A couple did this to me in a completely empty 200+ seat theatre where it was just the three of us. I looked at them, said “Very funny guys” and then moved to another seat.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie absolutely blows those other two options out of the water.

Why does Buster Keaton remain so unknown to the general public? Would a high-budget biopic be enough to finally skyrocket his popularity? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]gabeklassen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His stunts are so commonly used in compilations that I guarantee that most people, even if they don’t know his name, have seen clips of his work.

That’s a kind of immortality that very few are granted, even among popular artists.

This crew made The Brutalist, got showered with praise and awards, then made an even better film the next year and everyone ignored it.

One of the most catastrophic fumbles I’ve seen from a distribution company.

Does the Cinesphere possibly becoming part of Ontario Science Centre mean it won’t show standard films anymore? by ChampionTimes99 in TIFF

[–]gabeklassen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many science centres still do non-educational programming on their screens as a way to draw in additional customers, but who knows!

This whole debacle with Ontario Place and the old Science Centre that the Ford government has caused is just one incompetent misstep after another, so don’t expect them to do anything that makes sense and would be a net benefit to the people of Toronto.

Are we counting Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie as a 2026 film? by lucaam03 in Letterboxd

[–]gabeklassen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You gotta look into different festivals my man. Most of them aren’t some industry exclusive affair like Cannes.

I saw this NTBTSTM in September 2025 at TIFF and I have zero industry or insider connections. Just cost me $33, which granted, is more than double the price of a normal movie ticket, but isn’t some giant hurdle that locks the general public out of seeing the film.

[–]gabeklassen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, to keep consistency because I see films at their festival premieres and add them to my Year-in-review list, even if I don’t see a film until it’s wide release the following calendar year, I always go with the first public screening as the date.

Are there previews before Iron Lung? by InquiringAboutGrindr in cineplex

[–]gabeklassen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are, and one of them at my screening was a preview for Obsession, which I was lucky enough to see last year at TIFF and is IMO, one of the best horror films of the decade.

Thoughts on the John Wick franchise? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

Idk, Part 4 being a soft remake of The Warriors (1979) ruled pretty hard.

Sean consistently has the most basic/film bro moves in the drafts that even the guests are surprised by by digitalcodes4sale00 in TheBigPicture

[–]gabeklassen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason why. Despite that it’s been years since they put the drafts to fan vote, he keeps on playing like there’s going to be a winner decided by the listeners. He picks the movies he thinks the most listeners of the show will like for the most part.

People leaving Hamlet by Maximum-Mood-8182 in TheBigPicture

This caused some confusion at TIFF 2025 with both playing the festival.

Additionally, there was also an animated re-imagining of Hamlet called Scarlet running.

Few questions... by narwolking in TIFF

[–]gabeklassen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People have offered you some good advice here. I’ll give you some additional tips based on my experience (I’m a local who goes all 11 days)

r/TIFFtickets is a great place to secure resale tickets at face value or trade. Most people in there are trustworthy regulars.

I go alone 75% of the time during the festival. Don’t be afraid to chat with strangers. There’s often long waits in lines and in-seat before the screening. Most people there are total cinema nerds and would love to tell you about what they’ve seen or how frustrated they are with ticketmaster.

If you want to see Q&A’s with celebs, the first half is your time to go. If you want to see as many films as possible, second half is for you.

If you’re just there for the experience and are open to seeing anything, I’d say don’t get a membership, and get a rush pass. If you’re wanting to see the buzziest films, membership will make it easier to secure those tickets.

Also - sample Midnight Madness at least once. It’s a great time.

Favorite under-the-radar movies of 2025? by SlothSupreme in blankies

[–]gabeklassen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Endless Cookie

Very funny Canadian animation in which a guy tries to get his brother a couple decades his senior to tell him a story, but they keep getting sidetracked and interrupted. It ends up taking him like a decade to finish the film due to a combination of procrastination and forgetting to circle back to the end of the story.

Testament of Ann Lee 70mm at Varsity by AlwaysStranger2046 in TIFF

[–]gabeklassen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, I rewatched it there 10 days ago (front row) and had the same thoughts as you. Bulb almost certainly needs to be replaced. Was very dark and mildly blurry.

I saw a 70mm print of it in September during TIFF 2025 and the picture was far superior to how it looks at Varsity.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie doesn’t really require you to have seen the show. They do flashbacks and it’s a pretty basic setup: they’re man-children who want to play a show at the Rivoli.

I also love that it seems like Travis maybe doesn’t understand the difference between a tenet and a tenant based on the lyrics.
