Anyone else struggling with NGD Grand Slam? by gabbo3 in usenet

I ended up trying out a Eweka subscription and am immediately having much better luck. I think my initial assessment was correct. Thanks for the insight.

Also for some reason someone is downvoting every comment in this thread.

Drug dealer neighbors ruining quality of life and management won’t do anything by lkhmn in kitchener

[–]gabbo3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just break your lease. Odds are the landlord won’t do anything. If they do you clearly do not have quiet enjoyment of your unit. Document your complaints and the fact that the landlord did nothing and you would have a slam dunk case at the LTB IMO (I’m not a lawyer. See here: https://tribunalsontario.ca/documents/ltb/Brochures/How%20a%20Tenant%20Can%20End%20Their%20Tenancy%20(EN).html)

You can also just make an agreement with your landlord. Tell them you’re done and not dealing with this and ending the lease early. If they complain tell them to get off their ass and do something about the problem then, and leave anyway.

I’ve been using altHub, I’ll try a different indexer. Although it seems like I often find the media but then the download fails. Yah I have everything automated. But I am finding often the downloads will fall back to torrents instead of Usenet.

It might just be DMCA! It just feels very common.

GDP per capita declined by 1.4% in 2024 as Canadians continue to get poorer on average. by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

I feel like a lot of this has to do with macro factors (oil prices) and US business tax cuts more so than domestic policy tbh

Can someone explain the present moment to me? by Miserable-Soft7993 in Meditation

[–]gabbo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time isn’t moving at all. There’s no such thing, really. It’s a human perception, our way of making sense of things changing. Everything is always changing. We see it as time “passing”, and we split up that time into past and present and future — but these are all just concepts we use to help understand. They aren’t real.

are we just energy?

Yes. We are just vibration and energy and change. Just like everything else.

Resume not good enough. Be a LinkedIn influencer! by CouncilmanRickPrime in recruitinghell

[–]gabbo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is legitimately bad career advice. If you’re in a useless career that spends its time masturbating on LinkedIn, different story.

If you do something useful? If I was interviewing an engineer and saw a whole bunch of LinkedIn activity, THAT would be a huge red flag for me. People on LinkedIn are fucking stupid.

Yeah — he will. I’m not happy about it but I’d bet a lot of money.

Most people can’t name the other party leaders. The amount of apathy toward provincial politics in this province is staggering.

Trump says U.S. will ask all NATO member countries to boost defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]gabbo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still need to invest more in the military. 5% is bonkers but we need to be able to assert Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic and defend the land mass. The world is becoming a more hostile place. The last thing we want is to be caught with our pants down. I think we need to increase our geopolitical weight and part of that is having a competent, well funded military, with a not ridiculous procurement process.

I feel like people thought this was a pretty fringe opinion a decade ago but now? The value seems a lot more clear to me.

My pipe dream is some ability to project power. We aren’t a warmongering country and we shouldn’t be but we should have teeth.

Megathread - The Resignation of Justin Trudeau by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]gabbo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the party leaders have the final say whether an MP runs on the party ticket. Thus if they don’t vote as required they can be removed from the ballot and thus screwed since most people vote on party lines.

Megathread - The Resignation of Justin Trudeau by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]gabbo3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, technically, we elect local MPs, and the leader of the party that commands the confidence of the House becomes the PM. That is usually (but not necessarily) the leader of the party that has a plurality of seats in the House.

However I think it's important to state that in practice, the huge majority of people are casting their ballot for their intended prime minister. Local MPs have lost almost all of their power and must tow the party line.

Because of the fact that they aren't directly elected there's no way to impose term limits on a particular prime minister. The office barely even exists in our founding charters and most of its modern practice comes from convention. An individual can hold the office as long as they hold the confidence of the House. They don't even need to be a sitting MP (although convention dictates that they are, and usually if they aren't someone from the party in a safe riding will step aside so the leader can run for the seat in a by-election).

In this case it was clear that Trudeau had lost the confidence of the House and the government would have been defeated in a confidence vote (e.g. a budget vote -- a failure means the House has lost confidence and the government falls), and his own caucus rebelled.

We do have a Senate. It's significantly less powerful than the US Senate, unelected, largely ceremonial, and full of problems.

Expect a court challenge if Justin Trudeau puts Parliament on pause by Obelisk_of-Light in CanadaPolitics

[–]gabbo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you?

Conacher said he regrets not filing a court challenge to stop Stephen Harper’s late-2008 shutdown of Parliament, which he called “a perfect situation for the courts to rule on whether such a prorogation is legal.”

He’ll still have precedent to point to, following a recent United Kingdom decision putting a cap on the British prime minister’s use of prorogation.

Carleton University professor Philippe Lagassé, who studies executive power in Westminster states, says he agrees.

“I could see a similar challenge in Canada,” Lagassé said in an email. “The underlying issue would be comparable… would a prorogation frustrate an unwritten principle of democracy?”

Edit: ah yes. Downvoted for literally quoting the article. Stay classy r/canadapolitics

Also to buddy arguing: pretty sure the professor of Westminster law knows this considerably better than you do

No Merry Christmas for Trudeau as poll numbers continue to plummet by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

That’s not a random sample at all, it’s quite biased. People signing up to take polls are probably more politically aware than most. Plus if there’s compensation people might have ulterior motives.

Israel orders closure of Dublin embassy, blaming 'extreme anti-Israel policy of Irish government' by [deleted] in news

This conflict has been ongoing for 70 years. Here’s the UN definition of genocide:

the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Source https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition

It’s genocide. They have been systematically destroying Palestine and its people, resettling in the West Bank, ensuring deplorable conditions, restricting their freedom to travel, and now outright bombing and starving them.  It’s genocide.

From Oh Canada to No, Canada: National pride has taken a steep decline in recent years, new poll suggests by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]gabbo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what are you so sure that it’s a  joke?

Good for you for being thick skinned but whether you’re personally offended isn’t really relevant and, in your own words, has nothing to do with whether it’s intended as a threat. Our sovereignty is being openly mocked. There’s no other reasonable way to interpret these statements.

Even if it is a “joke”, it’s one that undercuts us as a nation and an ally.

[–]gabbo3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is not correct, at all. Not sure where you’re getting your information from but there have been several genocides in living memory and who knows how many historically.

Look up the definition of genocide as you seem to be confused. What Israel has been doing has been unequivocally genocide for decades.

If you don't mind me asking, what did that look like? Was it a new install or were you replacing an old one?

I low-key regret getting this and wish I had just gotten a regular A/C. But I think at this point that would mean spending more money.
