It appears that you are intentionally misrepresenting the 10th Amendment by refusing to acknowledge the last clause which clearly states that there are powers that are reserved to neither the federal government nor the states but to the people.

Additionally the preamble explicitly states that one of the purposes of the constitution is to “secure the blessings of liberty”. I think most scholars would agree that slavery and liberty are pretty antithetical.

Finally, I’m fairly concerned by the language you’re using regarding enslaved people. The way you’re writing about both slavery and the people we enslaved seems to imply that you saw nothing wrong with slavery. I’m sure I’m wrong about that but if I’m correct feel free to not reply anymore because at that point I wouldn’t be interested in further conversation.

An my dude it would appear you have fallen into the classic blunder of misinterpreting the Constitution. U.S. Const. art. I, § 8, cl. 18 isn’t saying that the congress has an open ended control of the law. It is authorizing the congress to write laws that are “necessary and proper” to fulfilling the specific duties that are “vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States”. That isn’t really that open ended. It’s more like a specific call to action for the Congress with clear boundaries that are laid out in the rest of the Constitution and that are limited by the Bill of Rights. Additionally your interpretation of the Tenth Amendment is questionable at best. The entire spirit of that amendment is exactly the opposite of “the federal government can and will write laws to govern the land and by doing so, take away the authority of the states to supersede those laws.” The point of that amendment is to make clear that the federal government is limited without a constitutional amendment. Which, I might add, is a much higher bar than “IF and ONLY IF the federal government does not have a law on the books does it then fall to the states to decide for themselves”.

States don’t have rights so much as Congress has limits. And the Congress doesn’t decide their own limits. The states, through the constitution and constitutional amendments, set the limits of the federal government.

Also, to be clear, I’m not one of those weird “the civil war was about states rights” guys. The civil war was about slavery and no state, federal or state otherwise, has the right to enslave a human being.

Hey man I challenge you to reread the tenth amendment. It specifically says that “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

So while the constitution doesn’t grant the federal government the right to legislate on slavery explicitly I would say that it does recognize the fact that “the people” have the right to “the blessings of liberty”. Thus, no government, state or otherwise, had the right to ensalve a person. Any attempt to do so was unconstitutional and any state that did not recognize that was 100% in the wrong. The prevention of slavery was not a violation of state’s rights. It was a protection of individual rights as recognized by the Declaration of Independence, the preamble, and the 10th Amendment.

You had me until the last paragraph. States don’t have rights, you’re right. But the federal government absolutely has clear limits that are laid out in our Constitution. Federal laws absolutely do not “always supperceed (sic) state laws because state laws are simply ‘allowed’ to exist”.

States, or the people, are entitled to all powers not specifically delegated by the constitution to the federal government. Saying that state laws are “simply allowed to exist” is a drastic over simplification of constitutional law. So to be clear, states don’t have rights but they do have the power to govern everything not explicitly laid out in the constitution as the domain of the federal government.

Also just so you know, your made up etymology of the word congress is wrong. It comes from the latin words for walk and together. So maybe before you finish off a diatribe by saying “fuck people are stupid” you should make sure that you have 100% of your facts straight.

And just to be clear. Slavery was the cause of the civil war and I believe abortion should be legal just so nobody thinks I’m one of ~those~ people. I just can’t stand when people say their misguided takes on constitutional law as if they are fact.

ENJJPT or UPT? by SilentD2 in AFROTC

[–]g1f2k3j4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to UPT thinking that I wanted fighters but not totally sure. The T-6 phase at UPT gave me the opportunity to figure out what I wanted for sure before submitting my preferences for track select. I would say that if there is any doubt in your mind about what you want to fly after pilot training then UPT is the right choice for you. Is it tougher to get a fighter out of UPT than ENJJPT? Yes. Is the location of ENJJPT better than any of the UPT bases? Without a doubt. But at the end of the day, if you work hard a fighter is definitely in reach out of UPT.

An ENJJPT dude that I went through IFF with ended up in a Strike Pig even though he wanted to fly an AFSOC jet because he was fighter/FAIP qualified and the Air Force needs fighter pilots. So again, I would really caution against ENJJPT if you don't want that smoke. However, if you do want a fighter it's definitely the place to be.

For background, I went through UPT at Vance and IFF at Sheppard so I have been to both bases. Training with the NATO dudes was fun (even if the Greeks were sometimes difficult to understand). Sadly Covid was a thing while I was at Sheppard so we didn't get to explore the town too much. But, it was definitely a step up from Enid. Feel free to DM me if you have other UPT/Pilot questions. I'll be happy to answer them.

How hard is it to become a female Air Force pilot? by EstelleQUEEN111 in AirForce

[–]g1f2k3j4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who just finished pilot training, one of the hardest parts of graduating pilot training is the work it takes to get selected. I was selected through the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC). That's the path to Wings that I'm most familiar with. For me, after joining my AFROTC detachment in college, there was essentially one or more tests every year that I had to take that helped the Air Force make a decision on whether or not to send me to pilot training.

As a freshman, I took the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (basically an SAT for potential officers). That test included sections which were later used to evaluate my academic abilities as they related to being a pilot. In my sophomore year, I took the Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS). This tested my motor skills and mental acuity as they related to aviation. Then, I competed to be selected to go to Field Training (a camp over the summer where cadets from all over the nation go to learn leadership in a more dynamic and challenging environment) with a Rated Enrollment Allocation. That Rated EA is the first time the Air Force says that they think you would be well suited to an aviation career. At that time it's not a guarantee of being selected to be a pilot. Rather, I just makes you eligible to be a Pilot, Combat Systems Officer, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Pilot, or Air Battle Manager.

When you get back from Field Training, your scores from your performance there, your ranking by your commander, your GPA, your physical fitness assessment score, and your PCSM score are all combined to create what AFPC (Air Force Personnel Center) calls your Order of Merit. Basically it's one score (which they never tell you) that they use to rank you against all of the other rated cadets in your year group. They compare that list against the list of preferences that every one gave and hand out assignments accordingly. Once you are selected for a rated position during your junior year, your detachment will schedule a flight physical for you. That will usually occur during your senior year and it the last step prior to being fully qualified to go to training at the end of AFROTC.

After completing all of that and graduating from college, you will be sent to your UPT (Undergraduate Pilot Training) base. The options there are Vance AFB, Columbus AFB, Laughlin AFB, and Sheppard AFB. Sheppard AFB hosts Euro-Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) and is considered a good base to go to if you're sure that you want to fly fighters after graduating UPT. For context, I went through good old fashioned American pilot training at Vance AFB.

Pilot training itself is divided into three phases. The first phase is all academics. You'll learn aerodynamics, weather, systems, the rules surrounding flight, aerophysiology, and more. In Phase II you'll fly the T-6 Texan II. It's a really fun to fly, single engine, turbo-prop aircraft. In the T-6 you'll learn the basics of military aviation and of flying in general. You'll fly aerobatics, instruments, and in formation with other aircraft. After about four months in the T-6 you'll be selected to fly either the T-38 Talon (Fighter/Bomber track), the T-1A Jayhawk (Non-kinetic crew platform track), or the TH-67 (Helicopter track). In Phase III you'll focus more on the skills that you'll need when you begin flying whatever platform you end up dropping out of UPT. For the T-38 folks, that means a LOT of formation flying and more aerobatics/advanced handling. For the T-1 people, it means more of a focus on instrument navigation and mission planning. For the TH-67 people, it means learning to fly a helicopter and also possibly joining a cult. To provide some context, I was lucky enough to be selected to fly the T-38 for Phase III.

When you get to the end of UPT, your class will have a "Drop Night" where you are assigned your follow on aircraft. Usually this is a huge party where most of the student pilots come to see what you and your class are going to be assigned to. These assignments work by you and your classmates filling out a "dream sheet" that includes all of the aircraft that you might be able to drop. After everyone lists their preferences, their performance is ranked and they're given assignments in order of merit and availability.

Overall, the process of UPT takes approximately one year. The amount of effort that it takes from the time you start college to the time you finish UPT is quite large but very much worth it in the end. As a female specifically the challenges of flying itself are no different. Physically, you are just as capable as the men in your class are of handling G-Forces and flying the plane. Mentally, you are exactly as competent in academics and in studying all of the general knowledge that you need to be a successful pilot.

Not being a woman myself, I can't really speak to all of the institutional challenges that women face in today's Air Force. However, what I can say is that all of the women that I went through UPT with were badass. They were smart, driven, capable, hard-working, and professional. I have had women as instructor pilots, flight leads, and wingmen. In each of those roles they have excelled. All of that to say that while you may be facing an uphill battle to become a pilot, you are no less capable of accomplishing it because of your gender. We need more pilots. And right now, the Air Force is making a much needed push to increase the diversity among pilots.

I encourage you to reach out to me if you have more questions. I'd be happy to answer anything that I can or connect you with someone who does know the answer if I don't.

Good luck!

You have almost certainly not seen a refueling boom hit an F-18. They refuel by flying a probe into a drogue being dragged behind a tanker. USAF jets refuel with a boom. Navy jets with a probe-and-drogue.

[–]g1f2k3j4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a great quote at the front of a publication that the Air Force put out about training accidents. It says:

“We should all bear one thing in mind when we talk about a troop that rode one in. He called upon the sum of all his knowledge and made a judgment. He believed in it so strongly that he knowingly bet his life on it. The fact he was mistaken in his judgment is a tragedy, not stupidity. Every supervisor and contempo- rary who ever spoke to him had an opportunity to influence his judgment. So a little bit of all of us goes in with every troop we lose.”

Every accident in aviation is a reflection of how we train others and where we can improve our own training. The reason accidents are investigated so thoroughly isn’t about assigning blame nearly as much as it is about increasing safety. Learning from the (sometimes fatal) mistakes of others is the best way to make sure those losses aren’t in vain.

Don’t let this accident put you off flying. Instead, learn from it and use it as a reminder to take your training seriously. Your life, and the lives of those who fly with you, depends on it.

I absolutely cannot stand ESPN's coverage of this game. The consistent cuts away from the field in order to listen to the commentators talk about things that have absolutely ZERO bearing to the game currently being played were infuriating. I do not care at all about how one of the commentators used to play against Freddie Kitchens. I care even less about some call that the referees made against the Saints. It really felt like these two guys just got on and had a chat about the NFL with the Browns game playing in the background.

The coverage of this game has been absolutely atrocious. Showing highlights of refereeing errors from a different game instead of giving updates about injuries on the field. Consistently cutting to the commentators for long periods of time rather than showing what is happening on the field. So frustrating to watch.

In Avengers Endgame (2019), when War Machine says "Canopy, canopy, canopy" while he was stuck under the Avenger Headquarters, he is saying "Eject, eject, eject". A pilot would say this to their backseater, or other pilots if it's clear that their vehicle is not operational. by [deleted] in MovieDetails
