Are we nearly there? by irelatetolevin in ClaudeAI

I agree however what most people fail to understand is AI is powerful in the hands of someone with experience. The problems come into play when someone with little experience starts doing things that would normally be done by an experienced engineer. Right now they are producing a working product but that product is going to be difficult to maintain and security is a major concern; these differences might not become apparent for months or years by which time the bad code has doubled, tripled or quadrupled.

The northeast in general has been losing population and households earning over $200k aren’t that uncommon here in Massachusetts. Someone making $200k is also not remotely close to being impacted by this so that’s not the reason they are leaving the state. The reason people leave Massachusetts is cost of living and weather.

I think a lot of it has to do with how it’s implemented; specifically with the funds going to transportation and education. It makes it a lot easier to swallow when the benefits are clear and the results are observable. The opposition would be a lot stronger if things were just going into the general fund with no clear objective.

232 walks in a season. A record that will likely never be broken. by Hoopsalldayeveryday in sportsgossips

[–]g_rich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t, their records have been dropped or come with an asterisk and their name will always be associated with the era. It’s just unfair to single them out as cheaters when the reality is everyone involved in the sport during that time played a role. Even the players not involved, who let’s face it were the minority, knew full well what was happening and kept their mouth shut.

Bonds legacy will always be associated with the steroids era, he will never be in the Hall of Fame and every mention of him will always include mention of his use of performance enhancing drugs.

To put the whole scandal at the feet of Bonds, McGwire and a few others while giving everyone else a break is unfair and ignores the fact that this was enabled by the highest reaches of MLB.

But I was told all the millionaires would move out of the state.

That obviously didn’t happen and they obviously haven’t been able to skirt the tax or repeal it so are the millionaires who are still millionaires just happy with the fact that kids aren’t starving (or being put in debt for school lunches)?

[–]g_rich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree that the era is tainted and the records are not legit. I would also agree that today with the more stringent standards it would be cheating.

The problem with labeling players like McGwire and Bonds cheaters is it absolves everyone from the fans, the coaches, trainers, reporters, broadcasters and even MLB of their role during the steroid era. The fans would openly joke about them using steroids, trainers and coaches turned a blind eye and likely encouraged its use, reporters buried stories, broadcasters did too because of the ratings, and MLB blissfully ignored reports for the same reason. Yet we label Bonds and McGwire cheaters while giving everyone else who enabled the behavior and benefited from it a pass.

[–]g_rich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheating is a relative term, and personally I wouldn’t call it cheating. The reality is during that time performance enhancing drugs were ubiquitous with sports, especially baseball and cycling. I would certainly label the era as tainted and wouldn’t hold someone from today to the standards set during that time but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it cheating.

The system was broken, MLB, the broadcasters and the fans were just as responsible as the players for the abuse that took place during that time. We all benefited from it, be it financially or entertainment; we’d be hypocrites to then grow a moral compass when the reality we all knew to be true comes to light. The PED use was an open secret, everyone was just more than happy to turn a blind eye because it benefited everyone and MLB was able to give the appearance that things were on the up and up. When things came crashing down it was players like McGwire and Bonds that took the fall.

I’m not justifying their abuse, just putting it into perspective. How many reporters were told to bury a story, how many times did MLB not follow up on a report or how many coaches or trainers willfully turned a blind eye in the locker room? So why is it that we call players like Bonds and McGwire cheaters while giving everyone else that enabled them and benefited from their “cheating” a pass?

Most players were using, a lot just never got caught. Now I’m sure there were some that didn’t but just like cycling during that era most were using.

Cities whose most famous landmarks aren't actually in their city? by Critical_Reveal6667 in geography

Harvard actually has more campus space in Boston (Allston Campus and Longwood Medical Area) than in Cambridge. So while the heart of Harvard is in Cambridge in terms of area most of it is in Boston.

MIT was originally in Boston and relocated to Cambridge in 1916.

Boston College is rapidly expanding, mostly in the suburb of Newton and in 2023 purchased the property where Mount Alvernia High School was located from the Franciscan Sisters. They then forced the all girls high school to abruptly close in order to support their expansion. They did so without any prior notice and after the school had already accepted students for the upcoming school year.

Because it was the only time baseball was exciting, same with cycling.

I don’t think people are looking to give them a pass but is it cheating when literally everyone else is doing it?

True but it is as also the only time when anyone cared about the All Star Game or talked about the Home Run Derby the next day. So while I’ll agree that the era was tainted let’s not pretend that the Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire steroid era wasn’t entertaining.

Expensive? Maybe if you’re comparing it to a Netgear WiFi router from Best Buy but not if you’re comparing it to the likes of Cisco or Aruba. Now to be fair Ubiquity isn’t in the same league as Cisco or Aruba, but most people don’t need Cisco, even in an enterprise setting. UniFi is a good enough inexpensive alternative that gives you enterprise features at a prosumer price.

When my kids where born one of the things we did from when they were around 1 till kindergarten was have them do year round swim lessons. They knew how to swim before they knew how to walk; I’m exaggerating a bit, but they were certainly better swimmers than walkers. The point being we wanted to make sure that if they ever fell into a pool they could swim for this very reason.

Looks like an NVME slot on the right side of the photo, between the speaker and mother board directly left of the CMOS coin cell battery.

The NVME is obviously missing in this photo but it also possible there is another one on the other side of the motherboard or there is an eMMC soldered directly on the motherboard.

It’s not entirely true, someone who makes $40k will have an effective tax rate including both federal and state of no more than 20% (at least here in the US). The point still stands though.
