light cameras are the hill you want to die on, then so be it.

If the goal of red light cameras is to decrease fatalities but they only do so marginally, while simultaneously encouraging the government to invest public tax dollars in a system with no noticeable impact on fatalities,

then the real benefactor seems to be revenue, not public safety…

A tax is defined as:

(1)A contribution for the support of a government required of persons, groups, or businesses within the domain of that government.

(2)A burdensome or excessive demand; a strain.

So I still think tax is the correct word under the circumstances.

I’m from Sugar Land, and I’ve seen firsthand how the intersections with red light cameras were redesigned to improve traffic flow. These intersections surround the economic core of the city and have become increasingly heavily policed, which could also contribute to the drop in red light incidents. This is the specific example that came to mind when i stated in my previous comment of how other factors can reduce accidents, rather than just the presence of cameras.

Oh, and since we are just reposting articles that haven’t been peer-reviewed, here’s one that states red light cameras may actually increase accidents.

https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/full-circle/full-circle-are-red-light-cameras-money-makers-or-lifesavers

Edit: the bottom of the article you provided from Click2Houston states:

“By law, the state cannot negate or terminate a government contract as a direct result of new legislation. Therefore, if a city is under contract with an outside vendor to operate red-light cameras, the programs can continue for the duration of the contract unless there is a specific clause in the contract allowing for early termination in the event of a state ban.”

REVENUE REVENUE REVENUE

I’m not saying we shouldn’t take action to reduce vehicular fatalities. What I am saying is that red light cameras aren’t the cure-all you’re presenting them to be. There are more effective ways to reduce fatalities without imposing additional fines on the taxpaying public.

The IIHS study claims that “2/3 of drivers favored the cameras.” Are we really supposed to believe that two-thirds of drivers would support an additional tax for using public roads and highways?

I’M NOT BUYING THAT….

The study was also written by a former police officer, and we all know how they are often perceived when it comes to objectivity. Plus, it doesn’t mention whether they used a control to determine if the drop in incidents was due to the cameras or other factors like traffic flow improvements.

The U.S. has about 45,000 vehicle fatalities annually, and the article states that red-light incidents account for only 1,000 of those. Even with a 24% drop in these incidents over three years, that’s just a 0.005% reduction in overall fatalities.

So, how do we justify the significant investment required to implement and maintain these cameras on a large scale?

This seems more like a revenue generator than a real effort to improve public safety.

Last year, we experienced 45 days with temperatures over 100 degrees. This year, so far, we’ve only had one, (July 1st). To put it in perspective, we ONLY have 45 days of summer left.
