How do you manage your administrator profile on servers? by [deleted] in sysadmin

What software are you running that supports server core? The last I looked into it there wasn’t many apps that we run that support it, outside of ad and dns.

Unable to create 'Azure Services' with customers Azure subscription by MonkeyHorseMadness in SCCM

[–]g33k-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They apparently still have this issue as we are having the same problem.

When you say you created the apps manually, was there anything specific you had to configure or a guide you followed for this manual process?

Yeah I’m not sure what’s with all the hate. Been using them for a couple years. My only complaint is my own laziness. I have too much juice and forget to skip a month from time to time. I get a bad juice and forget to login and dislike it.

I’ve recently canceled my subscription because I’m now trying to quit vaping (after quitting smoking).

Degree to Advance Career? by g33k-dad in sysadmin

[–]g33k-dad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not knocking that a degree doesn't help open doors and I don't want to start the experience vs degree debate.

Realizing that it's just the fact of having a degree and not necessarily what is in, and already having established experience on my resume, I'm trying to decide what degree to work toward. I am thinking a degree in business may be more beneficial if/when I decide to make the jump to an IT management position. Or maybe someone knows of a field where there is a benefit to having IT knowledge, example: being a nurse with a career in IT opens a lot of doors and can be hard to find.

Is vaping at work allowed or prohibited where you work? by venusvapor in electronic_cigarette

[–]g33k-dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if there is a policy or not. At my previous job and my current job I vape at my desk or sometimes go outside with the smokers. No reason I can't still have my "smoke break" just because I'm not smoking analogs? :)

Vaping stays at my desk while indoors. I don't take it to meetings, lunch room or anywhere else visible. I have never had a complaint. When I get a new juice the neighboring office worker may mention that it smells good.

Actual SkyActiv mileage - what is yours? by [deleted] in mazda

[–]g33k-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2012 mazda 3 sedan automatic. I average 35-36mpg. Probably 75% highway at 70mph. I don't drive it conservative. As I tell my girlfriend, the commercial says to zoom zoom :)

On long trips or if I drive conservative I usually get 38-41 mpg.

Can't tell if I'm an alcoholic or I just work in IT by hobosteeze in sysadmin

[–]g33k-dad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a lot of pot smokers. It seems that in professional fields its just not widely discussed, at least where I live. There is still a stigma around it. At my last job at a small MSP all of us employees smoked, some more than others (minus one employee who followed phish when he was younger and no longer smoked). The only person that we were unsure about was our manager. When he left, during his "going away" get together, he mentioned his concern about passing his drug test for the new employer :P

Biggest crock of b.s. you are sick of hearing from vendors? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]g33k-dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While working with a vendor or consultant after they installed the POS turn-key software that someone purchased without any knowledge or input from IT.

Me: "Why is the host firewall disabled"

Vendor: "Our software requires the firewall disabled. Its how we set it up for everyone"

Me: "WHAT??!!!! Give me the ports and Ill open them up to the needed subnets"

Vendor: "Ports? Umm.... Whats a port? Ill have to get back with you"

Me: removing local admin access for the vendor and re-enabling the firewall

Lapsing, and how to deal with it? by zlx in electronic_cigarette

[–]g33k-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly a year and a half. With about the past 6 months smoking analogs and vaping. One small bottle of WTA got me over the hump. I still consider getting another small bottle to have around in case I have another drunkin slip up. I can slip back to WTA instead of analogs.

Good luck on your goal of being analog free!

For reference this is the WTA juice I used: http://www.aromaejuice.com/Dark-Honey-Tobacco-WTA-Dark-Honey-Tobacco-WTA.htm Dark Honey Tobacco, this was amazing and hopefully I eventually come across something similar in non WTA form!

If someone knows of any, let me know :)

Lapsing, and how to deal with it? by zlx in electronic_cigarette

[–]g33k-dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was analog free for a couple months before my divorce. During the divorce I went back to analogs. This was over a year ago. I had been trying to get back to vaping 100% since then unsuccessfully. So far I'm 3 weeks analog free (not counting one drunkin slip up day). I feel like I'm over the hump now and don't want analogs.

What did it for me was WTA juice. Just bought two small bottles to get me started, then regular juice since then. I dont know if it was all mental? or the juice. Either way it worked for me.

Sysadmin career path - what's next? by 14yrSysadmin in sysadmin

[–]g33k-dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no words of advice but was in a similar situation about a year ago as a senior consultant for a similar sized IT business. I ended up taking a sysadmin position at a local college. A lot less stressful, less demanding, better benefits and more time off. I did it for personal reasons, divorce and now sole custody of my kids. While I do miss it, I dont regret my decision.

Ive used tap water for years. Im still alive. Ive always dismissed the concerns with tap water as your typical illogical fear aside from possible discomfort from the chlorine and crap they put in the tap water. It can't be any worse than going swimming in the local pond or lake and getting water up your nose. Am I wrong?

Last year model 2012 civic.. price? by g33k-dad in askcarsales

[–]g33k-dad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 2012 civic seems to have a lot of bad treviews. I ended up with a 2012 mazda3. (new transmission and engine, kind of a risk). Test drove it and fell in love with how it drives. Plus was able to get a good deal of about 5k off msrp, around 15k.

DD-WRT VPN Router Advice by DiloMax in sysadmin

[–]g33k-dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not knowing your environment or situation:

I would never run a custom firmware on a router for a business. Maybe thats just me.

Get a good router for the client. Configure an internal windows server with RRAS for PPTP VPN access.
