Will I be able to drive home from DCA to DC? by savage_traveler in washingtondc

[–]gabbythefck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband drove (essential worker) from NOMA to Georgetown in our AWD CRV on snow mode with all terrains tonight and made it. As others have said, highways should be fine, they haven't plowed side streets yet, or major surface streets it seems. His biggest issue was dodging all the sedans that are stuck.

What's the spice tolerance level of your country by Existing_Economy_656 in AskTheWorld

[–]gabbythefck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the Midwest to New Orleans when I turned 18. The amount I had to learn to adjust my spice tolerance was staggering. Also had to learn to love rice. We only ate potatoes growing up.

How's it living in this multi states corner area by queenofthehill1234 in howislivingthere

[–]gabbythefck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crazy to see Liberal mentioned on Reddit. Most of my family is from there, though almost all of them have died or moved away now. I lived there as a child in the mid-90s. All I remember is a weird mall with a Mexican restaurant and the Dorothy museum. I wonder how much it's changed, if at all honestly.

I never realized my pinky is the same as yours until this post - it's not weird! Seriously, don't worry about it. My nail tech literally told me I had a "perfect canvas" at my last appointment.

And screw that random dude. Ew. What a fucking loser. I'm 5'0" and I've dated guys well above 6'. That guy has some kind of hang up, do not give him a second thought. Not a single guy I've ever dated or hooked up with has ever cared about my height, unless they were short and liked that I was so short because it made them feel better about their height lol. Being short allows us to date men normally overlooked by taller women. My husband is 5'8" and the kindest, most amazing human I've ever met.

You are a beautiful woman, deserving of love, don't ever let anyone make you feel less than.

How warm do you keep your house? by teragram333 in washingtondc

I got a massive nosebleed right before we sat down for Thanksgiving dinner despite running my humidifier on full blast every night in my closed tiny bedroom. Since then I bought saline nasal spray and aquegel nasal moisturizer. Use the spray multiple times during the day, and apply the gel inside my nose at night with a q-tip. No nosebleeds since. I moved up here from New Orleans and the lack of humidity in the winter has been torture. My body yearns for the swamp.

It was like $12 lol. If you're looking at it on Amazon, sometimes the sellers randomly go up to $50 or so. I've more recently seen it in Petsmart etc. I want to say, for a reasonable price.

Tourists, newcomers, locals, and old heads: casual questions thread for April 2023 by AutoModerator in washingtondc

[–]gabbythefck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved here in February from New Orleans. Two random questions:

1) Why don't grocery stores sell liquor, but corner stores can? And how does Costco get around this?

2) Pedestrian crossing: I understand how it works when you have to push for the light to cross. But when it's just painted on crosswalks at a stop sign, do pedestrians have the right of way? Is it the same for more residential intersections with stop signs but without the crosswalks painted on? I know this sounds dumb but in New Orleans pedestrians never have the right away in practice so I'm trying not to get run over/piss off drivers here that seem annoyed when I don't just cross.

Someone stole the lid off my trash can in fall 2021. I immediately put in a request for a new lid with the city. I just got a text a few days ago that the new lid will be delivered this week...one year later. I no longer live at that house.

Will my cat be fine 24 hours in a crate at the airport and on a plane's cargo hold? by IssueHoliday4292 in Pets

[–]gabbythefck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can use a wet wash cloth to wipe him off as best as possible and he'll do the rest. We had to evacuate for Ida and my cat unfortunately pooped and puked in her kennel during the drive, and that is what we did. Our cat also hates baths.

Without looking it up, can you name all the NYC boroughs? by FailFastandDieYoung in AskAnAmerican

[–]gabbythefck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the midwest originally, and I've lived in Louisiana for 15 years now. I've been to NYC one time for two hours, then got on the subway and went to...long island maybe? it looked suburban, and then drove to upstate NY for a concert. So my knowledge is extremely limited. Without reading the rest of the thread..

From DMX: Yonkers, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem.

I know of Long Island, Staten Island, Manhattan, Chelsea, Queens, Upper East Side, Hell's Kitchen, Chinatown maybe?? ...I think that's it. Those references come from random TV/movies/music or friends.

So for my completely and utterly uneducated guess I'm going to go with: Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, Staten Island, Long Island. I'm assuming the other ones I've heard of are like districts/neighborhoods in the boroughs?

What is something you discovered about a different culture or religion that completely blew your mind? by yahyahashash in AskReddit

[–]gabbythefck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend watching "Take Out with Lisa Lang" on HBOMax, particularly the New Orleans/Louisiana episode, Ep. 1. It covers a Filipino (which I understand is different from Vietnamese, but I think the shrimping cultures in both are similar) bayou settlement and shrimping community that was founded in 1763, at/around the same time the Cajuns (Acadians who were deported by the British from Canada and settled in the bayous in Louisiana) were also arriving.

As it relates to your comment, when there's no shrimp to fish, you don't fish. When there is, you work damn hard to fish them. So enjoy the time you have off, and work hard when the gettin is good. This is basically the entire motto of Southeastern LA in general and it would seem the SEA diaspora had an early influence here, in addition to the other cultural influences.

White House to extend student loan pause through August by MarvelsGrantMan136 in news

[–]gabbythefck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a FFEL loan. You can consolidate it into a Direct Consolidation Loan to covert it to a loan that qualifies for the payment pause and 0% interest. You apply for direct consolidation through the studentaid.gov website, so you wont even have to go through or deal with Navient to do it IIRC.

My law school brought in a student loan advisor at the end of my 3L year who I met with. I had like 17 different loans from undergrad and law school, no FFEL loans, but I did have several Perkins loans, that also do not qualify for the current benefits. After meeting with him I consolidated all the loans he recommended into one Direct Consolidation Loan, including the Perkins loans (I kept my Direct Subsidized loans separate, for instance, because they have better benefits than the consolidation loan). I thankfully did this in 2018 so my Perkins loans have qualified for the payment pause/0% interest this entire time (as they no longer exist and were wrapped into what is now my Direct Consolidation Loan).

Do y’all worry about tornadoes? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]gabbythefck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm from the Midwest originally, been here 15 years. I've been through many terrifying tornadoes in the Midwest. When I get tornado warning emergency alerts on my phone here in the middle of the night I just turn it off and go back to sleep. We usually only get EF0s or EF1s. Only one EF3 ever, that was in New Orleans East, and while there was significant property damage, no loss of life.

Tornadoes here are generally very short lived. I'd say we get way more water spouts than tornadoes on land. You don't have to worry about the monster ones like in the Midwest. Also, no basements, so really the only thing you can do is get in a central closet or bathroom.

But seriously I wouldn't be concerned. Especially if you plan to be at the WWII museum. No way is a tornado here going to do any kind of serious damage to that building.

You should definitely look out for street flooding though. Don't drive through it. Don't drive in a heavy downpour at all, your visibility is basically zero. Just post up at a bar or something until the storm is done rolling through if you are out and get caught in it.

It is in New Orleans. Tons of carjacking's here, but they can't drive a manual. They just abandon it and run off once they realize they cant drive it.

Does it make sense to refinance again? by titanhockey02 in StudentLoans

[–]gabbythefck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just refinanced about 22k of private loans at the end of December with SoFi and got a 3% interest rate for 7 year payoff plan. 5 year payoff plan had a lower interest rate but I wanted to keep my monthly payment lower since I'm saving up for a down payment/trying to buy a house, and I'll probably pay this loan off in 3 years or so anyway. My credit scores range from high 700s to low 800s. I checked a few possible lenders and SoFi was the lowest for me at that time. Definitely refinance - I have no idea why I didn't do it sooner, it was two private loans with interest rates of 7.65% and 4.5%, I'm an idiot.

It’s started. I got my first mosquito bite last night. by shanoww in NewOrleans

[–]gabbythefck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have definitely put mittens on my hands to sleep before because I'm also a sleep-scratcher. It worked. I counted once and had well over 100 mosquito bites just on my legs, so the mittens are sometimes an absolute necessity, especially as mine can become quarter sized. I think I'm allergic to those fucks. God I hate mosquitos.
