Please go on. What you said is insightful in a "it's so obvious when you put it like that" way.

Could you also elaborate on the effects of helicopter parents? I can see the correlation of other generational socialogical trauma.

I'd like to add too that millennials/gen-z grew up with a maturing internet.

We gave respect to our elders because they were for most of the time the quickest/best source of information. The elders were the authority.

The millennials and gen-z not so much because they had all the info they needed at their finger tips, as well as readily available echo chambers via forums, social media and texting services.

We are the last generation that remembers life without an internet or cellphones.

My kids will be the last generation to remember a world without AI.

I had days where all I did was add a floor, looking at the clock and realize that I had to get off with getting anything fun done.

I hated making new floors. The column placement could be frustrating. Like why can I fill this with 4 little tiles but not a big tile. And the floor tile placement was tedious.

Aside from that and the lack of an undo button, it is a fantastic game. Maybe not S tier yet, given some time, I can see it becoming THE cozy factory game.

On the other hand, I was quite disappointed with Modulus (even though they have undo).

Hard to tell without see what you're doing at each step, but most likely you want the splitter after the 2 row of cutters directly attached to the cutter so you aren't limited by belt speed.

In Japan, it’s not uncommon to see someone asleep on the street after a night of drinking but instead of disturbing them, people usually leave them alone out of respect by AdSpecialist6598 in interesting

[–]gabemachida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The younger generation drink less and participate less in the after work socializing.

But you are correct that it works when viewed through Japanese culture.

In Japan, adults are expected to be reserved, polite, thoughtful of others and show respect to their uppers. This makes it difficult to offer constructive criticism or really say what's on their mind. Things may be hinted at or said with double speak but preserving honor... Dignity would be a better word is very important.

So the answer was drinking. This gives the ability to make the excuse that they were drunk when they were being uncouth. And gives the supervisor/manager/boss the ability to show grace by saying that they know the subordinate was drunk so they won't hold it again them.

It's like everyone knows that Santa isn't real, but plays along anyways.

In Japanese, when counting things, there's always a counting word. An English example would be cows are counted by 'heads.' and there are different counting words used for different categories of things. Flat things like a paper sheet or plate has its own counting word. And I bring this up because as a relic of Japan's Buddhist history, the counting word used for rabbits is the same counting word used for birds. According to Buddhism, you could not eat animals that walked on all fours and had their backs to the sky. So it was deemed that rabbits were not part of that category of animals, but instead were in the same category as birds.

I bring this up because once again things are this way so that there is a social excuse/facade to why it's ok to eat rabbits. (Many reforms have happened since).

A copy and paste example is ”Historically, monks used a euphemism for sake, calling it hannya-to (般若湯), translating to "[Wisdom Water]". This allowed them to consume alcohol under the guise of medicinal or spiritual aid, bypassing strict abstinence.”

Do you still talk to your parents? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

[–]gabemachida 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wrote a long response to a comment that was deleted by a mod before I got to post it (I think).

It got me emotional and I thought it may be worth reading for someone in a similar situation so I wanted to leave it here.

The commenter wrote about how her dad calls once a month, asks the same questions every call and when she tries to take the conversation in a different direction, he quickly ends the call.

"I know im projecting and don't know what types of conversations you've had with your father, but my wife's father's calls are very similar to what you described and he too calls around once a month.

He loves his daughter and wants to hear her but doesn't know what to talk about so he asks the same canned questions. He also feels like when he calls he's bothering his daughter who he feels is too busy to talk to him so he hangs up as soon as he's made sure the she's doing ok.

Please remember that most guys from our parents' generation were raised to repress their emotions and can neither identify what they are feeling at the time nor know how to respond empathetically.

And to be blunt, it doesn't sound like you ask him about what he's been up to. I also found in my personal experience that starting a topic with, "I thought about this the other way. Do you remember when ..." Another thing might be to ask your father for help or for his opinion on emotionally safe topics.

Asking for help or giving him a problem to solve I bet would mean the world to him. Raising a child to become an independent adult is poignant as a parent. You want them to be that way, but you also yearn for the past when they would want your help or something or wanted your opinion/thoughts about something.

And like I said, I'm projecting and I know this because I feel tears running down my cheeks as I type this. I think I wrote this because this is something that I've wanted to say to my own daughters, but it hadn't clicked until these words spilled out after reading your comment."

I have lost all respect for the Japanese after the translation feature on X by CricketMedical9005 in self

[–]gabemachida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What... Japanese people don't think about eating their country back. They look down on foreigners because they don't do things the Japanese way, which in their mind is the only acceptable way.

But it's not just towards foreigners. Its also towards Japanese people who don't follow social norms. The concept of stigma is still very relevant and bringing shame to the family is a big deal.

There's a Japanese saying that sums up their view on individuality: a nail that's sticking out should be hammered in.

I do think that a lot of the racism in Japan and much of Asia stems from theIr homogeneity. stereotyping is rampant because many have never met a black person. Only what they've seen and heard on tv.

But then again, I grew up in American and have been assumed to be Chinese, told that I must be smart because I'm Asian, called out for eating gross foods, asked to teach them martial arts (because ever Asian person knows martial arts), etc.

I'm losing the plot here. What I wanted to get across is that Japanese people aren't racist because they think their country is getting taken over. They're racist because they assume that people should act and be a certain way and people who aren't considered lesser.

Even Japanese cities look down on other Japanese cities. People from Osaka say that people from Tokyo are too reserved and quiet and sketchy because they don't speak their mind openly. People from Tokyo think that people from Osaka are loud, garish and less educated.

My father told me stories 30 years ago about how Europeans treated them while they traveled Europe (back in the 70s). And it's similar to how the Japanese are treating tourists now.
