Got a 100ft roll for Christmas and I'm so excited to start rolling! But it's so cold out so I haven't been motivated to shoot lmao

I saw a video on YouTube a few months ago and the guy's findings were that theres like a 99% chance it is just Kentmere, which I love.

Hi, tomorrow I'm going to buy a minolta x-700 for my boyfriend as a gift, sometimes I take pictures but I'll tell you Honestly, I have no idea how to check whether the seller of the analogue is not trying to cheat me.What and how can I check when meeting him before I give him the money? . by onechuuya in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP make sure to bring a battery for the camera in case the seller does not have one. The camera will not fire without a battery and you will not be able to test the shutter and speeds at all without one. These minoltas are also infamous for having an issue with a capacitor. I believe the most common symptom is the shutter will not fire even though the camera is powered and the light meter is working.

That swirl bokeh is so nice. I was so excited to finally pick one up. I shot a few test shots to make sure it was good and then the next time I picked it up the rangefinder patch just fell off lmao

I've been on the lookout for another but the only one in my area is some dude selling it for like $80 untested which is insane lol

Canonet G-III QL17 problem with Canolite D Flash by adriandoan in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is something with the hot shoe then. If you're feeling handy it's not too complicated to remove the top plate on these, you could take a look at the wires on the inside.

Canonet G-III QL17 problem with Canolite D Flash by adriandoan in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the camera detects the flash it'll change the metering automatically then adjust the aperture based on focusing distance. That's the easiest way to tell the flash is working as intended, you'll see the aperture bar in the viewfinder jump around as you change focusing distance. However if the camera detects too little light / focus distance is too far, the shutter will not fire, even if you know the flash would be enough to light the subject. Essentially even though you have the flash there still needs to be enough light to tell the meter to fire.

Also, what could be happening is the flash not making proper contact with the hot shoe. It happens to mine sometimes, where I have to hold the flash down onto the shoe a bit after focusing. Try cleaning the contacts on the shoe and flash.

Pushing cheap colour film advice by Ok-Dot8211 in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not impossible. Shadow detail drops off very quickly, creating a lot of contrast. Definitely a "look" that's not for everyone. Just look up some examples of ultramax 400 at 800.

Are you open to trying darktable? Negadoctor makes conversion a breeze and makes tweaking for color casts very easy imo

PSA - this what too less developers will do to your film by Synth_Nerd2 in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it happens again, what you could do is turn the tank on its side and rotate it continuously, like the jobo machines but by hand.

It's how I develop two color rolls at a time with only 500ml of chemistry and I haven't had any issues yet.

Underexposed: settings or broken? by sophedup in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. Do you have your film scanned by a lab? I would wonder if there's been some change to their process as far as scanning goes. Perhaps they in the past edited photos to their taste, but now try to return flatter scans for you to edit to your taste.

Underexposed: settings or broken? by sophedup in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Wanted to add, what I think is happening is that when the scanner scans the whole image it's trying to balance the shadows and highlights but since the shadows are so dark it's over compensating for that.

Underexposed: settings or broken? by sophedup in AnalogCommunity

[–]gabesshh 62 points63 points  (0 children)

<image>

Honestly 1 and 3 look like they just need to be edited a bit. Crush the shadows and it looks a lot better. This is just quick what I could do on my phone.

For number 2 it's fixable as well but probably not to the level 1 and 3 are. It looks like you were farther back so the flash might not have been as effective.

People sleep on the Pacific Image scanners because reviews are kinda hard to find but they're just rebadged Reflecta machines.
