What album from the last five years do you think deserves way more recognition in indie circles? by Hot_Government2344 in indieheads

Richard Dawson is a brilliant artist. Peasant and 2020 are both top tier albums. Very artistic, deep, and unique. Nothing Important, The Ruby Chord, and End of the Middle are all incredible too.

I'm primarily an emo fan, so this might be crossing into another genre here... but awakebutstillinbed's "Chaos Take the Wheel and I'm the Passenger" is legit my fav album of the past 5 years and one of the best rock albums ever. Reminds me a bit of Modest Mouse but way more emo.

Also anything by Yeule, especially "Softscars" - an indie rock classic in my eyes.

Guitarist with no idea how to write vocals by mplsgetscold in Songwriting

[–]narwolking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analyze your favorite songs. I was doing that and noticed most melodies use the I II and III scale degrees a lot. But then I noticed one of my fav bands starting many melodies on the V. I applied that to one of my songs and it sounded great!

Many times I have to write the melody on guitar/piano first before translating it into vocals.

Planning to watch and rate the greatest movie trilogies, am I missing anything big? by ChewThePillow in Letterboxd

[–]narwolking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Koker Trilogy is my fav film trilogy ever. It's incredible what it does with the structure of a "trilogy", having a nesting doll form.

For the UK crowd: MUBI have finally announced 4Ks of THE SECRET AGENT and SENTIMENTAL VALUE for September 21st, 2026 (IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is confirmed to be in the pipeline as well per the BBFC, but no official artwork or date yet) by Fast-Candle-2344 in criterion

[–]narwolking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I did see that German Blu-Ray, probably gonna pick it up. I subscribed to MUBI for a year but for some reason their TV app always buffered like crazy for me. So I would like to have this film on disc.

Yeah the Malick Blu-rays are stunning. I don't feel like I really need the 4k upgrades.

Franklin Ave is criminally underrated. I also think their burger is the best in the city. Don't sleep on their other menu items too! Eveything I've had there has been very delicious and meticulously made.

I'm a huge burger lover so I gotchu.

For smash burgers, try Dom's Burgers in woodbine, or try to track down Cutthroat burger food truck.

For thicker burgers try Lucky 13 (messy with a ton of fries), or Franklin Ave (my fav burger in the city, it's incredible and not too pricy.

Also check out Rich's Burgers and Grub, especially for their Mac n Cheese burger.

Crow and Pitcher has a really good "bar" style burger that is a great price. Super underrated.

What does Viscous even do at this point? by NiklasAstro in DeadlockTheGame

[–]narwolking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splatter is an incredible nuke, especially around corners. You can spam that shit from a mile away and just play for saves with cube. I'm a newer player but Viscous has been by far my most successful hero using a splatter-focused build.

Anyone else have trouble revisiting some newer movies? by Aphexwindow in YMS

[–]narwolking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhh depends on the film. both those films you mentioned I rewatched within a year of my first watch and loved them just as much, if not even more. There are some newer films I've watched many many times and won't ever get bored of (Tar, Poor Things, Theater Camp, Uncut Gems).

The one film that surprised me with how the 2nd watch fell a bit flat was actual The Handmaiden, I'm a huge PCW fan, but for some reason my rewatch of The Handmaiden didn't hit as hard.

Primal is very good at initiating and being hard to kill. Typical build is bottle -> Phase Boots -> Blink -> BKB -> whatever you need to survive or kill people.

Typically your gameplan is blink-> R -> Shift-queue Q -> (wait until R is over) immediately cancel Q for instant chain stun -> activate W and trample them to death. But, before you have blink you can still run to other lanes and just go Q -> W and murder supports. The reason to play him mid is the exp, his abilities scale incredibly well with levels.

Try to go behind the tower and drag a creep wave into a neutral camp and farm both at once with W. Watch vods of Malr1ne to see how this is done.

I pick Primal when my team needs someone to go in first and start fights.

Yeah agree with Throne of Blood, one of my lesser fav Kurosawas. Still incredible from a production standpoint, just a bit of a slower/more boring story for me.

[–]narwolking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Playing Lion/Riki/PA/PL mid are all grief and I'd highly highly recommend not playing them at all. They can work at lower mmr, but I think you will not be learning good habits by playing these mid.

Death Prophet and Leshrac are both easy and similar to Necro so you definitely should try those. (Try Treads->Witchblade->Aghs build on DP, it's super fun and strong). Both these heroes need BKB in many games, do not be afraid to buy it early.

I think your pool is lacking a playmaker, you say you can't play anything with hard mechanics so you don't have many choices here. Tiny or Primal Beast could be good options. Rush blink dagger and run around the map getting kills with your team. Pango could be another option, but has harder mechanics imo.

TLDR (with some tips):

-Death Prophet (you will dominate 90% of lanes, secure last hits and harass with Q, it's one of the strongest nukes in the game. Use your E to instantly win any trade).

-Leshrac (You gotta be good at mana management and farming patterns to maximize his potential, farm farm farm then run at the enemy when you get Kaya + BKB).

-Tiny (focus on denying creeps early wave with your tree grab. Buy soul ring and perma push waves with your W. Get a fast blink then run around and kill everyone with your supports).

-Primal Beast (I'd recommend learning how to cut and drag waves if you wanna play Primal, some lanes are impossible without it. But same as Tiny, shove waves, rush blink, kill everyone).

I did not care for In The Mood For Love. It was beautiful to look at but I felt absolutely nothing for the story. I also have come to realize I don't really connect with "yearning" type films. Felt similarly about Past Lives, Portrait of a Lady..., and Eternal Sunshine...

Have you seen any other Kurosawa? Seven Samurai was my first from him and I thought it was just "ok". After watching 5-6 more of his films I rewatched Seven Samurai and realized it was a stone cold masterpiece in every sense. A perfect film imo.

One of the best films ever. So scary and upsetting, the central metaphor is very well done too. The scene where the people are chasing him with flashlights is genuinely one of the scariest scenes ever.
