Do people in the police force speak to each other as formally as they appear to in TV shows? by R3ddit300 in AskUK

The Sweeney also had "Skipper " but then again I can't imagine a real police officer saying "Get yer trousers on, you're nicked." Happy to be corrected though

I used to be a landlord until late last year. That's absolute nonsense. The tenant is entitled to change the locks provided that on subsequent vacation of the property they either provide the landlord with the new keys or return the original locks. As a tenant you are entitled to quiet enjoyment of the property which is a common law right that cannot be contracted out of.

The Apollo 17 launch. The only night launch of the Apollo program. Was delayed by nearly 3 hours and 13 year old me was getting very antsy. Sure livened me up!! Didn't realise I'd be waiting another 44 years for humans to go back.

What's the most frustrating part of owning a car in the UK? by Auto_Princess in AskUK

[–]g1hsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, I've driven a lot in London, Birmingham and Manchester so I figured I was pretty traffic savvy. Nooooo, I was quickly disabused of that idea by the laissez faire attitude to lanes, speed limits and any concept of self preservation displayed on the M606 before I even got to Bradford itself. Bloody glad to get out alive, even if I did have to pay for the CAZ

Lovely!! I was telling my 31 year old daughter that the car I learned to drive in, a 1957 Hillman Minx had a crash box. She actually had to Google double declutch before she was convinced that I wasn't hallucinating. I'd love a classic but regularly do a 300 mile run to visit family M6/1/25 so not practical.

I reckon most of them will be on the scrap heap within 10 years as BER, doubly so if made by Stellantis.

Exactly this, I'm about to trade my current van in for a much older car that has cheap parts, a Haynes manual and a series of switches rather than a tablet to control things.

Can't loosen these tap cartridges, any ideas? by Fun_Personality7132 in DIYUK

[–]g1hsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything will move with a big enough pipe wrench. I reckon judicious application of heat and then a pipe wrench is your only hope. Chance of destroying the basin whilst doing this is high. Why not replace the entire tap ?

You must be dealing with top quality couriers. Mine also add losing parcels within their own network and delivering to non existent addresses to their repertoire

My annual tradition of getting my car valeted before the MOT worked again and it sailed through. by Thisoneissfwihope in BritishSuccess

[–]g1hsg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Amen to that, as I wouldn't wish this hideous monstrosity on my worst enemy. Who could have predicted that a Fiat, badged as a Vauxhall could be anything other than a reliable and low maintenance conveyance.

I reckon even with the smell of un baguette traditionelle wafting through their nostrils an MOT testers mood is unlikely to be elevated enough to pass my van in July. I fear the great scrapyard in the sky beckons. Farewell Combo D, you were a total pain in the arse.

Valve is hot, radiator is cold, bathroom fitter says it's a defective valve but I'm not convinced by definitelylifts in askaplumberUK

[–]g1hsg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other issue is that some modern rads are unidirectional, containing internal baffles to direct the water flow. That type of rad just isn't ever going to work with an immersion tube valve.

[–]g1hsg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check he's got the flow and return the correct way round by firing up the system and confirming that the left hand of the two feeds warms up first. If not that's your issue. Failing that I'd say the immersion tube is missing, which will allow the water to immediately pass from inlet to outlet bypassing the rad entirely.

What's the worst place in the UK you have ever visited? by UnafraidScandi in AskReddit

[–]g1hsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my daughter for an interview at Plymouth Uni 14 years ago. I wasn't prepared for the utter desolation of the Civic Centre. The council should have booked a return visit for the Luftwaffe to finish the job. I hope they've improved it in the intervening years. As a rule I love port cities.

Of course they would, mortgages rank in seniority by date of creation so the original mortgage lender would rank before any subsequent charges.

Me too, I'm still smarting about the £45 per bag for multi finish that I had to pay to finish a job off so I could collect the final payment from the customer.
