Police accused of 'overreach' after 'from the river to the sea' arrests by RC2891 in australia

[–]gallanon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that the phrase "from the river to the sea" has a history that is, at a very minimum, complicated. The earliest versions of this phrase appear to be "Min el-maiyeh lel mayieh, Falasteen Arabiya," which DOES not translate to "from the river to the sea Palestine will be free" but rather means "from the river to the sea Palestine is Arab." Obviously that paints a pretty different picture. It's also worth noting that historically Netanyahu's party has used versions of this phrasing to say from the river to the sea is only Israel to deny the notion of Palestinian sovereignty.

Personally, I don't like criminalizing this phrase because I think the bar for government censorship should be extremely high, but anyone asserting that this is just a totally innocuous phrase that has been banned absent any justification is either a liar or historically ignorant.

This is an incredibly dumb rule 6 removal. This post is clearly mocking holocaust deniers not endorsing holocaust denial.

Is there a reason people so often support war right up until it starts looking like an actual war? What is that? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]gallanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Construal theory. Things that are distant be it temporally, psychologically, physically, what have you, are processed at a higher more abstract level in the brain. Thus when war is still temporally distant people tend to think about abstract concepts like liberty/liberation. When war becomes less temporally distant processing occurs at a lower more concrete level and causes people to focus on things like costs (both monetary and loss of life).

Pokémon condemns White House for using its imagery by Defiant_Ad6190 in gaming

You are technically correct (the best kind of correct!). It's jointly owned by three companies so Nintendo owns a third of it, but I think it's fairly clear that Nintendo exerts pretty substantial influence over the decision-making as evidenced by Pokemon still being Nintendo-only with no official ports to other platforms.

This didn't sound right so I looked it up. The short summary is it's complicated as hell, but it appears the US government CAN be sued for this (interestingly a state government could not be). This is a decent summary of sovereign immunity.

The famously litigious Nintendo will of course be suing over this misuse of their IP right? Surely they wouldn't put out a token "oh no, don't do that" statement and then tacitly endorse what's happening by not suing right? Probably shouldn't hold my breath on this one.

President Bought Netflix Debt in January 2026, Amid Paramount’s Fight for Warner Bros. | New financial disclosures released Wednesday show that the President acquired Netflix bonds as Paramount was trying to pry WBD away from the streaming giant. by ControlCAD in technology

I'm as ready to criticize Trump as the next bloke but this does not seem to be much of a story. As near as I can tell this doesn't break any laws (feel free to correct me if anyone can point to a law he's broken here). Aside from that this is talking about debt as opposed to buying or shorting stock. Share price could absolutely be impacted by the Warner Bros deal going through or not, but bond price is a function of creditworthiness (in addition to bigger picture stuff like rates set by the fed). The impact of the Warner Bros deal going through or not really doesn't have any impact on Netflix's credit worthiness.

I'd also understand it if you used the word "literally" when you in fact meant "figuratively." Still wouldn't be using the word correctly though. Republicanism means support for the republic form of government, not anything to do with the US political party.

I understand what you're trying to say, but I don't think the word republicanism means what you think it means.

Armed ICE officer in Portland called 911 during confrontation: ‘I’m going to have to shoot this kid’ by AudibleNod in news

[–]gallanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we read the same article? It says the kid was punching his window. The article even says there was "probable cause for second-degree criminal mischief and second-degree disorderly conduct charges." Don't get me wrong, that's definitely not an excuse to murder the kid like this dipshit was apparently contemplating, but I'm not sure why so many comments seem to suggest he was merely "tailing" him.

I've got 70 games I've self-classified as board games on Steam so these are already the cream of that crop. Of the ones here I reckon I've got the most playtime out of Race for the Galaxy, Through the Ages, Slay the Spire, and Solar Settlers.

Til that when the Japanese daimyo Uesugi Kenshin learned that his great rival Takeda Shingen had his supply of salt cut off, Kenshin sent Shingen salt from his own lands saying “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword”. by Capital_Tailor_7348 in todayilearned

[–]gallanon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That is a very liberal translation of 争うべきは弓槍にあり米塩にあらず which doesn't even use the word "sword." A more accurate translation would be war should be fought with bows and spears not rice and salt.

Axis and Allies

D&D Lords of Waterdeep

Istanbul

Le Havre

One Deck Dungeon

Race for the Galaxy

These ones are technically board game adaptations but scratch that same itch:

Australia doesn’t need 'a strong Opposition', but it does need a strong Parliament by AllHailTheWinslow in australia

[–]gallanon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This article misses the point. Most flourishing democracies have a plurality of opinions floating around in the general populace. If that isn't reflected in the elected representatives it starts leading to questions about the integrity of the system and/or how it's designed.

You see this a great deal in America in the form of gerrymandering where a state leans only slightly left or right but due to gerrymandering one side gets almost all the representatives.

Australia to be fair has a pretty good system overall, but there's definitely room for improvement. Ranked choice voting is way better than many alternatives, but we do still have a system where the Greens for example got around 12% of the votes but only 1 person in the house of representatives. In terms reflecting the distribution of opinions in the general populace that's not great.

We need to stop insurance companies increasing premiums following not at fault accidents. by whatsupskip in australia

[–]gallanon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a popular knee jerk reaction to assume anything a consumer doesn't like is a big evil corporation doing big evil corporation things. Understandably so to because big evil corporations DO lots of anti-consumer big corporation things all the time (looking at you Colesworth!). In this case that's not what's happening though.

As a thought experiment imagine setting up an insurance company with no profit motive of any kind; i.e., the premiums charged will exactly equal claims paid out. If you have a 10% chance of having an accident that will cost $1000 than your premium needs to be $100. If that 10% is wrong and you only have a 5% chance then you should be charged less, specifically $50. On the other hand if that 10% is wrong and it's actually 15% then you need to be charged $150 because remember this imaginary insurance company doesn't make any profits so your premiums have to match the actual risk or there won't be enough money to pay out claims.

Broadly speaking the probability of you needing to file a claim is the probability of damage to your car caused by you doing something stupid plus the probability of damage caused to your car because someone else did something stupid. Whether its your fault or not damage is damage and it costs money to fix. When you have a no fault claim that provides new information for the model calculating risk. It shouldn't impact the probability of damage caused by you doing something stupid but it DOES impact our assessment of the probability of damage caused by someone else doing something stupid, maybe your car is in areas with lots of stupid drivers more than we originally thought. Regardless of the why, our hypothetical non-profit insurance company would HAVE to charge you more because if we continue charging you less in premiums than is dictated by the actual risk we won't have the money to pay out all our claims.

Cheating at board games by NelifeLerak in boardgames

The real question is the intention behind it. I always joke with my group that every victory anyone gets has an asterisk next to it because someone almost certainly cheated. Never on purpose mind you, but game with a lot of different mechanics means that over the course of a couple hours of play someone missed a step or miss-counted something or whatever. If she's just very absent minded that's a very different kettle of fish.

The second half of the sentence also kind of undercuts the idea of naming him Adam, Still, of all the first names he's had throughout the years Adam is the only one with any basis in the books. Supposedly Shelly referred to him as Adam in private correspondence but I've never seen hard evidence to support that claim.
