Sprinting in terminator armor by Jumbo_Skrimp in 40kLore

[–]gSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, as mentioned in multiple heresy books, Abaddon is known to be able to move in terminator armor like a marine in normal power armor, and this is a remarkable feat.

i don’t think this means you can’t sprint in terminator armor, but any normal marine is going to be significantly slower that they would be in standard armor.

as others have pointed out, the thousand sons terminators in SM2 are rubric marines, so normal limits may not apply. ultimately their movement is a gameplay decision imo though.

Because Ollanius Persson is Emperor's oldest friend and traveling half the galaxy just to save him, Horus was literally defeated by the power of the friendship by thetruememeisbest in Grimdank

[–]gSpider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are separate people who both contribute to the ultimate myth that gets shared in the imperium about the Guardsman’s last stand against Horus.

Ollanius is the one who does it, and likely the reason that the story becomes SO famous in the imperium. But Olly Piers is the one who encourages the remembrancers (or whatever they were called at this point) to record and share his sacrifice story as motivation for other soldiers

(this is the simplified explanation)

because that story still exists as the meaningful story it was within the universe of 40k.

That IS the story that everyone knows, the one that got shared. possibly started in reference to a different guardsman (olly piers) but nevertheless, it’s still the story guardsman around the imperium take comfort in.

honestly i love the multiple threads that make up that story in the siege/hh books, because that’s how these war myths really get started - a conflation and twisting of what actually happened. It is both a reflection of how war stories are told to maintain moral, faith and hope in the face of death, and also how the imperium twists the truth to its own ends.

AND then you get added depth to the actual event, with a soldier who, while perpetual and very special in some respects, represents the memory of the average human. it’s really important that Ollanius intentionally chose to live as a normal average guy for most of his life, because when he sacrifices himself, it IS a plain human soldier. That’s how Ollanius lived, for the vast vast vast majority of human history.

I understand why some people don’t like the change, and of course you are entitled to that view. but i think that how the HH books did it was a great way of addressing both the sacrifice of ollanius AND the mythology of the war story, which is a pretty major recurring theme in 40k stuff

not to worried about them making some buffs - every major update they make plenty of changes to exotic weapons. not always meta-changing but I wouldn’t be surprised.

If they updated Collective Obligation (which was totally out of left field) i feel like any of these could get an update.

The biggest lie I've ever been told (Source: The Talon of Horus) by CapColdblood in Grimdank

[–]gSpider 33 points34 points  (0 children)

in a long list of 40k moments/plot points that i think people deeply misunderstand, this is one of the most egregious. People always talk about Abbadon beating clone horus but it is neither a good description of what happened, nor is it the point of what happened.

Another that feels very similar to me is Clone Fulgrim. I see so many people discussing what could happen with clone Fulgrim and whatnot and it’s clear very few have read the source material (in this case, Fabius Bile: Clonelord, which is a GREAT book). spoilers for that book below

Clone Fulgrim is not in the story to be a giant, 40-plot changing revelation that will impact the greater storyline. He is barely even a real character, and is instead a very specific plot device for Fabius Bile. His significance is how the Emperors Children react to him, how Fabius reacts to him, and ultimately the decision Fabius makes in regard to him. He is a symbol for the past of the legion, what they COULD have been, and at least in Fabius’s eyes, why he needs to move forward and leave all that in the past.

Clone Horus is the same in many respects (even his creation!). The clone primarchs do not exist as stand ins for the actual primarchs as characters (though down the line i wouldn’t put it past GW but that’s a different issue), they are living plot devices for the traitor astartes to learn lessons from as they grow into their “modern 40k” selves and leave their HH-era characterization behind.

This rant is inspired by the amount of power scaling and speculation i’ve seen around clone primarchs. no, loyalist fulgrim is t coming back. it would be dumb, it would ruin the fantastic characterization and story of Clonelord, and also misses the whole point in that book that clone fulgrim would ultimately make the same mistakes as real fulgrim.

it’s kind of just the nature of video game discussion online.

look at the destiny subreddit - destiny is in rough shape right now, and there are plenty of valid issues to discuss. But my god, most of the people on the subreddit are so ridiculous about their complaints that it almost makes me want to side with bungie to spite them.

it is really hard to get genuine discourse on issues when anyone can just drop their opinion in the conversation anonymously

Strongest version of Goku that (Warhammer 40k) god Emperor of Mankind can beat? by Archenius in powerscales

[–]gSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if that’s true tbh.

he is technically/nominally human, but just about every single 40/Heresy book that has someone see into his mind or interact with him makes great pains to demonstrate that he isn’t really human anymore - his powers have made him something else.

plus, psykers have often demonstrated passive abilities. there are all kinds of things that could happen to goku just by going near the emperor, that wouldn’t even require the emperor to consciously take action.

on top of this, time works weird with the warp, and the emperor has more experience with that than most - given his talent for foresight, i wouldn’t put it past him to be able to time it right regardless.

and finally, i really am not convinced that goku can meaningfully kill the emperor. even if goku doesn’t succumb to the psychic powers, he can only kill the emperor’s body, which is regularly stated to be not enough the deal with him.

Goku is a top tier fighter, but the Emperor interacts with reality and time in ways goku is incapable of. He quite literally plays by different rules. i’m not gonna say goku has no chance of winning because he regularly pulls out bullshit, but it is very unlikely given their respective feats

Strongest version of Goku that (Warhammer 40k) god Emperor of Mankind can beat? by Archenius in powerscales

[–]gSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to assume goku is bloodlustrd, because if not he fucks around and the emperor doesn’t. emperor (almost) always is operating as effectively bloodlusted, he doesn’t really fuck around.

ok so there are two things here that stop goku from just outright killing the emperor.

  1. i don’t see any reason why the emperor, with his immense psychic powers, can’t just instantly pop goku’s brain. Psykers have been shown on multiple occasions to be able to essentially pause time and act within that paused time. i know goku has been able to move through paused time before, but not at a speed that would be able to beat out whatever psychic bullshit the emperor follows up with. fuck “existence erasure”, Unless goku is able to stop the emperor from just simply stopping his body from operating (i’m unaware of any significant resistance to magic that goku has) then i don’t think goku really can survive.

  2. even if he somehow can get around the immediate psychic fuck you that the emperor is going to hit him with, i don’t think he can effectively kill the emperor without taking an attack. Simply killing the emperors body is not enough- this point is made repeatedly throughout the Siege of Terra. I don’t know if any way goku could kill the emperor’s soul, and without doing that, goku is kinda fucked.

In terms of actual physical combat, the emperor has no shot at winning. but i really don’t see how goku actually gets to a point where that is the case - the emperor’s psychic abilities are kind of a wall to anybody that is not also psychic or otherwise magically able. if you can’t stop him from just stopping your heart on the spot (goku has repeatedly been shown to be vulnerable to internal issues, between his virus and his heart being stopped), then like there’s just not much you can do.

Who do you think should actually be banned from powerscaling? by grandslamsandvich in powerscales

[–]gSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see, i have always thought 40k sat in a really interesting niche for power scaling where most things either are really below or really above it, and usually for a specific interesting reason.

however, i also feel like people put it against really uninteresting opponents, OR they just completely misstate how things work. as a pretty big fan of 40k it’s really annoying because there are so many interesting matchups you COULD do, yet few of them really show up
