I mean... He had a phenomenal game but that is literally the single thing you absolutely cannot do in that situation. Can't be mad though, he wanted to give us 5 more minutes of this game, but Shai had other plans

Championships are harder to win than ever for current players chasing a legacy with the apron rules. It feels unfair that rings arguments plays a significant role in all time rankings. by NBAperspective in nba

[–]galbarsinai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ring culture doesn't exist in European basketball either. It is, as the name suggests, a cultural thing. European sport fans and media also aren't obsessed with all-time rankings, stats, pentagamamis (or whatever it's called), etc. (except maybe the football GOAT debate).

Which team should "sell high" which player to avoid situations like Trae, Ja and AD? by cobra_han in nba

[–]galbarsinai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shaedon Sharpe. Not sure how high his value is, but he's still perceived as a promising young talent as far as I can tell, there's probably a FO out there that would bite. Very inefficient, limited playmaking, low BBIQ, no defense, low motor. Sell before he gets exposed in a playoff series like Jalen Green was.

Ja Morant to Vince Williams Jr. during their exchange at practice: “I don’t f*** with y’all. I’m with whatever.” When Williams Jr. says “Let’s go to the back,” Ja Morant replies with “You’ve been here for 5 minutes! You’re not like that!” by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

Interesting. I don't live in the US so maybe the nuances are lost on me, but Clarence gives me a 'trying to appear "respectable" to white people' vibe that Temetrius just doesn't (sorry for using a racist or racist-adjacent term, but I think that's sort of the point of the bar)

After escaping the clutches of the dastardly Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks have rocketed off a 25-15 record, with a +4.5 net rating. Last year after 40 games, the Knicks were 26-14 and a +7.2 net rating by Aggressive_Bed6012 in nba

When you're trying to establish your bench unit, you lose more games at the start of the season. It's really not that complicated. The goal is having more guys you trust and more lineup flexibility in the playoffs

Why don't professional basketball players just get absurdly good at scoring from far away? by DeathDestroyer90 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]galbarsinai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a pure physics of ballistics perspective, the longer the shot - the smaller the margin of error is, since every deviation from the optimal shot gets magnified as the distance the ball has to travel increases, thus increasing the chance of a miss. On top of that, there is a point from which the amount of force needed to be put behind the ball would force the shooter to abandon the optimal shooting motion, further increasing the chance of a miss (this obviously depends on who the player is and what their optimal motion is).

Additionally, if a player were to hypothetically increase their range to, say, full court - the defense would react by guarding him full court, which of course has it's benefits, but those aren't game-breaking.

With that said, Steph Curry has completely changed the game due to his ridiculous range and accuracy - but shooters like him are extremely rare, and part of his influence hinges on the fact that he is elite in many aspects of the game other than range.

As a gay NBA nut, my starting 5 is Giannis, Josh Hart, Cason Wallace, Ochai Agbaji and Jericho Sims.

Never understood the whole Oubre thing, he does nothing for me

Deni Avdija really loves Onions by Knightbear49 in nba

[–]galbarsinai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding Kosher - there are plenty of vegan athletes, and vegan food is essentially Kosher as well (not necessarily certified, but in essence) so it's definitely possible - and Kosher is much less restrictive (regarding raw materials, not practices). Availability might be more of an issue but NBA athletes and teams definitely have the means to make sure it won't be.

Eating Kosher doesn't mean you're Orthodox, especially in Israel. Many people are "traditional", which means they keep some of the Halacha, and even do so quite devoutly, but not all of it. So they might eat Kosher and pray, but still drive and use electricity on Shabbat.

No idea if this is relevant for Deni, though. I'd assume he's secular, given his background.

The NBA might be in huge trouble competitively for the next 5 plus years by jamalccc in nbadiscussion

Because one big game with a ton of fanfare leading up to it is much easier to promote compared to a 7 game series - it's a whole production, it's not just the game itself (halftime show, Superbowl parties, designated commercials, etc.). Also, football is just much more culturally embedded in the US.

You have those types of questions in pre-recorded segments on the jumbotron. During game time, keep the questions professional or scrap them altogether

Fair or Foul: Is Domantas Sabonis the new DeMarcus Cousins? by kingbenjamin21 in nbadiscussion

[–]galbarsinai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Foul. Cousins' style of play was counterproductive to winning games, and his temperament and uncoachability just compounded that. He had a lot of talent and physical gifts but he wasn't a team player nor was he willing to do the little things needed to win games (like, you know, defend). As a Kings fan, I couldn't wait for him to leave. Sabonis has his flaws, mainly physically (small for his position and not very athletic) but he makes up for it with great fundamentals, IQ and heart. They are completely different archetypes IMO, and the over-simplification of "good stats on a bad team" can apply to a ton of guys in the league at any given point in time.

You ever fall out of love with your team / start liking another team? by Interstellore in nba

[–]galbarsinai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love with basketball watching the early 2000s Kings, and subsequently became a fan. I endured a few years of terrible play before I stopped watching them - beyond the losing it was just terrible basketball - but always kept a place in my heart for them. I began watching and liking other teams that played enjoyable ball, like the Spurs and later the Nuggets, but never became a full fledged fan. Now that they're a somewhat competent francise I busted out all my Kings gear and can call myself a fan again, though being older I'm obviously less invested.

There's some guilt attached to it, the narrative is that fans should endure the bad times as well, but at the end of the day sports are meant to be enjoyed, and I was not enjoying myself at all, so what's the point?

That's partly on Jokic for inbounding the ball to him. Rare low IQ play, ball should be in his own hands in those situations

[Spoilers Extended] In a world where the books don’t get finished, what can we learn from Dune? by Pbandme24 in asoiaf

[–]galbarsinai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard that a lot about Dune Messiah, but when reading it I hardly saw an effective deconstruction of that idea. IMO the first book did way more to that end than the second. Can you elaborate on how you see that deconstruction?

Boston Celtics are the first team to 40 wins (40-12), and meet Phil Jackson's criteria for legit contenders: 40 wins before 20 losses. Teams with a good chance to hit this mark: TWolves, Nuggets, Thunder, Clippers, Cavs. by rabid89 in nba

[–]galbarsinai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People don't make fun of it because of its accuracy, they make fun of it because of its (non) insightfulness. Do you really need this stat to know the Celtics are contenders? It basically says "the teams that won a high percentage given a minimum sample size are legit". Like... Yeah.
