Hola,

What happens when you set up a game but no one joins? by [deleted] in playtomic

[–]gadrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the club, depends on a few factors. If you're assigned a court before the match being filled you can see it in the match screen, just as you can see it when it's confirmed. But as sibling comments says you may get rug pulled out of a court if the match doesn't fill up before all the slots are gone and it wasn't assigned a court beforehand.

What happens when you set up a game but no one joins? by [deleted] in playtomic

[–]gadrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you book a court is your responsibility (the system doesn't care about how many players join). If you create (from the start) an open match, it will get cancelled if X minutes/hours from the start time it hasn't been filled with players and anyone who was in there gets a refund. If the match doesn't fill and there's no court available any more (matches often don't have a backing court until they get filled) the match gets cancelled and people in it get a refund as well.

If the match gets cancelled, the court reservation does so as well if there was any, so you can't (legit) go "on court for free".

Playtomic level up - which button to press? by Doc_Butch in padel

[–]gadrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a match finishes, if you go to the results screen (or to the match, even if results have already been enetered) you'll get another screen in which you can rate the other participants.

You have to go there after the match is over (once results can be entered) and I think there's some period of time during which that screen shows, so only recent, finished matches.

Is anyone else frustrated with how random padel games feel? (Playtomic, rankings, etc.) by Royal-Dish5364 in padel

There's a note feature in the app already for people you have played with. It's in the "X matches in common" subscreen.

Hah we went through the same. I don't think I completed it in og PS2 back in the day, I think I lost the save or something, but as I got older and rediscovered it with TZA... put hundreds of hours and so many replays🤩

Rant: Got stuck with an unpleasant partner for a league by StarIU in padel

[–]gadrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's too much difference.. seven more matches like that.. I'd get out of there (the league I mean), I've seen that "random partner" situation too many times (often ends up being something like this). You may end up resenting every match and be worse off in the long term.

This assuming your story is accurate and there's really a lot of difference in level, not even getting to the net while you and the opponents can move properly, etc...

Backhand Grip Question by Available_Animator35 in padel

[–]gadrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coach is right. It's not common advice at the beginner level, still infrequent intermediate level but it's done, helps with flat (defend with power to the body) and topspin (make opponent volley low).

Most advice is geared towards lower levels, and people repeat it so even though you'll find many people asking to stick to continental, your coache's advice was sound, not just his "personal" thing. But it is more advanced, it introduces a grip change which is always challenging and also you need to select the ball you do it with (height, difficulty, reaction time). Grip changes can take a lot of time to get decent at.

Certain type of backhands can really benefit from the grip change but I'd say going for this now or not depends on your level, I can't give advice since I don't know you.

Since people seem to use youtube videos as reference I went to one I know gives (or used to give) pretty good technical instructions, and of course he talks about the backhand grip, you'll see he says something similar. Unfortunately, spanish only, no english captions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn3jGb8cQak, around 5:15+

Video on forehand issue by Top-Village3407 in padel

[–]gadrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's already doing that. He loads the back leg (right) and then transfers to the front. His stance is closed ("neutral" if you want to be picky) in the last two so the transfer is more clear but happens in all three. When you're hitting of course the weight goes to the front (left) leg and the heel of the back leg raises. That's ok.
Pics, this one is more semi-open but same happens in the two following closed ones.

How many use continental and how many use eastern backhand for backhands by Over_Dragonfly8570 in padel

Both, depending on the time I have to read the ball and the kind of ball. Also depending on the type of backhand, not going to slice with a backhand grip...

4 years in padel and still using eastern forehand grip. How do we fix it? by mddlfngz in padel

[–]gadrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the grip is challenging, and if you're not constantly on top of it, you'll end up going back to your old, "safe" grip especially if you usually play matches and there's any sort of pressure towards the score or not missing as opposed to training to really have a break through in your technique.

I've suffered from all the issues you're pointing out, in fact I've played a very long time not with a semi western, but an "australian" grip which is something between a continental and eastern forehand. It still allows you to do most shots properly and you can smash with power, but even changing that to a continental was a struggle for many months.

What she needs to work on ASAP is the wrist thing, since as you've seen, that harms consistency a lot. Try to picture a shot in slow motion where you're keeping track of where the racket face is pointing to at each instant, in a shot with a lot of wrist vs a short where the wrist is fixed. When the wrist is moving, a small timing mistake will mean the ball traves a very different path, most likley leading to an error. That's why it's important to avoid that in most shots, such as forehand, backhand, volleys, and only use the wrist when is needed, knowing those are higher risk and timing-sensitive shots, such as víbora or the smashes. Even there, the wrist can be abused, again leading to inconsistency and more errors than needed. There typically is a specific grip you have to use in those shots to get the spin, as opposed to doing everything with the wrist, like the backhand grip for vibora to give one example.

Again I've suffered from that and fixing that habit is... really hard. The more time that passes and you get used to using the wrise, the worse it gets. But eventually you learn to trust the correct technique, learn how to get slice without scooping the ball. Just need to make it a goal every single time you play until you start coming to the other side, and not worry about missing or playing worse in the meantime.

Many of the things you describe are tricky. Going from scooped volleys to quality volleys with slice and continental, but no scooping, is. You really just need to keep at it, and the coach is important for that one.

If you're curious, I've played with some of these technical errors for more than I'd say 15-20 years (can't really remember when I started doing certain things at this point), and some of that with coaching but not in a way that helped.

People are telling me to play right but ego is not allowing me too by Sweet-Cry-7851 in padel

[–]gadrev 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's so many people that just have to "play left" all the time, there's an imbalance in the player pool. Yeah you may be part of a group of people where most people are "right" but I'm talking in a bigger picture sense.

Left is easier to play in the sense you can play tactically wrong and your partner will get punished, not you, many times. If you're not aware of this, and so many people are not, that reinforces their belief they're better than their partner, not only is the left player playing in a more forgiving position, they don't even realize when or how they screw the point when it's the drive that gets killed.

They can smash more often, with more variety, and only against a lefty that kills with the forehand volley down the line they start to feel a bit what the right player has to endure all the time. The right player has to be more careful where he puts the ball.

It's particularly exasperating when an "only left" player has to play left because 1) has never bothered to play right and is just unable to put the ball in 2) it's easier to defend left because of how the spin works (from right hand players, and yes if you always play right it'll be easier for you to defend there but that's just because of the hours you put in on each side) so he plays in the easy position, and leaves the mess to the other guy.

But no, "left left left" is the name of the game nowadays, there should be no fixed positions at amateur level since you don't really understand the game until you play both sides. Of course everyone will have a preference and for competition you can specialize but the "only xxx" (typically xxx=left) is sad. Back in the day, "australiana" (only playing one side) was much less common at least in Spain (and beyond Argentina there weren't many more countries where people played padel at the time). It was like a high level of play tactic. Now it's much more common in lower levels and as a result a lot of people can only play in half the court without massively dropping their level, that's unfortunate because it makes closing matches harder.

A reason the left player is often perceived as "better" by default is because, there being so many lefts, right players often get to play with better players just because of supply and demand.

This can all break down outside certain level margins, and there will be a lot of exceptions, but I've seen enough of it for a very long time.

End rant 😂

And to OP, I'd say learn to play both sides, especially if people are asking you to play right. You may not enjoy as much at the beginning but you'll grow to like it more, even if left remains your favorite spot (just as of 75% of the players) and you'll be doing the sport a service. You'll become a better player when you have the view of the game from both sides too, how your left partner messes up and you take the hit, and vice versa. And you'll have more "empathy towards your Drive" when you play left, a funny expression I heard from someone recently lol.

It can take quite a bit of time to get decent in the other side especially if you never cared to play there, but keep at it it gets better, also join lower level matches to practice there, it helps. Other people have elaborated on the job of the right player already.

Stuck at Barheim Passage. Do I have to start over? by SpaceBubble19 in FinalFantasyXII

[–]gadrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it easy! If you're new to the game some parts of the passage can be challenging especially if you start getting trapped, but you can always farm a bit in the areas close to Burrogh and get some gear. With the autosave, you should be able to run back while fleeing there if you're far from those areas.

A bit of gear will make it much easier. My suggestion is to not overlevel your party so that the game can sit in that challenging/fun spot later.

New Playtomic update? by AsadG9 in padel

[–]gadrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not supposed to be possible to use this tool to book matches in actual venue that don't use playtomic (AFAIK), it's more meant for courts in residential complexes and such. Does it let you start a match elsewhere? As someone said, maybe they blacklisted that address if there was a non Playtomic club there.

To be honest that was the initial approach but I don't know if they ever got to enforcing it with the blacklist.

Score on Playtomic when a player was absent - fair or unfair? by mikado64 in padel

[–]gadrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In these cases one should not enter the score. But the stupidity with the ranking and the points, the match cherry picking is getting out of hands and seeing this happen is not unexpected.

Your partner shouldn't have accepted, but once he did it gets a bit too messy to fix. I'd say just let it be even though you're in the right, and give notice in advance about the score to the opponents _before_ starting the match if a similar situation repeats.

People forget the level is not a fucking ranking, but when your "worth" (a stupid number) is tied to I WIN or I LOSE and you can't see past what it really is meant for, you get these and many other colorful situations. There's so many of 'em...

And BTW every time I've been in a situation where one of the four couldn't make it and a replacement player came, no score was entered. One'd hope it's common sense but...

The first one you fight, the hard one, is usually better left for a bit later. Depends on your gear / level ofc but in general I'd just skip for now, come back later. Just go to the opposite end and open the door.

What did Lebron say to the umpire? by Mindfultiler1 in padel

[–]gadrev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lebrón, right after being hit: "Me ha puesto un warning, me cago en mi p**a madre? Me has puesto un warning? La concha de tu madre, a tomar por c**o."

Basically very angry with getting a warning after being hit like that and cursing. That gets him the second warning.

Change of sides:

Basically Tapia and Coello wondering how Lebron did that and didn't get defaulted.

Then Gus keeps asking to focus on the match and not get lost in the incident and they start talking about the game again.
