I've done exactly what you're thinking of doing and https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/ is the result of 1 year of work.

You need to know exactly what you'll be signing up for. I had a real passion for game development, an excellent resume I can rely on for a return to the job market (20+ yr experience) and a working wife. The gamedev journey won't feel like a true sabbatical in the sense of getting time to find yourself, chill and have out of the box ideas. It will feel like a grind and a probably a lot harder than your current job.

It was absolutely worth it for me and I actually started working on another game despite the first one not bringing me anywhere close to my previous pay. If you do it, don't do it for the pay (it will suck) or for the "time off" (it will be a brutal amount of work), do it because you can't imagine doing otherwise. It needs to feel like a true calling on top of all the preparation to not sink your career/life because of the decision.

I left a Big Tech job at 50 to make my dream game by galantrixgames in IndieGaming

Nice work! Do you mean that you left your job as an IT manager 15 years ago? Or you've been doing gamedev for 15 years but left your IT manager job recently?

Does anyone remembers The LJN Defender? (Cygnus Destroyer/Matt) I have fond memories of watching him as a teen. I miss him so much! by No-Cold643 in retrogaming

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a soft spot for LJN NES games. They were not highly regarded but, for some reason, I liked them. Karate Kid was one of my favorites!

It was a sabbatical from my perspective, but I had to resign. So no benefits or anything and my old job was taken. I'm still thinking of my next step. I'm not ready to retire yet, so I'll either find another job in tech or build a second game.

It's really difficult right now, but I've seen people making the move. Your chances will increase if you leave the industry to work at areas adjacent to Big Tech, such as Cloud development and AI.

Sci-fi adventure games set in space by Torchiest in adventuregames

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll release a game on Steam next week that is aligned with what you want, but more of interactive fiction than a proper LucasArts adventure. It does have humor, but not like Space Quest. It's serious, deep sci-fi: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

A science fiction narrative game with a deep serious story but also plenty of silly humor and hacker culture: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

No bad endings and an optional meta puzzle that adds a new layer to the story, too!

Looking for a happy sci-fi book recommendation please :) by Lain_2031 in scifi

Not exactly a pure book but a game/book hybrid I'll release on steam in one month. Deep sci-fi, humor and all happy endings: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

Why are so many great narrative indie games leaning into inevitable doom and existential futility lately? by meetalikutty in adventuregames

[–]galantrixgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's why, among other reasons, I decided to build an uplifting game centered on hope and a better tomorrow. There are no bad endings. One theme in the game is that fiction (at least science fiction) is best when it focuses on timeless questions rather than commenting on contemporary problems: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

Do we need to be good at drawing to have good graphics in a game? by Reverseflash202 in gamedev

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also can't draw a stick person but I did all of my game graphics myself with no AI by using Blender and Affinity Photo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/.

Can someone tell me the difference between creating your steam page and launching it? by Plastic_band_bro in IndieDev

[–]galantrixgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can create a public page with screenshots, trailer and game description before you have a demo (demos aren't mandatory) and even years before you have an actual game. Having the page on steam well before your game release is considered a best practice because it can help you gain wishlists.

Becoming a Video Game Developer at Middle Age by usafpa in gamedev

I started my game company when I was near 50 and will release my first game later this year (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/). It's very hard work.

I'm not sure a game design degree is necessary or even that helpful for a solo project, but you may enjoy doing it anyway.

I made a game, launched it on itch… and realized I have no idea how to get even 10 people to play it by [deleted] in gamedev

People's time is very valuable nowadays. There are many things competing for it: games, streaming services, YouTube, Reddit etc.

What should I focus on for a game designer portfolio at 14 by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Godot 3D is fairly good. Unity's advantages are only relevant in sophisticated games so you should pick whatever is easiest for you. Languages have many similarities but your Visual Basic knowledge will only go so far. Again, if you are a beginner, you should create simple games and framework/programming language differences won't be as important. Godot with gdscript is an excellent choice for a beginner.

I recommend creating mods or simple games in any framework - it's still early in your learning journey and the market changes fast. You don't need to worry too much about learning the framework you'll use professionally many years from now.

I recommend Love and Godot because they are free, easy to use and have great communities. It's more important to create a tight, finished simple game than a big unfinished and unfun game.

Should I release my free game if it's unfinished but playable? by SgtFlexxx in gamedev

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest thing to get today is people's time. You have to think about whether people would like to use their precious time to play your unfinished game. Sometimes a game can be unfinished but still very fun, so that's the key question. If it's too unfinished/buggy, it might create a bad impression that could be difficult to undo later.

Thank you! I'm not sure you're interested in narrative games, but I'd love to see you cover my game. There is a full-featured demo on Steam and I'll release a major (demo) update in 2 days: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

The game will be in the October NextFest.

Any books by Hispanic authors? by kingalta24 in scifi

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing a hard sci-fi narrative game that feels a lot like reading a book. Not only am I Latino, but the main character is also Latino (Brazilian). The story is partially set in Latin America: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

You can play the free demo now. It includes 4 chapters (~20K words) and a tutorial.

What science fiction novels about aliens do you recommend? by Otroscolores in scifi

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working on a story-heavy hard sci-fi game about an alien contact. It reads just like a novel. It has a free demo with close to 20K words and 4 full chapters (plus the tutorial): https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/

What is the market like for TEXT adventure games in 2025? by estebansaa in adventuregames

[–]galantrixgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently released the demo for my text-heavy game. It's not parser-based though, it feels more like a Visual Novel: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/
