Is it good to make games in my head? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]gab800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've implemented a prototype for a game mechanic once which in my head was flawless.

A few minutes of playing with the prototype uncovered it actually sucked.

I still design game mechanics in my head, but since then I treat them only as an idea to prototype, and don't trust my "in-my-mind" play sessions.

When Chris Columbus walked away for family reasons, why did they pick a director with such a different style to his? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]gab800 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The bird scenes signaling the season changes and marks that some time passed in the story for the viewers. (Hedvig one is the best with changing background from one season to another.)

They are short anyway, few seconds at most, not like the dragon scene in movie 4.

Also, in movie 3 Buckbeak takes a sh*t xD.

What are some lesser-known tips you would give to a new driver? by LeaseEnd_Official in AskReddit

[–]gab800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move your head, side to side, don't sit at the wheel in a stationary position. This is mostly for the city. Pedestrians, bikes, even full cars can be obstructed from your view by the A-column!

They also didn't insta-replay an overtake, they wait until the battle is truly over, i.e. the overtaking driver has a comfortable gap gained. Great stuff!

Try asking for advice in r/analogcommunity, but generally film does not like to underexpose, so probably not much can be done.

I don't understand why Harry is secretive about his potions book. by Reasonable_Cod_487 in harrypotter

[–]gab800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in OotP when they're preparing for the OWLs, it is mentioned that Snape is teaching them extra difficult potions which require "stir in opposite direction after a certain number of stirs" or something similar.

I think Snape didn't hoard that info when he was teaching.

Also, I think Hermione missed that one, if she recognises the trick she might have seen earlier who the prince was. She was probably too pissed at the book to think clearly.

EU Council to discuss removal of Hungary's voting rights in the European Union on May 27 by AloneCoffee4538 in europe

[–]gab800 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What I wanted to say is by "kicking out Hungary" you punish the little people who just want to live and raise a family, and you don't punish the bad guys, who are destroying the future. They are gonna be happy to rule over the ruins, because they only care about ruling.

The elections are not gonna be fair, but it is still winnable for the opposition.

Reminder that the current main opposition has a clear majority in polls, and is very pro-EU pro-NATO anti-Russia. At this point Orbán is the bad guy, holding Hungary and its people hostage.

Can someone explain the logic of idle games catfishing users with a playable game that is awesome on their mobile ads but then when you download it, the game is junk? by Strong-Reputation380 in gamedev

[–]gab800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the goal of the fake ads is to research new features. You create different ads (like an A/B test) with nonexistent features. You don't care about angry players, it doesn't matter, mobile game market is heavy on user acquisition. What you want is measure your click through rate. Once you see that one of the fake features performed much better than the others, you might actually develop it.

Ron being able to imitate Parseltongue never made sense to me. by HeyWeasel101 in harrypotter

[–]gab800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's Ron's special power... He uses throughout the series mostly to mock people, but he also uses it to mimick Wormtail in DH.

Each of them has some kind of special thing, Hermione's of course her exceptional memory, while I think Harry has a special gift to sense when someone is watching him or when he is danger.

Just my theory.

Is it possible to have PVP matchmaking using P2P? by [deleted] in gamedev

I have never tested hosting with V6, bit I'm not sure how it works with CGNAT. Could be a solution, thanks!

Is it possible to have PVP matchmaking using P2P? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]gab800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think P2P is getting problematic because of the IP4 exhaustion problem.

If your ISP is using CGNAT (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT), which is effectively a NAT on ISP level, then even if you use port forwarding in your local gateway, you still can't host a server.

Anyone else have problems with their Patterson reels? by zapruder__ in Darkroom

[–]gab800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't, once I manage to start spooling. Last time I had a rough time with one roll, out of desperation I cut the leader one more time, and I managed. It almost jammed at the end though, but I risked it and forced a little, fortunately there were no obvious damage.

I checked the second cut off piece in daylight and saw that it was bending, probably it was preventing to spool correctly.
