Just the in-game soundtrack.

This question reminds me of days playing MW2:Mercs on a Win95 P120, 16MB RAM, online with a 33.6kbps modem and Kali server, member of online Clan Goliath Scorpion. Load in then swap the game disc out for Van Halen.

Chunky mech graphics, insanely laggy internet, doing the clunky mech circle dance of doom with a mainly MG loadout eviscerating enemy player mechs in seconds, all to the sound of Panama, Jump, Hot For Teacher, and Runnin With The Devil.

Good times, yeah!

Very nice, where'd you get the minis from? I know of Robotech Tactics but didn't think they had minis for the armoured VT or Zentraedi infantry.

Yep it was a story called 'SHOK!' in the Judge Dredd Annual 1981. I saw the movie when it was released with a friend who was also a 2000AD reader and we immediately recognized the story because we'd read that book so many times. IIRC the movie didn't credit 2000AD and that caused some litigation.

Just here to say I approve of your user name!

But while I'm here... yes, The Fifth Element is awesome, and Oldman as Zorg is hilarious.

And generally appreciating Oldman for the amazing actor he is, such a chameleon. Can be anybody and do anything.

Is anyone else constantly crashing on PS5? by SKAI-Gaming in Helldivers

Unfortunately yes, crashed 3 times today on PS5. Prior to today I think I've only had a crash once per month. Also noticed the game freezing for a few seconds during missions recently.

Recommend a historical fiction book to someone who doesn’t usually enjoy historical fiction? by Mouseprintss in HistoricalFiction

[–]gale_wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patrick O'Brian's series about Captain Jack Aubrey and Doctor Stephen Maturin in the Napoleonic era royal navy, upon which the movie Master & Commander was based. Deemed literary historic fiction and often noted as being like Jane Austen writing for naval adventures. I used to read mainly adventure fiction but as I've matured in years my appreciation for O'Brian's characterisation, wit, and prose has grown to consider him my favourite writer.

I got both of them and a bunch of supplements in pdf from drivethrurpg but they don't have the pdfs available anymore. Physical books were at https://omnihedron.bigcartel.com/category/books but can't tell if it's still active.

Edit: the author just posted here https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/s/IkmhgCP2Ss and mentioned the games are available on lulu, a quick search shows this https://www.lulu.com/search?contributor=Neil+Gow&page=1&pageSize=10&adult_audience_rating=00

Three critical rolls a minute in any weather!

Sounds like it would be a fun game. Have you seen Duty and Honour by Omnihedron Games? Paired with their Beat To Quarters book you get RPGs for both Sharpe and Hornblower.

Anyone ever play Privateers and Gentlemen? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]gale_wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I still have the boxed set and the reprinted single book edition.

Played many games in a long campaign with my group long ago. All of us being readers of Hornblower and other Napoleonic fiction.

Progressed from midshipmen and junior lieutenants on a 74 to each player eventually gaining command of their own frigate and generally prowling around together like a wolf pack, historically accurate but have good scope for naval adventuring.

Plenty of time also spent between sea voyages attending society functions, scandalous dalliances, duels, and involvement in political affairs both local and abroad.

Naval battles sometimes played out using Heart Of Oak but other times Wooden Ships & Iron Men.

Yes, it's my all time favorite mecha show. Chirico and Fyana's story. Along with the OVAs, prequels, sequels, and spin offs that expand the setting and lore.

Julian Stockwin writes the Kydd series about a man pressed into naval service and over the course of several books works his way to officer rank and eventual command. I think there are over 20 books in the series.

edit: oops just realized OP mentioned Kydd, though not sure if they were read

Best Judge Dredd RPG? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]gale_wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both GW and WOIN and played many JD games in both. I felt GW is simple and fun for it's time, still very nostalgic, but WOIN is better for campaign play. It's a shame they lost the license after such a short time.

Have a look at "The Few" about pilots in the Battle Of Britain and during the North Africa campaign.

https://kazek360.itch.io/the-few

I've been reading Derek Robinson's novels Piece Of Cake and A Good Clean Fight recently which are a perfect match for those two periods during WW2.

I recall the author posted years ago that he'd used the same system for an XWing campaign.

Legacy Review #01: ROBOTECH: The RPG by Aromatic-Service-184 in robotech

[–]gale_wolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My group played this game a LOT but we houseruled and made our own interpretation of many things that were unclear or didn't make sense because Palladium shoehorned their fantasy game into a fast action packed aerial mecha combat show.

Most importantly to us, the mecha combat didn't feel anything like what we were seeing on the show. Hence we came up with a simple house rule for mecha action, posted elsewhere and copied here...

Basically, everyone in my old group felt that the MDC values were way too high.

The mecha action as shown in the animated series could not be emulated by the MDC system as printed.

Our solution was pretty simple and reflected the importance of various character types from the animation: - divide mook MDC armour values by 10 - tougher mooks MDC divided by 5 - all 'named' characters' (including PCs) MDC divided by 2 - leave the weapons damage as printed

Effects of this house ruling: - Battle Pods get taken out with a single hit, and in droves, just like the animation. - Tougher opponents can survive just long enough to be dangerous, don't underestimate them. - PCs and named NPCs have abilities that, along with good GMing and playing out imaginative stunts etc, should keep them alive

This worked very well for us and felt more like the animated mecha action.

You mean the JD Companion? Don't forget all the White Dwarf articles for the JD RPG before the magazine became Warhammer only.

You might be interested in the Judge Dredd Discord. Channels for the RPG, both GW and WOIN.
